IDW Publishing, IDW Entertainment, and the TV Market

News recently broke that IDW Publishing has created a new division, IDW Entertainment, to work on getting IDW Publishing properties on TV. I see this as a strong move and believe all comic book publishing companies should look into having similar divisions.

Why TV?

The Walking Dead, Arrow, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are only the tip of the iceberg. Marvel and DC Comics have both recently stated that they are looking into having more shows on TV, why shouldn’t there be a space for IDW Publishing? Zenescope has been pushing for a TV series for well over a year, it is time that some of the other companies stepped up to the plate. The advertising dollars and extra exposure could shift the market considerably.

Why Now?

It makes sense for IDW Publishing to get into the comic book-based TV market now since it is still in infancy. Next year would be too late.

I am looking forward to good things from IDW Publishing in regards to the TV market. I wish my friends there good luck.

Thoughts on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 4

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4 was a bit of a let-down for me, but I understood why it had to be a let-down. Certain storytelling devices needed to be used early on in the season, but I think the series creators sacrificed substance for emotion. I also had a major WTF? moment.

Is Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a good enough representation?

Not happy with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4

Storytelling Devices

When telling an ensemble story, such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., creators have to use certain devices (tricks) which will bring closure to certain personality and conflict issues while adding more personality and conflict issues. These issues help to define characters as we typically understand characters through how they deal with the world around them and hurdles which need to be overcome.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 4 and Storytelling Devices

Think about how Skye and Agent Coulson apparently settled their differences in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4. This was to add more cohesion to the team and give the viewers more of an emotional tie to both Skye and Agent Coulson.

Agent May needs to be solidified as a team player. An example was given of a worst-case scenario of a person who was not acting as a team player to give her an example. The device was fairly predictable as non-team players always learn from a worst-case scenario.

In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4, we found something from Agent Coulson’s past creeping up on him to show how he has changed. Storytellers often show how things could be better or worse by delving into the leader’s past. Those on the team are supposed to find comfort from things being better now or things being worse now and gain a better acceptance of the leader’s humanity.

The show was not initially picked up for an entire season. Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4 fell into a tryout period, creators had to use as many plot devices as possible to gain the most connections possible with fans. I expect these devices to be regurgitated throughout the next few episodes until the full schedule of the series section has been passed.

My Major WTF? Moment from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 4

When Fitz, Simmons, and Skye were in the van in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4, they blew off the possibility of being able to predict the future or any other psionic power. Really? You have a person who can turn himself into a giant green monster through radiation, a super soldier who was frozen in ice for a few generations and survived, a man with a super suit which can knock out buildings, and a demigod running around the planet, and you don’t think psionic powers are possible? The world was just attacked by aliens who had an alliance with a demigod from another dimension and you don’t believe in psionic powers? Really?

The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere – Thoughts

The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere is easily the best season premiere the show has had. While there were a few shortcomings in the story, I was happy the season could start out on a strong foot. Hopefully the momentum of The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere is an omen for a great season ahead. There are spoilers here. If you have not watched yet – go away.

The Walking Dead

Should there be cannibals on The Walking Dead?

What I Liked in The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere

  1. I love when the show creators zoom forward in the future. This was something welcome in The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere. I like having to play catch-up.
  2. The zombie rain the grocery store was one of the best effects I have seen in the history of The Walking Dead. By placing this type of effect in The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere, the new show-runner proved we should expect anything at any time.
  3. No Governor? Good. I was hoping they would keep him off the premiere to give more impact when he showed up.
  4. It is about time the creators of the show made someone die in the middle of the night and turn into a walker. This is something which has always been a cloud hanging overhead. It is definitely time they address it.
  5. Having Daryl being the one standing under the helicopter was a great idea. From that moment in The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere, we all remember that Daryl can go at any time.
  6. The eyeless zombie is one of my favorite of all time.
  7. Seeing the Woodbury survivors milling in with the known survivors is a good move. There is enough time to break up the cliques which might have formed.
  8. The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere gave us a strong look at the kids of the show. I am sure there are people who do not like the idea of “TWD Kids,” but it adds another element to the story and more challenges.
  9. What is with the pig? Could it be the sign that pigs are going to start turning? They do have internal organs which are similar to some of humans. Their immune systems are also similar. Of course, it could also be the insertion of a livestock disease which could be making the humans sick.

What I Did Not Like in The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere

I know that The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere takes place months in the future from the last season, but there are a few aspects which bothered me. I also know many of these issues will be clarified in the upcoming weeks – but these issues still remain in my mind.

  1. Both Daryl and Michonne are charismatic, cracking jokes, and smiling. Part of their mystique is their stand-offishness and their inability to strive in social situations. They are wildcards which don’t go with the rest of the pack.
  2. Rick and the survivors spent weeks (if not months) trying to get Daryl to stay near the rest of them at Hershel’s farm. He tried to keep clear of most of them at the prison during the previous season unless he needed to be. Now he is part of the council? It does not make sense with his personality. He is a problem solver, not a leader.
  3. During the break between the previous season and The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere, the survivors have created spikes to impale walkers around the gate. Why couldn’t they come up with barricades which would keep walkers away from the fence?
  4. The entire segment with Eddie (the head) and his wife needed to be explained on Talking Dead. Not a good move. While I really liked the directing in the episode, the question of “why was this section here?” was not apparent during the episode and should have been developed better. Granted, her character was to display giving up, but it was too drawn out for that type of message, especially since we have heard the message before.
  5. How can anyone survive long in a cloth tent?
  6. Isn’t there a gaping hole in the back of the prison where Tyreese and his crew came in which has never been fixed? Shouldn’t that have been seen well before The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere?
  7. If Rick is not part of the council, why would Carol not want Carl to tell him about teaching the kids about fighting? Rick does not have a say.
  8. Batteries are probably hot commodities. Why would the survivors be using them in iPods to listen to music?

