The Phantom Stranger #11 is My Pick of the Week!

Nothing (including vacation) could keep me from declaring Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #11 as my Pick of the Week! As with a few previous picks, there is something I need to discuss in greater detail, but I will save that article until tomorrow as to not spoil it for anyone. There are many points, though, that I can hint to without giving the story away.

Who is in the Story?

As you can see on the cover of The Phantom Stranger #11, the main players in this story include the Phantom Stranger, Batman, Katana, and Deadman. Don’t worry, the focus of the issue is shared between all four characters.

The Basis of The Phantom Stranger #11

The foursome travels into Heaven in order to find clues as to what is happening to Superman. It is interesting to see the New 52 version of Heavern (well, versions).

What Makes The Phantom Stranger #11 My Pick of the Week?

This single issue makes one of the most interesting single issue shots I have read this year. It explores some new aspects of secondary characters such as Katana and Deadman. At the same time, it gives a glimpse into Batman’s psyche which is sure to be discussed and referenced for many years. The issue also shows why the Phantom Stranger is more important of a character than many give him credit for. If you are a Batman fan, you should pick up this issue for the interesting glimpse into the character’s soul.

Tomorrow

There is a question which is posed in The Phantom Stranger #11 which needs to be explored on multiple levels. Since I am writing this on New Comic Day, I will save my exploration until tomorrow. It is important enough to be added onto tomorrow’s plate. Just don’t tell my wife I am hiding away writing while on vacation.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 is My Pick of the Week!

It was a hard decision to make this week, but I have to make my Pick of the Week Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1. It was a hard decision because there are some really good issues this week. If you are planning on following the Trinity War, though, this is an essential issue as it preludes the Trinity War – which preludes Villain Month and Forever Evil. As usual, I am going to do everything I can to stay away from giving you spoilers.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1

History

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 does a strong job of explaining the character’s backstory and explain her importance in the “history” of the DC Universe. I really like the way we see the progression of the character through the years in each panel. You will understand this statement more when you read the issue.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 and Mythology

The backstory of Pandora, as presented in Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 in the issue comes pretty close to matching the mythological story of the character. She is the one who made the mistake which unleashed the Seven Deadly Sin on humanity. Since she released the sins, and thus destroyed humanity, only she can make the world right again.

The Precursor to Trinity War, Villain Month, and Forever Evil

Since Pandora could be considered as the root of all evil, it would be her fault that villains roam the Earth. Her struggle will lead to the Trinity War, Villain Month, and Forever Evil. In future years, Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 may be looked upon as a key issue which “started it all.” Of course, only time will tell that for sure.

One Issue with the Issue

On the fifth story page, we see a frame on the bottom right showing Pandora kneeling down and screaming as she realizes what she has done. Her right foot is exposed in the frame. The problem is, her foot is backwards. If you are kneeling, your big toe is on the inside close to your body. Her toes, and the arch of her foot are inversed. Now I understand that mistakes are made and make it past editing. In fact, I know that even if I read an article five times, it might still make it out with an error. It just surprised me that this mistake made it past so many people (penciler, inker, colorist, and editorial staff). Either way, pick up the issue today.

Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 is My Pick of the Week!

Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 is my Pick of the Week! I know…I know…some of you are going to wonder about me picking the comic of one of my favorite characters as my pick of the week. In all honesty, this was one of the best issues for the character in his 61 year history.

The Meat of the Story

As you well know, I am not interested in giving spoilers. The meat of Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 story is about what we (specifically the Phantom Stranger) will do for those we love. What type of Hell would we put ourselves through? What types of sacrifices would we make? While many storylines have touched up on these age-old questions, Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 takes these questions in more of a literal sense than we are used to reading.

The Cameos

There are many cameos in Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9. Get ready for an issue where you will see Etrigan, Sin-Eater, Justice League Dark, Doctor Thirteen, The Question, The Spectre, and some of the forgotten enemies from past iterations of the Phantom Stranger.

Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 Needs This Honor

While my Pick of the Week is a small honor, the issue in question deserves it. Even if you are not a fan of the Phantom Stranger, you will understand the pain he is enduring and the storyline he was put in this month. I am sure that many of the statements made within will be reflected in the upcoming months during the  Trinity War and/or Forever Evil. We will have to wait and see.

Trinity War Triptych – True Meaning

The Trinity War triptych has everyone talking, but I am realizing that most comic book websites are missing key points in the picture. Too many people are reading into the action in the Trinity War triptych and not reading into the messages hidden inside.

What is Being Reported on the Trinity War Triptych?

Yes, it is interesting how Wonder Woman has her lasso around Constantine. Yes, it is interesting how the three factions of the Justice League (proper, Dark, and America) are fighting. These points, though, do not the key points of the collaborative picture at all. Am I the only one who sees the actual message?

Who Fights the Trinity War?

The original thoughts about the Trinity War pointed to a war between Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Since the three factions of the Justice League are seen fighting in the triptych, many websites are discussing the “trinity” in the war being the Justice League factions. Why are they disregarding the idea of the Phantom Stranger, The Question, and Pandora being listed as the Trinity of Sin? Anyways, the picture clearly points to the three main players in the war.

Read the Picture

The Phantom Stranger and The Question are shown in clowdy form above the fighting. I read this as them not simply being watching the battle, but directing it as if the members of the Justice League factions are simply pawns in a greater battle. Where are they directing the battle?

If you were to draw a line from the Phantom Stranger’s eyes and from The Question’s eyes, you will note that they are both looking directly at the skull in Pandora’s clutches. If you were to draw a line from the Phantom Stranger to The Question, you will note that the shape created is an equilateral triangle. The equilateral triangle is a major symbol in Christianity since it symbolizes the equality of the Holy Trinity. Turn that and we have a triangle symbolizing the Trinity of Sin.

Reading Deeper

What is Pandora doing in the picture? As the world is fighting around her, she is protecting what appears to be a jeweled skull. It should be inferred that the Trinity War is centered on this skull. With Pandora’s own title coming out shortly, we should find out what the skull means within weeks.

I guess the amount of action in the picture has distracted most people from the true message of the Trinity War triptych. At least we appear to have an answer to the question about the Trinity War affecting more titles than just those in the DC Comics Dark Universe. The Trinity War will be fought the the Trinity of Sin with the factions of the Justice League being their pawns.
