Entertainment Weekly is “confirming” that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch have been written into the Avengers 2 script. Since the report uses “sources” which have gone unnamed, we should not take this report as fact…yet. If you are a regular reader, you know I shy away from rumors. When a rumor is being reported as fact, I can’t keep my mouth shut.
Marvel’s Response to Avengers 2 Rumor
Kevin Feige, the final decision maker over at Marvel Studios has stated that “I’m not confirming or denying. The draft could change six months from now.” Essentially, he is telling everyone to take this rumor about Avengers 2 with a grain of salt.
The Colossus Example
Remember back to 1999 when we heard that Colossus was going to be in X-Men in 2000. All we got was a brief cameo of a teenager drawing sketches in the courtyard. In 2002, we heard that Daniel Cudmore had been cast as Colossus and would play a major role in the following year’s X2. He was onscreen briefly and many viewers missed his cameo during the action. Even if they are written into the script, we should not believe they will make more than a brief appearance in Avengers 2 until we are officially told otherwise.
May Never Make it In
Do you remember Tobey Maguire’s cameo in Life of Pi? Do you remember Uma Thurman playing Blake Lively’s mother in Savages? Do you remember Angela Bassett playing the spy boss in Mr. & Mrs. Smith? All of these actors were cast in roles which never made it past the editing room. Even if someone is cast as Quicksilver and someone as the Scarlet Witch, we should not believe anything until we see the previews for Avengers 2.
Feige’s Statement
Feige pointed out that the script for Avengers 2 might change before shooting. There are many movies which change script mid-shooting. In fact, if you listen to some of the commentaries about Mr. & Mrs. Smith, you would know that the script changed so many times during shooting that many people wondered if the movie would be finished. The same could hold true for Avengers 2.
Rumors Rumor Rumors
Remember that what we are hearing is simply rumors right now about Avengers 2 and about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Always question an article which states something as “fact” from “unnamed sources” and then follows up with a statement saying that the person in the know cannot confirm or deny and that things might change. I would love to see Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Avengers 2, but I am not going to hold my breath.