Overall, I was more than satisfied with The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere. I am looking forward to an awesome season.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Picked Up for Full Season…Duh

The minds behind the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Facebook page have made an announcement that the show has been picked up for the full season on ABC. Now, I could be wrong, but wasn’t that a foregone conclusion? Isn’t that like me coming out an declaring that I will be discussing Detroit Fanfare Comic Con on this site? Maybe it would be like a weatherperson saying that “The sun will come up tomorrow?”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Too Big to Fail

Not to downplay the announcement about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. being picked up for the full season, but the show is too important to ABC, Marvel, and Disney as a whole to not be picked up for the entire season. The thought that it could not have been is so foreign to me that I can’t even fathom it as a possibility.

Kelly Explores: A Wonder Woman Movie

About a month ago, I bought the first trade of the New 52 Wonder Woman for my 13-year-old cousin. Because she’s young and people on the internet can be creepers (and off the internet, if we’re being completely honest), I’ll just refer to her as Bee for this article.

Kelly Jackson. The latest contributor to WonderWorldComics.com

I got home from work today and as soon as I walked in the door, Bee gave me this HUGE smile and said, “Kelly, I finished Wonder Woman!”

“Did you like it?” I asked.

Bee nodded excitedly.

“What did you like about it?”

“She fights a lot and she wins!”

I laughed. “What was your favorite part?”

“The part where she fights! I was kinda bored with it so I sort of stopped paying attention but then Wonder Woman was fighting and I got interested again.”

Then she asked the ultimate question: “When does the Wonder Woman movie come out?”

I had to explain to her that they aren’t making a Wonder Woman movie. Some people want to, but there are roadblocks all over the place, and there are some executives who think that it’s just too hard; Wonder Woman doesn’t have “a single, clear, compelling” origin story and that makes it really difficult to write a movie for her.

READ: “We’re trying so hard (but not really) to make a great movie (but not really), but we’re having such a problem because Wonder Woman’s too complex. WRITING GIRLS IS HARD, OKAY?”

Bee was not at all happy to hear this. In her words, not mine: “Wonder Woman is just like Batman. She’s fighting a she’s trying to do the right thing and why won’t they make a movie for HER, but they’ve made a whole bunch for Batman!”

From the mouths of babes. Bee’s absolutely right, by the way. There really is no excuse for DC/Warner Brothers NOT to have a Wonder Woman movie planned, cast, and filming right now. And Bee’s brother, we’ll call him R, made a great point, too, which I’ve seen floating around in memes:

Isn’t Marvel doing a movie starring Rocket Raccoon? I didn’t even know who that was before the Marvel vs. Capcom game.”

Bee’s response was priceless: “BUT THERE’S NO WONDER WOMAN MOVIE?!”

Take heed, DC/Warner Brothers: You’re really pissing off a young generation that’s all but begging you to make this movie. Bee is most definitely not the only teenaged girl who wants to see Wonder Woman kick some ass onscreen. Maybe you ought to use some of the millions you made from the Dark Knight franchise to survey young audience members and ask what they want. Just a suggestion.

The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere – Low Expectations

We are just days away from The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere, and I am already getting myself mentally ready for the episode. There are certain statements I am making to myself to make sure I am not impacted by certain issues we have seen in the past with season premieres of The Walking Dead.

Don’t Expect the Episode of the Year Out the Gate

For the past two seasons on The Walking Dead, we have seen season-openers which were pretty flat. Many of us took to the Internet asking if this was going to be a horrible season based on the first episode. So far, we have not been let down by the rest of the season. I am already figuring that The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere will be one of the low episodes of the season.

The Walking Dead

Based on past year’s examples, I have low expectations of The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere

Don’t Expect Much Action in The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere

Season 2 and Season 3 both started off with slower episodes. We have the opportunity to see how life has improved for Rick and the survivors, and we should not expect anything different with The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere.

Don’t Expect Much of The Governor Just Yet

I would be surprised if we saw The Governor in The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere. I would also not be surprised if we only say him briefly. I have a strong feeling we will just see more of him as the season goes on. We can be reminded of him out of the gate, but not much else.

Don’t Rely Fully on Preconceived Notions

Of course, I also know that the show’s creators could toss my previous ideas from this article out the window. The crazy thing with the show is that we could start out The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere with a huge zombie attack. I doubt it, but it would make for an interesting start to the season.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3 Thoughts

So many thoughts after watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3. There were ups and downs, and changes which I liked and others which I am slightly leery of. I do not like giving spoilers on this site, but the show aired last night. If you have not had the chance to watch it yet, what are you doing reading this article?

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3 was pretty darn good

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3 was pretty darn good

The Birth of Graviton?

I don’t want to bust anyone’s bubble, but I knew we were going to see the birth of Graviton very early on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3. Due to a little project I am working on, I was reminded of Dr. Franklin Hall being the real name of Graviton. It was fresh in my mind last night, and I knew that somehow, we would see how Graviton came into being.

