Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Only Days Away

Only days until Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and I get more excited with every passing day. As you might have noticed, there have not been as many posts as usual on WonderWorldComic.com. Some of you know I am on staff for the convention and have been working long hours to make sure everything on my end is order.

If you have the opportunity, look for me at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this weekend. At the after parties, I will have extra time for you to pick my brain, or tell me about perspectives we have put forth on this site (positively or negatively). I look forward to seeing many of you this weekend.

During Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and in the following days, I will be posting news, interviews, and observations from the convention. Kelly will be posting as well.

After the convention, we will be announcing some new additions to the WonderWorldComics.com family. Looking forward to that.

In case you have not noticed, Kelly will be running a panel on Sunday. I hope many of you come out to support her:

Gender in the Comics

Saturday 6:15 pm Regency A

Exploring the representations of “alternative” sexualities in comics specifically in DC and Marvel. The focus will be on the implications of these representations…what does it mean for the LGBT? Hosted by Kelly Jackson, a graduate student of American Literature and Culture. Her most recent research project is concerned with themes of colonialism as they relate to Captain America.

#DetroitFanfare Official Hashtag of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

From the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con website:

“#DetroitFanfare is officially a go! What is #DetroitFanfare? It is the official hashtag of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

If you are going to be talking about the convention on social media, please use the #DetroitFanfare hashtag. That way we do not drown Twitter and Facebook with fifty different variations of name in hashtag form.

We are looking forward to entertaining you all weekend long!”

I think it is a good idea that there is an “official” hashtag for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this year. I have seen many conventions in the past where people are posting about the convention using every variation of the convention name possible. Uniformity can help the convention gain more popularity and get any news coming from the convention out faster.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night Preview

Detroit Fanfare is just over a week away and I want to take a look at why you should attend Friday. Some of you might overlook the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night, but should not.

detroit-fanfareDetroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night

The Friday Preview Night is open to anyone with a weekend pass. The convention is only open from 6:00pm-9:00pm. There are also many events happening once the convention floor doors close.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night Events

Most of the convention-long events are opening on Friday including the convention floor, the 24 hour game room, and tabletop gaming. After the convention floor closes for the night, even more fun begins.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night After Events

The Shel Dorf Awards and Party will be taking place at 10:00pm. This is not only open to nominees and other industry figures, convention goers may attend as well.  You have the opportunity to sit at the same table with media and industry guests.

The Deadworld Zombie Walk will begin at 9:00pm. This is a fun event to participate in or watch. Immediately following, the Deadworld Zombie After Party will take place near the pool. There will be a DJ and dance floor. The Deadworld Zombie Costume Contest will take place at 11:30pm.

A sing-along showing of Little Shop of Horrors will take place at 11:30. Once you are done, you can attend either the Shel Dorf Awards Party or the Deadworld Zombie After Party.

Interesting Benefits of Attending the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night

Friday night has less traffic than the rest of the weekend. If you are planning on being at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con for the entire weekend, Friday is a great way to ramp up your energy levels. You can also have a better chance of seeing an industry or media guest up close. With less people around, they are sure you have an extra minute to speak with you.

The Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Preview Night also gives you the opportunity to check out the deals and shop around the convention floor. It is a great time to gauge everything for sale so you can decide which items or comics should enter your collection. The lessoned crowds also helps you to determine the best ways around the convention and a better idea of the overall layout of this year’s show. The addition of the other side of the hotel means there is much more Detroit Fanfare Comic Con than in past years. Give yourself the extra time to check it out.

Volunteers Still Needed for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con

The staff of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con still need volunteers for this year’s convention. If you volunteer, you will receive a bunch of goodies for your time including a free pass for the event, food, a t-shirt, a con-exclusive variant, and other comics. Follow this link to volunteer.

All Autographs $25 or Less for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is only two weeks and one day away, but there is something I think you should know about autographs at the event. You don’t have to worry about paying huge fees to get autographs this year.

The highest autograph fee for this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is $25. That is much lower than the $45-$60 we have all seen at other conventions around the country. It will be nice to get some good autographs this year without paying an arm and a leg.

Specific Guests

As readers already know, this site has covered Brian O’Halloran (Clerks), so he will be autographing free over the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con weekend. Tyler Mane does not charge anything for a photo is you purchase an autograph from him. As you know, if you have been to a comic book convention before, most comic book creators don’t charge anything for an autograph.

Instead of spending all of your money on autographs, you have money left to spend on comics, a room, or food. Don’t forget to eat!

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Coverage on WWC

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is quickly approaching, and WonderWorldComics.com will be there in full force. I have already told you about how we are sponsoring free autographs by Brian O’Halloran all weekend, but there is more to our presence than just that.

detroit-fanfareKelly’s First Comic Book Convention

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 will be Kelly’s first comic book convention. We are excited to introduce her to a form of pleasant madness she has never come in contact with before. As you well know, she will be deluged with information and action she has never come in contact with before. She is sure to write all about it in the weeks following.

