Thoughts on Constantine TV Series

NBC and DC Comics are teaming up to work on a Constantine TV series. This comes during a string of announcements about upcoming TV series based on DC Comics properties. Yesterday, I told you about my mixed feelings about Gotham, so what do I think about a Constantine TV series?

Constantine

Simply put, Constantine is one of my favorite New 52 characters. I love the character in Justice League Dark, and in his own series. I have even found myself picking up issues of the Swamp Thing whenever John Constantine crosses over into that title.

Justice League Dark Movie

I am disturbed by the potential that a Constantine TV series could kill the idea of a Justice League Dark movie. At the same time, though, it could improve the chances of the movie being made if the character becomes popular enough on TV.

Crossovers and Appearances on Constantine TV Series

Could we see the Swamp Thing on a Constantine TV series? How about Deadman? How about the Phantom Stranger or The Question? Heck, we might even get the formation of the Justice League Dark on TV.

Could Constantine TV Series Work?

With the dark tales being told on TV these days (Grimm, Once Upon a Time, The Walking Dead, American Horror Story), there is a huge market for a horrifying comic book character. Mix in the fact that comic book-based TV shows are so hot right now, and a Constantine TV series looks like a given.

Why NBC?

Nobody watches The CW. DC Comics and Warner Bros. are going to want to make money on a show.

Will I Watch?

As long as the Constantine TV series follows the best version of Constantine (the British one), I will find myself looking forward to the show. The Flash and Constantine are two proposed DC Comics shows which I will have to make time for each week.

Justice League Dark #22 is My Pick of the Week!

Justice League Dark #22 is easily my Pick of the Week as it makes me more interested in the Trinity War, and more interested in the characters in the other Justice League teams. There were many other strong offerings I have read for this week, but Justice League Dark #22 works as a great introduction to the team, and is an integral part of the Trinity War story.

Live by the Sword…

If you are a regular reader of this site, you know I do not like to give spoilers. The problem is that there is very little to talk about when it comes to Justice League Dark #22 without giving a spoiler. I can say that it is the first time all three of the Justice League teams are in the same place at the same time. There are a few members who are not part of this “meeting,” but you will learn why in the pages of the issue.

A Goal of the Trinity War

Of course, the Trinity War leads into Villain Month, Forever Evil, and the big DC Comics attacks during the September War, but there is a different goal to the crossover as well. The crew at DC Comics wants to introduce as many people as possible to the Dark Universe. That is way we have Pandora, the Phantom Stranger, The Question, and Justice League Dark playing such important roles in this story. Sure, the sales are padded right now during the Trinity War crossover, but the publisher hopes you will not just pick up Justice League Dark #22, but other issues as well. They want you to become interested in the Phantom Stranger, and Pandora. Of course, we will not know if this part of their plan worked for a few months.

An Interesting Panel in Justice League Dark #22

There is an interesting panel in Justice League Dark #22 that I am going to pick apart tomorrow. There was one particular instance which happened which has me scratching my head and reading into particular implications and statements. Since I don’t like to give spoilers, you will have to wait until tomorrow. Sorry.

Justice League Dark Movie Helps DC, Hurts Marvel

According to the reports out of WonderCon, Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark movie is more developed than anyone had imagined. The movie, and more importantly the use of the DC Comics Dark Universe, opens up doors for more possibilities in the future which should get most DC Comics fans excited. It should also make Marvel at least a little nervous.

I can't wait for the Justice League Dark movie.

Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark Movie

While answering questions at WonderCon, del Toro discussed the characters which are involved at this point. We will have a blonde Constantine, the Jason Blood Etrigan, Swamp Thing, and Deadman. Many reports are also stated The Spectre and Zatanna will also play roles in the film. Guillermo del Toro also stated that a director would soon be announced and explained how there was already a bible written for the basic rules and flow of the Dark Universe. I guess fans of some of the other characters in Justice League Dark are going to be a little disappointed.

The Future of the Dark Universe

Let’s say Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark movie gets off the ground. This could equal spin-off movies for characters such as Constantine, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and Etrigan. It could also mean an expansion of the Dark Universe in the future where we could see characters such as the Trinity of Sin (Phantom Stranger, Pandora, and The Question) have big screen debuts as well. The upcoming Trinity War could become a screenplay somewhere down the road. Could we see the chance of the House of Mystery movie at some point?

Why Marvel Fears the Justice League Dark Movie

If things can get rolling quickly on the Justice League Dark movie, Marvel could easily appear as if it is trying to catch up with their main rival. Word came out recently about Marvel moving forward with a Doctor Strange movie. If Justice League Dark gets up and running before then, Marvel will look like it is trying to bring out a mystical movie to compete with DC’s Dark Universe. While stalwart comic book fans might know this is incorrect, the general public will probably not and become discouraged about a “competitive mystical superhero movie.” The Dark Universe moves could even kill the plans for a Doctor Strange movie.

The Future for Other DC Movies After Justice League Dark Movie

Anyone who has been waiting for the Justice League movie knows DC has needed a kick in the pants to get the ball rolling on their BIG movie program. If Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark movie can deliver, it might make the heads of DC ask “What the hell have we been waiting for?” Maybe the expansion of the Dark Universe can get things moving in the normal DC Universe.