On the flip, though, I am very happy to see the “birth” of a character on the show. I want to see characters we know from the comics on the TV series. I want to see how these characters are developed on the small scree as compared to how they were developed in the comics. The final scene of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3 has me waiting to see what happens next.

Not sure who Graviton is?

Some Aspects Too Early?

Is it too early in the series to make Skye into a fighter on the team? Is it too early to make Melinda May want to enter the field? After two previous episodes, it feels rushed to have these changes happen in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3. Maybe it would be something better left for later episodes. Of course, it has happened now, but I can still have the feeling it was rushed. Maybe, they could have had the team get into more trouble here and there because of one character having no experience. Not sure.

Stick Around

I was happy to hear Clark Gregg’s voice after the traditional end of the show telling people to stick around for more of the show. This was a nice touch which reinforces how the true ending of each episode is supposed to knock your socks off.

The Jump

I would be remised if I did not comment on a piece of editing done during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3. In the previews, we see Skye jump from the ledge and her skirt fly up exposing her underwear. This was edited from the show. Let’s put aside the sexuality of the shot and discuss the editing aspect for a moment.

When people tuned in for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3, they already had some preconceived notions about the show based on the preview for the episode. Of course, changes are made for various reasons, but it is not something which I have ever approved of. If you are going to show something in a preview, or have a quote in a preview, make damn sure it is in the episode. People lose faith if It is not. This is something which is done regularly on shows such as Castle, and it irritates me beyond belief. I don’t want Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to give me a turn-off.

Overall, though, I have to say that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 3 was the best one so far even if it did not have Nick Fury in it.

Thoughts on Constantine TV Series

NBC and DC Comics are teaming up to work on a Constantine TV series. This comes during a string of announcements about upcoming TV series based on DC Comics properties. Yesterday, I told you about my mixed feelings about Gotham, so what do I think about a Constantine TV series?

Interested in the idea of a Constantine TV series

Interested in the idea of a Constantine TV series

Constantine

Simply put, Constantine is one of my favorite New 52 characters. I love the character in Justice League Dark, and in his own series. I have even found myself picking up issues of the Swamp Thing whenever John Constantine crosses over into that title.

Justice League Dark Movie

I am disturbed by the potential that a Constantine TV series could kill the idea of a Justice League Dark movie. At the same time, though, it could improve the chances of the movie being made if the character becomes popular enough on TV.

Crossovers and Appearances on Constantine TV Series

Could we see the Swamp Thing on a Constantine TV series? How about Deadman? How about the Phantom Stranger or The Question? Heck, we might even get the formation of the Justice League Dark on TV.

Could Constantine TV Series Work?

With the dark tales being told on TV these days (Grimm, Once Upon a Time, The Walking Dead, American Horror Story), there is a huge market for a horrifying comic book character. Mix in the fact that comic book-based TV shows are so hot right now, and a Constantine TV series looks like a given.

Why NBC?

Nobody watches The CW. DC Comics and Warner Bros. are going to want to make money on a show.

Will I Watch?

As long as the Constantine TV series follows the best version of Constantine (the British one), I will find myself looking forward to the show. The Flash and Constantine are two proposed DC Comics shows which I will have to make time for each week.

My Early Thoughts on Gotham TV Series

Word has come out that Fox and DC Comics have launched Gotham, which will follow Commissioner Gordon in his days on the force before meeting up with Batman. I have mixed feelings about the series.

No Batman…But Villains

Gotham will not have Batman, but it will have the villains which have made the superhero famous for generations. This aspect, for me, makes the series interesting. The villains are part of what makes the comics strong, and hopefully will translate well to the small screen.

Birds of Prey

A story which takes place in Gotham without Batman? Why is it that I can’t stop thinking of Birds of Prey when I think of Gotham? I am sure Gotham will not be as bad as its predecessor, but the stigma still exists in my mind.

Which Versions of Villains?

We have seen many versions of the DC Comics villains over the years. Let’s take a look at Joker, for example. He has been a prankster, a slapstick clown, a rapid killer, and (most recently) a dark character who could not care less about anything other than causing fear and tormenting those he does not like. Which version will we see in Gotham? Fans of either of the versions are sure to have some bit of disappointment.

We will have to wait and see how Gotham plays out. Hopefully, my concerns will come to pass. Check back in the next few days to see my ideas about Constantine.

Potentials of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Random Thoughts

I just got done watching the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere and am left with some interesting ideas of potentials for the series. There are areas which Marvel can use to increase market share, bring in more readers, and make a mark in the comic book industry which no other company can compare with.

Is Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a good enough representation?

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Extremis on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Did you happen to notice that Extremis was mentioned on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? I am sure many viewers who had not heard the term and are looking it up on Google or Yahoo! right now. They are trying to figure out what the term means in the Marvel Universe. Current comic book readers who know what Extremis is are sure to go through the series to see how it might attach to the show. Readers who have considered reading it might pick it up. People who don’t read comics might head to a store to pick up a copy. [Shameless plug – check it out in our Amazon store]

More Storylines

Who knows what major storylines from the Marvel Universe might come up in conversation during Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or be explored on the show? maybe we can see something along the lines of Civil War, Contest of Champions, or Nick Fury’s War. Each of these storylines (and more) could be referenced and bring new readers to comic book stores around the country. Note, referencing comics and reflecting comics is something which has drawn new readers into comic book stores due to The Walking Dead. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could push comic book stores to the next new height.