Interviews

We have already begun lining up interviews for WonderWorldComics.com. Some interviews will be performed by Kelly, I will perform some, and a few will be performed by special guests. I would tell you more, but I don’t want to give away some of the interesting ideas we have.

In the Coming Days

In the coming days, I will start talking more about Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013. Expect tips for this year’s convention along with information everyone is going to want to know. I will discuss some of the events you are not going to want to miss out on, and expand on some of the information you will find on the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con website.

Your Central Location

WonderWorldComics.com will be at the center of everything going on during the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con weekend. Make sure you stop here beforehand for all of your DFF news and information – stop by here for all of the news coming out of the event – and stop by here afterwards to find out what you missed. This is going to be a great year for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and WWC is proud to tell you everything you need to know.

Brian O’Halloran Signing FREE at Detroit Fanfare by WonderWorldComics.com

Brian O’Halloran, the Master of Ceremonies Emeritus for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013, will be signing free autographs all weekend during Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con through a sponsorship by WonderWorldComics.com! I will let that sink in for a moment.

1379298_727763910574487_2047958377_nWhat’s Going On?

For months, people have been asking Dennis and I about what WonderWorldComics.com would do for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this year. We debated back and forth about different options, but we both agreed that it would be a great gift to everyone to give a guest who could sign free all weekend long.

Why Brian O’Halloran?

Why would we choose to have Brian O’Halloran sign free autographs all weekend long during Detroit Fanfare Comic Con? I used to have a dog named Dante who was named after Brian’s most famous character from Clerks. It just fits.

The Signing

Brian O’Halloran will autograph one item per person during Detroit Fanfare Comic Con weekend. People spend hours in line at some conventions and spend through the teeth to get one or two autographs. Through this sponsorship by WonderWorldComics.com, you can be guaranteed at least one autograph, no matter how much money you have in your pocket. Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con just got a little cooler.

Spread the Word!

Make sure your friends and family know about the free autographs from Brian O’Halloran the weekend of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con. I would hate to hear about someone who did not know about the opportunity until after the convention closed for the year.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Aspects I Am Looking Forward To

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con (check it out here) is quickly approaching, and there are a handful of reasons why this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con will stand above the previous three in my mind. These are more personal than public reasons, but some of them might meld with your convention experience as well.

Other Side of the Curtain

Many of you know that I covered the first three Detroit Fanfare Comic Cons for Yahoo! This year, I have taken a few behind-the-scenes positions on staff (Media Contact, Website Director, and a few others smaller roles). Instead of simply experiencing the show, I will know this year’s show is something I helped to build. It is an interesting switch.

Not Covering Detroit Fanfare Comic Con

Don’t worry about this section. I will not be covering Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, but this site still will be. Kelly will be covering her first convention and she will be reporting it as someone who is seeing something new for the first time. I am looking forward to her perspectives this year.

Derek Mears

While there are a ton of great guests this year, there is something interesting which Derek Mears symbolizes for me personally. After meeting Derek, I will have met every person ever to portray Jason Voorhees in a movie. An interesting accomplishment for a huge fan of the series to have met all twelve men. This year’s convention symbolizes a milestone in my fandom of the Friday the 13th series.

Fanimation Celebration

The Fanimation Celebration is one of the events at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con I am really looking forward to. I am hoping I will have enough time to hear the voice actors speak in the voices of the characters which have made them famous.

My Daughter’s First Convention

My five-year-old daughter, Maia, will be attending Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this year, and it will be her first convention. She is looking forward to it, and is as excited about going as I am to see her face when she sees superheroes walking around endless tables of comics.

The Friends

I have many friends in the industry and/or are collectors, who I only get to see at certain times of the year. I always look forward to conventions to catch up with those I am unable to during the rest of the year.

The Size and New Hotel in Same Location

I love the idea that Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is taking over more of the venue. I know there are tons of new events and activities planned this year to compensate for more room. I can’t wait to see what changes the Adoba has in store for this year over previous years.

The Parties

The parties will be a welcome end to long days of working on the convention. They have always been a blast, but the parties at this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con will be a welcome respite.

Even More?

There are also some other changes and event I am looking forward to this year, but I don’t want to ruin any surprises we have planned.

October Will be a BIG Month for Comics and Fans

As I am writing this, we are only a few days away from the beginning of September. My mind, though, is focused on October. Sure, the September War is going to be huge for the comic book industry, but we can’t forget that October is going to be one of the best months this year for comic book fans. There are many reasons why I am excited about the month that starts after the September War.

fanfareticketsDetroit Fanfare Comic Con!

Most people’s year starts on the first day of January. Mine begins on the first day of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con. I have attended each of the previous year’s Detroit Fanfares, and the convention is something I wait all year for. In the past, I have covered the event for another site, but as many of you know, I have taken a position on the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con staff so the convention is even more special to me now. We will knock your socks off. Click here to learn more.

The Walking Dead Returns!

We have waited too long to see what is going to happen to Rick and the other survivors. If it were not for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, Season 4 of The Walking Dead would hold the top spot. I can’t wait to start the new ride the creators will take us on!

