Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? – An Exploration

Comic book forums have been buzzing about the suggestion of Michael Collins as Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The question is; would it make sense to have Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

What the Heck Happened?

Jeffrey Bell was asked by IGN if the African-American character in the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. previews was Luke Cage. While answering the question by confirming that it was not Luke Cage, Bell apparently made an “M” sound and then scoffed at himself for almost stating the actual character’s name. Fans have deduced that the “M” might stand for Michael Collins which would mean that we might see Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There is another potential character which could make for an interesting addition, but I will talk about that in another article which you can read by following this link.

Is There a Setup for Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

The Michael Collins version of Deathlok could easily be a character in the Marvel Universe since Roxxon Oil is the parent company of Cybertek (the cybernetics company Collins worked for) has been established through all three Iron Man movies and through the one-shot, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer. Not sure about the setups? Read on.

Are You Sure?

The Roxxon logo can be seen in the background of the main fight scene in Iron Man. One of the cars in the Monaco Grand Prix in Iron Man 2 is sponsored by Roxxon. Roxxon Oil is mentioned many times in Iron Man 3 with the accountant who is held captive and killed works for Roxxon. Also, the tanker at the climax is a Roxxon Oil tanker. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer takes place in a Roxon Gas Station. Remember, Marvel has been good so far about mixing in possible future storyline hints into media.

Plausibility of Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

While anything is possible in the Marvel Universe, it would make sense to have Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The show would promote a character which is rarely used and most people in the general populace do not know about. If people do not know about a character, they can’t have preconceived notions of him. Some might even call Deathlok a “forgotten” character in the Marvel Universe so even long-term readers will have forgotten more than they remember.

Mixing of Man and Machine

S.H.I.E.L.D. brainpower and technology is a great mixture of man and machine. Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would display one of the greatest mixtures of man and machine possible. The team could have a superhero at their back without having to explore the supernatural or superpowers. They would only need to explore technology in the storytelling and it is already estabilished that technology in the Marvel Universe is much better than ours.

I would personally love to see Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. We will learn as the months progress if Deathlok in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is something to look forward to or not.