Could it Be?

Tell me that you weren’t hoping that the “Hooded Hero” was Miles Morales. Marvel can keep viewers and comic book readers on the edges of their seats by making them hope for comic book references. I noticed Twitter began to trend #MilesMorales for a few minutes. This can help Marvel and comic book stores and fans try to figure out who this Miles guy is.

Centipede and the Doctor

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has set the stage for a reoccurring issue and villain on the show through Centipede and the Doctor. This is strong for the show as fans look forward to what these villains will do next.

Villains

I have spoken in the past about how dragging forgotten villains from the past could be something great for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Let’s see the Sons of the Serpent, Porcupine, or the Leaper. Drag up some of the character few have heard of to draw new readers into the Marvel Essentials and Marvel Masterpieces. Let the readers look into the older comics.

I am looking forward to seeing what will happen next on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I have only listed a handful of potentials here. At this point, though, the potentials are endless.

What If Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Premiere Flops?

Do we have overly-zealous expectations of the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere? What happens if the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere is a flop? What is the worst case scenario?

Is Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a good enough representation?

Is Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a good enough representation?

Marvel is Weakened if Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Premiere Flops

First off, Marvel, as a brand, would be weakened. Instead of looking at Marvel as the overall leader in the industry (due to typical market share numbers, box office returns, marketing dollars, etc.), the markets involved will have to reevaluate the company. Questions would be asked about the strength of the company and the feasibility of it being able to drag itself up from a defeat.

Comic Book-Based TV Market

The strength of the comic book-based TV market would also come into question. While I do not see an failure during the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere as directly impacting established shows such as The Walking Dead and Arrow, it would have an impact on shows which might come out in the future as network execs assume the market has dried up or their time has passed.

Weaken Next Marvel Movies Phases

If the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere is a flop, I can see it weakening the next few phases of Marvel movies. Every upcoming movie coverage would hint at how the TV series did not go as planned and be pointed to as a sign of weakness in the market. Signs of weakness will push off investors and potential advertisers.

As of this writing (Monday before Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere), I do not foresee the premiere being a flop, but anything can happen. I know some people in the media have seen the premiere already and not commented about anything but how good it is. You never know, though, how the viewing public will accept something until it is accepted. We will have to wait until tomorrow night to see.

My Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Premiere Predictions

Three more weeks until the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere. Three more weeks until our questions begin to get answered. Three more weeks until we get to see the greatest strike in the history of the September War. It is time for my Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere prediction.

Is Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a good enough representation?

Is Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a good enough representation?

Simply Put

I am expecting nothing less than Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. having the biggest television premiere ever. I expect the first episode to make certain Super Bowls look silly.

Not the Only Record

I fully expect Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to have the biggest numerical drop-off of viewers between the first and second episode in history. I don’t think that this will be a reflection, though, of the quality of the show.

This is a Major Event

The Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere is a major event which ABC has been pushing for months. There is not another show debuting this year which has had more of a push. Blacklist does not even come close when you consider the hype from Comic-Con. People are going to adjust their schedules to make sure they are home for the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiere. This show’s premiere is a watershed moment for the comic book industry, and countless fans will tune in to see if the hype was worth it.

The Second Week

All shows, no matter how good, will have a drop off between the first week and the second week. People decide they don’t like the show, while others who did like the show just wait for it to come on OnDemand or on another replay service. Others might not be able to cook their schedules the same way the next week, so will have to see it at a later hour as well.

By the Numbers

I do not see Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. having the biggest percentage drop from week one to week two, but the greatest number of people dropping. When this is the biggest premiere in history, it will be easy to see how the average drop-off percentages would translate into more people than usual. Just don’t believe the media hype when they try to make Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. look like a second week failure.

Why So Much Comic Book Movie Casting News Right Now?

For weeks, comic book news and information sites have been filled with comic book movie casting news. Once the fevered pitch of discussion dies down, another bit of comic book movie casting news comes out. Why is all of this information coming out right now? There are many parts to this puzzle.

Ben Affleck as Batman proves consistency at DC Comics

Ben Affleck as Batman proves consistency at DC Comics

Keeping Spotlight After San Diego Comic-Con International

Comic book movie casting news is hot since comic book movies are the hottest commodity in entertainment right now. Marvel and DC Comics loved the focus during Comic-Con, but knew they needed to do something to stay relevant to the general public afterwards. These announcements work perfectly.

Comic Book Movie Casting News Battles Comic Book Movie Casting News

What is the best thing to do when you opponent makes a huge announcement? Make one or two of your own. This steals thunder away from the other guys and brings it to your side of the fence. Corporations save up announcements for a long time in order to simply steal the spotlight if the competition says something big.

Bridging the Gap

September is the biggest battle month of the year on the comic book industry because all of the focus is on Image in October because of The Walking Dead. Enter, the September War.

Granted, these major announcements all happened in August, but it bridged the gap between the hot and heated action in July with Comic-Con and the sparks that will fly in September.

Are the Comic Book Movie Casting Announcements Done?

I highly doubt that the comic book movie casting announcements are done. I would expect at least a few in September to keep the ball rolling into the battle month. There might also be one or two big ones saved for a few days before the premiere of The Walking Dead, or a day or two after. The comic book companies need to stay relevant, and comic book movie casting news keeps them in the most-searched lists on Google and Yahoo!.