AUG130800Daredevil #32

I am really looking forward to Daredevil crossing paths with Zombie, Frankenstein, and the other creatures on the Dark side of the Marvel Universe. From the preview picture, it also looks like he might be saying hello to Werewolf by Night as well. Ohhhh.

The Battle of the Atom and Fantomex MAX?

The Battle of the Atom will still be in full swing. Hopefully this crossover is one we will talk about positively for many years to come. When you add on the fact that Fantomex will be getting a MAX series, I foam at the mouth.

The Occultist #1

A new miniseries from my friend Tim Seeley and Mike Norton will be hitting shelves in October. I pop for dark comics, and this one looks to be right up my alley. I have said it before – I hope Dark Horse is able to spread out from the Star Wars realm, and The Occultist looks like a title which can get them on an interesting track.

Dia de Los Muertos Trade

Many people missed out on Dia de Los Mortos because not many were ordered around the country. I was only able to get my hands on the introductory issue, so the trade will be ready for my purchase. I highly suggest it simply due to the great story by my friend Dirk Manning.

Afterlife with Archie

I have to admit that I have not regularly read Archie titles in many (many) years, but Afterlife with Archie looks like it will be an interesting title. I have had my eye on this for money and can’t wait to get my hands on it.

My Return to the DC Comic Universe

With the last day of September, my personal penalty against DC Comics will be over. The Villain Month allocation will be a thing of the past, and I can pick up wherever I left off on the titles I read.

October is going to be a BIG month for me. Hopefully, it will be BIG for you as well.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 – What We Know So Far

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 is still over five months away, but this year’s show is shaping up to be one for the record books. The fourth year for the convention will be one which will open even more eyes to the type of comics-forward convention the Motor City can put on. Here is the information about Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 that we know so far.

detroit-fanfare

When?

Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con will be held from October 25 – October 27, 2013.

Where?

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 will be held at the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. This hotel used to be known as the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, but the location changed hands just after Detroit Fanfare 2012. Instead of simply having the left half of the first floor and a few rooms on the second floor, Detroit Fanfare Comic Con will not overtake the entire first floor of the Adoba Hotel Dearborn and a portion of the second floor. The convention will also still have full access to the Rotunda room on the top of the tower.

How Much?

Even though the convention is expanding, the promoters and staff are working hard to keep prices low. $15 will get you a one-day pass for the show. Weekend passes are only $20 and will get you in all three days. Children 12 and under will only be $5 on Friday and Saturday and will be free on Sunday. Parking will still be free.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 was able to negotiate great rates for those staying this year at the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. The special convention rate will be $87 a night (plus regular taxes and fees). Each room stayed in for the convention will receive two weekend passes (A $40 value)!

What is Returning?

The Shel Dorf Awards, the Detroit Fanfare Zombie Walk, and the 24 hour gaming room (in the Rotunda) will all return this year. You will still be able to get an arm-full of comics through Blood 4 Comics and potentially save a life in the process (which isn’t that what being a superhero is all about?). The live Rocky Horror Picture Show viewing will be back along with Speed Painting and the silent auction. Don’t forget about all of the Cosplay events, costume contests, and trick or treating on Sunday for the kids – they will return to this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con as well. A mermaid will be swimming again in the pool. Oh, and the Official Convention Party will be rocking the walls of the Adoba!

What is New for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013?

Even though the calendar reads May (as of this writing), the planning for new activities, events, and surprises is in full swing for October. The biggest (and most noticeable) change will be the expansion of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con within the walls of the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. Crowds will be splitting off in more directions with the addition of the rooms on the right side of the hotel.

This year, the main showroom will focus on vendors which are directly related to comics. You will find the room filled with tons of comics, graphic novels, and comics-related merchandise. A second showroom on the opposite side of the hotel will be called the Bizarre Bazaar and will be the home of people who sell cool items, but are not directly related to comics. Artists Alley and the areas for Media Guests and Comics Guests will also be expanded.

Kid’s Day on Sunday is expanding with the addition of a Monster High Ice Cream Social, the Fairy Princess Training Camp, and the kids will also be able to try a hand at miniature construction with special LEGO building activities.

Guests?

There are many months to announce guests, but the promoters and staff at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con have already made some big announcements. Brian O’Halloran (Dante from Clerks) will return this year to be the official Master of Ceremonies Emeritus! Comic book guests announce include Jim Starlin, Tim Seeley, Ryan Stegman, Arvell Jones, Keith Pollard, Dirk Manning, and many more. More guests are being added every week, so there will be a full roster to tell everyone about as the months pass.

New Website! 😉

The new website for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 should be easier to maneuver than in past years. It will be updated on a regular basis to give you all of the information you need to know when you need to know it!

This will be a huge year for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con! Check out the convention’s website and this website for more information as it becomes available. The promoters and staff are looking forward to a record-breaking year which will show why Detroit Fanfare is Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con and why it is the best!
