Potential Issues with a Black Panther Movie

Rumors have circulated about a Black Panther movie for years. In fact, I remember sitting in sophomore literature class in 1990 and hearing friends talk about how a magazine had hinted Marvel looking at options for a Black Panther movie. Here we are 23 years later still talking about the opportunity the House of Ideas has with the character. There are, though, distinct disadvantages to creating the movie.

Wakanda

Being that T’Challa comes from a mythological land on “our” planet, people might have an issue relating. People can understand how they might not be able to relate to Asgard or Krypton because they are off in “yonder” and not of our world. People would have a more difficult time relating to a land which has religion and traditions which we would relate to a third world country but the technology or a country advanced ahead of the United States. This relation gap would have to be dealt with in a Black Panther movie.

Dryness

One of the issues with a potential Black Panther movie is the same type of issue Marvel will face with a potential Doctor Strange movie. Both characters are dry when compared with the witty superheroes we are used to in the movies. If Marvel makes T’Challa as witty as say, Iron Man, old fans will become upset with the commercialization of the character. If Marvel does not make the character witty enough, fans who do not know the character from comics will be disappointed.

Hate to Say It

I hate to say it, but one of the issues with a Black Panther movie will be that people who are alien to comics will believe the character has a movie because he is Black. The trendy people who go to the latest superhero movie and have never stepped into a comic book store will discount the history (which they don’t know) of the character and gain a preconception that the Black Panther has a movie because of the color of his skin and not the content of his character. This would be the greatest disconnect fans could have with a Black Panther movie, but you know it will happen.

Personally, I hope to see a Black Panther movie in the future. He is one of the most underrated superheroes in the Marvel roster and he needs to be more at the front than he is. Hopefully, Marvel can overcome these obstacles and give us the movie we deserve.

Patrick Dempsey Should Play Doctor Strange

While I am sure many fans would not agree with me, I believe Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy would be the perfect actor to play Doctor Strange in the planned movie. Marvel Comics has called for a script, and I would be surprised if the project was not given an official date soon. McDreamy is one of the few actors who could give Doctor Strange the portrayal he deserves.

My Justification

Doctor Strange has been one of my favorite characters since I was a child. One of the first comics I ever read was an issue of The Defenders and I instantly gained respect for the Sorcerer Supreme. Over the years, I have read every appearance of his in Strange Tales, every issue of The Defenders, and all of the issues in Doctor Strange’s own titles. I am not someone who just has a passing fancy with the characters – he is one of my favorites and his portrayal on film is important to me.

In All Seriousness

One of the most important aspects of Doctor Strange’s personality is how he stays serious no matter what the situation. Even his humor is serious. Dempsey’s character on “Grey’s Anatomy” is reflective of the Master of the Mystic Arts without the Sanctum Santorum. McDreamy’s character is usually serious and he can focus on whatever issue is at hand. The dry wit of the character is very close to what would be found in the pages of the comics.

The Hand

What is interesting is the Grey’s Anatomy character is currently dealing with not being able to perform surgery due to a hand injury. This is reflective of the origin of Doctor Strange and plays well on the small screen. It would make sense to transfer the same storyline onto the big screen.

The Women

For the most part, Marvel has attempted to bring lesser-known characters to stardom through the Phase 1 movies. Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johannson, and Robert Downy Jr. were the known names before the Phase 1 Marvel movies, but many more names have become red carpet darlings since. Bringing Dempsey in to play Doctor Strange would bring more women into the theaters who want to see their favorite actor on the big screen. Comic book fans should not be discouraged by the idea of a Marvel movie bringing in an actor women would go for. In all honesty, some of you need a date and should hope for anything which can get you one.

Dempsey has made statements in the past that he wants the role. Marvel – just sign on the bottom line and get it over with already. I know there have been rumors about other actors taking the role, but Dempsey just fits.

Doctor Strange Needs His Own Title NOW

The market is ripe for a stand-alone Doctor Strange title. It is time for fans of the Sorcerer Supreme to speak up so the powers at Marvel can hear our pleas. We need more of the Master of the Mystic Arts and it is time for Marvel to comply. Where is Doctor Strange for the Dark Market? Comics are taking a darker turn right now with DC pushing its Dark line with titles such as Justice League Dark, Phantom Stranger, Swamp Thing, and the soon-to-launch Constantine. The Walking Dead is one of the essential comics on the market today with Hoax Hunters and other dark and horror titles gaining stronger followings each month. Doctor Strange would fit right in with this reemerging market and I am sure Marvel is not going to want to miss this boat.

TV Appearances

Doctor Strange has been important enough in the Marvel Universe to make multiple appearances on recent animated shows so the company should launch a new title with him to reinforce his importance. Episodes of “The Super Hero Squad Show” and “Ultimate Spider-Man” have both guest starred the Sorcerer Supreme, so it would make sense that if he was written into the shows, he could be written into his own title.

The 1970s

In recent history, characters that gained popularity in the 1970s but waned in the 1980s have gained popularity again. Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Valkyrie are just three examples of characters which have been “resurrected” or dusted off for the modern audiences. Why can’t Doctor Strange fit into this category?

Doctor Strange Movie

Marvel is having the script worked on for a Doctor Strange movie. It would make sense for the publishing company to reacquaint fans with the character as much as possible before the opening of the movie is scheduled. While his presence in New Avengers is good, it is not strong enough. Marvel needs to allow new fans to learn about the Sanctum Sanctorum and all of Doctor Strange’s allies and enemies. Hey Marvel – Get on that NOW!