Don’t believe me? Check out these big announcements and talk:

Ben Affleck

James Spader

James Spader as Ultron in The Avegners: Age of Ultron – Thoughts

So we have an announcement about the casting of James Spader as Ultron in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. In the wake of the announcement of Ben Affleck as Batman, does the announcement of James Spader as Ultron impress me? Oh Hell yes!

James Spader as Ultron in The AVengers: Age of Ultron!

James Spader as Ultron in The AVengers: Age of Ultron!

Simply Put

James Spader could play a rock and I would pay money to see it. Why? The man is a great actor and has proven time and time again in recent years that he is one of the top actors in the business.

He’s Not on My Blacklist

We have seen commercials all summer about his upcoming series, The Blacklist. I remember telling someone a few weeks ago that the previews alone for the series prove how the actor could play an ultimate bad guy. I even went so far as to say that they could cast him as Lex Luthor and I would bypass my hatred of Superman simply to see him in the role. My wife and I are looking forward to watching his new show, and now I have another reason to look forward to The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

But Ultron is a Robot…

Someone is going to make the argument that Ultron is supposed to be a robot. Yes, but James Spader as Ultron is a good move. I am sure he can pull this one off. If he does not, I will wear a Superman outfit one day to work.

Proving Once Again

With James Spader as Ultron, Marvel proves once again that its casting department is much better than the one at Warner Bros. How could I not be happy with that? Congrats DC Comics…this casting announcement will finally take the spotlight off of the major mistake you made by allowing Warner Bros to cast Ben Affleck as Batman. The Marvel Age of Movies continues on.

Don’t Support Ben Affleck as Batman – Fans Have Been Right Before

One of the hottest topics in comics right now is the casting of Ben Affleck in the role of Batman. So many are coming to the side of the actor by pointing out certain instances in which comic book fans were wrong about the casting of particular actors in roles in superhero movies. This is a horrible argument against comic book fans because we have been right in our accusation on many occasions.

I Admit Mistakes

Ben Affleck as Batman proves consistency at DC Comics

Ben Affleck as Batman will suck

Michael Keaton as Batman

Heath Ledger as Joker

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

David Morrissey as The Governor

These are just a couple examples of times in which we complained about castings only to be pleasantly surprised with the final product. I could add RDJ to this list for his casting as Tony Stark/ Iron Man, but I would not be acting honestly with myself. That is one casting I have to admit that I liked from the start because there is no better actor for playing a character which has hit rock bottom than an actor who has hit rock bottom himself. Of course, Tony has not hit rock bottom in the movies yet, but I look forward to seeing it.

Times When Our Positivity Was Right On

I know you are waiting to see some of the names I put down as some of the worst superhero castings of all time, but let’s take a look at some we supported (as a majority) from the beginning and we were happy we were right:

Anthony Hopkins as Odin

Sir Ian McKellen as Magneto

Gerard Butler as Leonidas

Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull

Patrick Stewart as Professor X

Other Times We Were Wrong

There were also times in which we supported certain casting choices in superhero movies in which we were completely wrong. The actor might have been great, but the end product was depressing:

Michael Chicklis as Thing

Halle Berry as Catwoman

Jennifer Garner as Elektra

Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor

What We Should Look At

Instead of just talking about when we were wrong, or when our positivity paid off, let’s take a look at when we were right about the wrong choice being made:

George Clooney as Batman

Val Kilmer as Batman

Topher Grace as Venom

Shaq as Steel

Nicholas Cage as Ghost Rider

Brandon Routh as Superman

Collin Ferrell as Bullseye

Ben Affleck as Daredevil

The list goes on and on. Remember, too, we were right when complaining about Ben Affleck the first time with Daredevil – I have a feeling we will be right again.

David Morrissey, The Walking Dead, AMC Pilot, and Your Underwear

Many on the Internet are freaking out about David Morrissey, The Governor on The Walking Dead, being cast in an AMC pilot. They are taking the announcement about the potential show, Line of Sight, which would star Morrissey, as an omen that he will not last very long on the show. Don’t get your underwear in a bunch. This is not a major slip.

The Governor on The Walking Dead

The Governor on The Walking Dead

A Pilot is a Pilot

So David Morrissey was cast in a pilot. How easy people forget that pilots do not automatically become shows. Remember the Wonder Woman fiasco? Pilots are shot all the time, and do not make it out of the gate. There are also times in which pilots are requested, but never get made. David Morrissey could easily shoot the pilot during an off-week of The Walking Dead shooting.

This Could Take Some Time

There could be a very long time between now (the casting) and when the pilot for Line of Sight is actually shot. If AMC loves the series, it could take another year or two before it goes into production. That could give David Morrissey as many as two more years as The Governor on The Walking Dead.

What This Actually Says About AMC and David Morrissey

The pilot for Line of Sight does not mean that we should expect to see David Morrissey killed off of The Walking Dead in the coming months. In actuality, it means that AMC has faith in the actor we have grown to respect for his role as The Governor. It means that he has shown his ultimate bosses that he can deliver.

How Long Do I Expect to See The Governor?

In my opinion, I would be surprised if The Governor lasted past Season 5 of The Walking Dead. I would like to see the creators keep David Morrissey as The Governor, and The Governor as a thorn in Rick’s side throughout this season, and through at least an episode of the next season. Make the death of The Governor a milestone in the show. Make it the big event to open Season 5 of The Walking Dead.

Success of The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere Too Factored to Predict

The Walking Dead Season 4 is approaching, and people are trying to predict how huge the season premiere will be. Will viewership for The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere set a new record for the show? Will it set a new record for cable? Actually, I see it as impossible to predict as there are way too many factors involved this year.

The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere Will be HUGE

Yes, The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere will be huge. How huge will be determined by certain factors listed below.

The Walking Dead

Should there be cannibals on The Walking Dead?

Season 4 Hump

The fourth season of a show is often called a “hump season.” At this point, most shows have had a declarable shark jump, but not so (that we can tell) with The Walking Dead. There are very few shows which have had a larger fourth season than third season. One easy example would be The X-Files. Even The Big Bang Theory has a drop from the third season to the fourth. We have to consider that most shows have a fall-off in viewership after the third season.

Fan Dedication

The Walking Dead should be considered with shows such as The X-Files because both shows have/had very dedicated fans who wanted to know everything possible about the show and refused to miss a week due to their dedication and the dedication of those who they talk to who also watch the show. We will see the dedication of the “deadheads” during the The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere. They will be the core audience which AMC will attempt to build on. The number of dedicated fans increases with every marathon of the show, so AMC can pad the premiere numbers a little more with a strong marathon in the upcoming weeks.

Market Promotion

The more marketing AMC does going into the premiere, the bigger it will be. AMC and Image Comics have done great jobs so far in promoting the show. If they let up in the next eight weeks or so, the season premiere will be lacking.

The BIG Wild Card

The wild card which prevents us from being able to say how HUGE The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere will be is the third season finale. It was lacking in closure since The Governor is still alive and it did not give us a cliffhanger which would make us tune in this October. Rick simply letting in a bunch of old people and children did not hold a drop next to some of the cliffhangers the show has become notorious for in the past. Some disappointed fans will not be back next season. How many are disappointed enough to stay away is left to be seen.

New Spawn Movie Could be a Catalyst

Over the weekend at Fan Expo, Todd McFarlane talked about a new Spawn movie, and about the possibility of it starting shooting as early as next year. The thought about a new Spawn movie got me thinking about which other comic book-based movies should be remade.

New Spawn movie?

New Spawn movie?

The Bar Has Been Set

The recent Marvel movies have set the bar very high for comic book-based movies, and this has to be considered for a new Spawn movie as well as with any remade movie. When looking at most of the comic book-based movies over the years, there are very few which can hold a candle to the current Marvel movies. The easy exceptions which come to mind would be the first two Christian Bale Batman movies, Sin City, the first two Spider-Man movies, and the initial two Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. Feel free to disagree.

New Spawn Movie a Beginning?

We all know that the Fantastic Four is being worked on for a reboot and I have heard whispers from time to time about a redone Punisher movie. In all honesty, it would be difficult to make worse movies than we have seen in the past with these titles. I see definitive action towards a new Spawn movie would be a catalyst for other comic book-based movies to be remade.

The Good and the Bad

On one hand, we will have some comic book fans who will be upset that newer characters (who have not been in movies) are not being looked at. At the same time, we have the chance of finally having the movies these characters deserve. I hope to see a new Spawn movie in the future, and I hope to see some of the other poorly made comic book-based movies redone as well. As I stated before, they can’t be any worse. Just don’t remake Howard the Duck.

Stan Lee’s Reality TV Show Sounds Interesting

With all of the other news going around today (Ben Affleck, Justice League Canada), you might not have heard about Stan Lee’s reality TV show. The project is being worked on, and the great creator could not talk about much. This sounds like an interesting project.

The Jest of Stan Lee’s Reality TV Show

During Fan Expo, Stan Lee “let information slip” about an upcoming reality TV show he is working on which will search for the next great comic book writers and artists out there. Contestants will be judged, and voted off when needed.

Stan Lee’s Reality TV Show Great for Creators

If this project comes to fruition, it will be a great opportunity for lesser-known creators to get noticed. Any opportunity for lesser-known creators to get noticed is a good thing. Even if a creator does not win, he or she might still be picked up on the open market for a particular project.

Stan Lee’s Reality TV Show Great for Fans

As comic book fans, we can often get pigeonholed in our reading. We might find ourselves only gravitating towards certain publishers, certain writers, or certain artists. We might only look at the comics from a particular “family” and forget that there are other titles to explore. Stan Lee’s reality TV show could open all of our eyes to new styles we had not considered before.

Voting on Stan Lee’s Reality TV Show

I am interested to see how the voting panel would be made up. Could we see reps from Marvel DC Comics, Image, and IDW share the judge’s table? Would comic book fans be able to do the voting?

At this point, I am hoping that Stan Lee’s reality TV show comes into being. It would be a great opportunity for creators, and a great opportunity for fans to be exposed to various types of creators.

Ben Affleck as Batman Proves Consistency at DC Comics

Ben Affleck as Batman! Ben Affleck as Batman! Ben Affleck as Batman!

The big news last night was how Ben Affleck has been given the role of Batman for the Man of Steel sequel. I think this was a fitting decision by DC Comics and look forward to more decisions like this in the future. I love when a company proves it can be consistent.

Ben Affleck as Batman proves consistency at DC Comics

Ben Affleck as Batman proves consistency at DC Comics

Super Hype / Delivery

Ever since the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con International, Batman/Superman has been lauded as the greatest movie endeavor DC Comics has ever undertaken. Fans wondered if the movie could end up rivaling The Avengers and the billion dollar take the first movie had. Delivering us Ben Affleck after all of this hype is consistent to current practice at DC Comics. It is very reminiscent of how the 3D covers were hyped earlier this year and then we were told that there were not going to be enough to equate to supply and demand. In the end, we have a limited number of happy collectors and Ben Affleck as Batman.

Research

I would have expected DC Comics and Warner Bros. to consider all of the past superhero movies made over the years while casting for the Man of Steel sequel. I would have expected them to see how certain roles were cast and how those castings impacted the market. I would have expected them to know what everyone else in the comic book industry knows – Affleck was in Daredevil and the movie is one of the worst superhero movies in the last thirty years.

Now, DC Comics has passed the blame for the lack of 3D Villain Month covers onto the printer by stating that there were not enough materials for the job. Sounds like a lack of research to me. At least they are consistent with not doing the proper research. In the end, we don’t have enough 3D Villain Month covers and Ben Affleck as Batman.

Reception

Yes, there are some running to the side of DC Comics in the “Ben Affleck as Batman” debate raging across the world, but the general consensus I saw across the comic book industry is shock and outrage among the DC Comics/Batman fans and elation among those who do not like the company. This is the same consensus which came out when the Villain Month allocation was announced. Consistency!

Don’t Get Me Wrong

I do not believe Ben Affleck as a bad actor. Granted, he was in Daredevil, Gigli, Armageddon, and Jersey Girl, but he has also given great performances and given us some memorable characters. At the same time, I still see DC Comics winning in market share and dollar share in the industry during the September War. Where the consistency comes into play is that DC Comics could have done so much better if certain steps were taken. DC Comics continues to settle for “on the mountain” instead of “the top of the mountain.”  I look forward to more decisions like this because I have already been prepping my “Image Bumps DC Comics Out of Top 2 in Market Share” article to come out sometime in the future. In the end, we have a poor delivery on Villain Month and Ben Affleck as Batman.

TV Shows Based on Comic Books: How Many is Too Many?

How much room does the TV market have for TV shows based on comic books? More TV shows based on comics books are slated for the next few years, but should we be worried right now about market inundation? Can the public support a high number of TV show based on comic books? For this article, we are going to look primetime TV, and not afternoon animated shows as those have been on the market for decades.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead

On and Coming Soon

Let’s take a look at the current, and upcoming TV shows based on comic books. We have Season 4 of The Walking Dead and Season 2 of Arrow. Within weeks, we will have the premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and have told about the strong possibilities of Thief of Thieves and Flash.

When

Don’t worry about immediate inundation as it takes a year or two to get a new TV show off the ground. It could be a few years until the comic book market has a firm presence in the primetime TV market. There could come a day when we look to television and realize the market is saturated with TV shows based on comic books and that the market could be ready to burst. I just don’t see that happening in the next year or two.

Other Markets

Even though reality TV has passed its prime, there are still very many on TV. The same could be said for contestant shows such as American Idol and AGT. While these shows might not be pulling the numbers they once did, they are still strong. Essentially, even if the comic book-based market ballooned, it might still hold strength for a long time.

The Transition

I remember when I worked for a few sites analyzing the television market and realized that whenever the market is in a state of flux (between one type of dominant show and another), game shows would flood the market. Note the high number of them right now. I see the network execs just waiting for TV shows based on comic books to take off.

Diversification Can Save

Comic books might be superhero-heavy, but the market is still diversified in other areas. As long as the TV shows based on comics show diversification, the market should stay strong. If we see too many TV shows based on comic books take on a superhero theme, the market could go down quick. We can still have our heroes, but those with super powers could drag the market down. Rick and his crew from The Walking Dead and Oliver Queen from Arrow were strong starters, but we cannot have too many men running around in tights if we want the market to stay strong. As long as the diversity is kept, we could realistically have market dominance.

When Could this Happen?

As I stated before, it takes about a year to two to get most TV shows through production. With all of the networks tripping over each other to get comic book-based TV shows, we might not find an issue until around 2015/16 TV season. As someone who loves the comic book medium, I am looking forward to seeing how the networks deal with TV shows based on comic book and hope they don’t screw it up.

Our Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 Review

If you are looking for a Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review, you came to the right place. So, I spent a few hours last night playing Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2, and I have to say that the new season of the game is living up to most of my hopes and expectations, but falls short in a few areas.

The WonderWorldComics Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review is out!

The WonderWorldComics Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review is out!

The Music

Odd that I would start out with talking about the music during my Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review, but I have to. Music needs to set the music for a game or an adventure; the new music does that. While listening to the new music, I get brief thoughts of the original Superman movie, Luke standing on the hill looking at the twin suns, Elliot and E.T. flying past the moon, the closing credits of Indiana Jones, the moments before a James Bond action sequence, and points of dread I a Jaws movie. The hints in the music are perfect and make me want to play the new levels.

New Progression System

I really like the way allows you to work towards two goals at one time. That helps out and prevents you from having to redo the same level over and over again. At the same time, the constant bonus awards pushes you to go further. To this point, I have unlocked five of the stages in the chapter and seen only goals which are not too time consuming or difficult. Since there are many difficult things which need to be done for full completion of a chapter, it is good that the smaller goals are easier.

The New Levels

The new levels hold a challenge, but they are easier than I was hoping they would be – even on Challenge Mode. When you first start out a new level, you compete it at normal level. To accomplish one of the main goals for the chapter, you have to go back and finish the level in Challenge Mode. I like this new addition, but so far the levels are still a little too easy for me (Level 190 with most of my characters at level 12).

The New Bosses

I am so-so on the new bosses. The top level bosses were all used in the first season and third-string characters such as Sugar Man had to be brought out. While it is interesting to see them being used, it feels like the creators were forced to come up short in this area. The fact that Sugar Man is about as difficult as Baron Zemo , this strikes me as odd. If there were great bosses left over from the first string, this part of my Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review would have been better.

Rewards

Another high point in this Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review, is the rewards. I spoke already about the constant rewards, but having the subsections (such as Heroic Battles) allows for more types of rewards and more rewards. I cannot be upset with more awards. Getting new costumes for completion is awesome.

Overall Playability

For me, this section of the Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review is positive, but it might be a negative for newer players. Since I have been playing for over a year, I have most of the characters available in the game. Completing side missions is easy since I have most of the needed characters. Someone who is new would not and would take a much longer time to complete each level, stage, or chapter.

Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 Review Rating?

Overall, for my Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review, I would have to give the game an 8 out of 10. If there were better bosses left over for the second season, if it was not so lengthy for newer players, and the new bosses were not ridiculously strong for who they were – my Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 review would have probably peaked out.

To read up about most of the changes, check out the Marvel Avengers Alliance app page on Facebook.

My Wishlist for The CW DC Universe Interlocking Shows

With The CW talking about a block of interlocking DC Universe TV shows, starting with Arrow, and then potentially Flash, what other shows would be good for the network? These are my personal favorites which I think would fit the network perfectly.

Justice League Dark #22 is my Pick of the Week!

Justice League Dark #22 is my Pick of the Week!

Suicide Squad

The idea of having a team of criminals working for the government to clean up problems is perfect for TV. Now I am not sure if a character such as King Shark would translate well to TV, but Electrocutioner, Plastique, Cheetah, Deadshot, El Diablo, and many others definitely would. Of course, this would be a perfect opportunity to bring Harley Quinn back to TV as long as she was portrayed better than on Birds of Prey. No Captain Boomerang.

Justice League Dark

Justice League Dark is perfect for The CW since the network has shows which explore the paranormal and horror. Just think about how fit Constantine is fit for TV. Of course, they could bring in Deadman, Madame Zanadu, Zatana, and the rest of the team. Frankenstein might be a stretch, but not when you look at how the network has worked with vampires and werewolves over the years. Of course, this would probably kill the idea of a JLD movie, but I would much rather have a good TV series than a movie anyways.

Wonder Woman

I want to see this curse lifted. I am pushing for a Wonder Woman show. Make the next attempt stick.

The Phantom Stranger

Remember, this is my wish list. You could have the Phantom Stranger helping out new people in danger each week like he did in his original comic. The suggestion would be to not have him be Judas Iscariot on the show. Keep his past a mystery. Too many religious people could get up in arms, and I really don’t like writing about crazed religious people.

Gotham

There has been a rumor batted around about a show which follows the rogues in Gotham. Batman would appear here and there in blurs, but not be the main character of the show. The series would follow the wars of the different gangs. I love the idea. Make it happen The CW.

Katana

Why would I love to see a Katana show on The CW? The same reason I like seeing Katana issues come out every month. DC Comics is trying to make Katana into an important character. They are failing miserably. Sometimes I like to see DC Comics fall down and get humbled. A Katana TV series on The CW would be another instance for me to chuckle.

There you have it my friends. My wish list for the interconnecting shows I want to see come to The CW to fill out the DC Universe block.

Thoughts on New Flash TV Series on The CW

So The CW is looking at the possibility of having a  new Flash TV series. Barry Allen is going to be introduced this season on Arrow, and will gain his own spin-off if everything goes right. What are my thoughts on a new Flash TV series? [More about that here]

A new Flash TV series? Ok.

A new Flash TV series? Ok.

Haven’t We Done This Before?

Ok, there has been a Flash TV series before, but it should not deter creators from having a new one. I have to admit that I liked the original Flash TV series. There have been multiple Superman shows over the years, but the fact has not prevented future shows from doing well. There have been multiple Batman animated series, but we welcome each new one with open arms. Well, er…not Beware the Batman. Ok, there can be exceptions.

The Greatest Challenge for a New Flash TV Series

I see the greatest challenge in a new Flash TV series is the introduction of his rogue’s gallery. While I think Barry Allen’s Flash is a great character, most of the rogues in his gallery are over-the-top when it comes to shtick. The casual viewer might look at characters such as Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang, and the Weather Wizard and laugh. Of course, a character like Reverse Flash would be awesome for the show, but there can’t simply be one villain.

Second Greatest Challenge for New Flash TV Series

The blur when The Flash is moving quickly is going to be difficult to pull off. Of course this is something easy to do with technology, but pulling it off to where it looks good will be a challenge. If it looks good on the new Flash TV series, it will pay off many times over.

Third Greatest Challenge for the New Flash TV Series

Dominance. Another challenge of a new Flash TV series is going to be dominance of Arrow. There are more fans of The Flash than of the Green Arrow. While The CW is going to want a hit with a new Flash TV series, they don’t want to drown out their other shows. It will be interesting to see how the network deals with these issues.

Flash on Arrow = Jumping the Shark

Should we officially state that Warner Bros. has confirmed that Arrow will jump the shark this year with the introduction of Barry Allen? If you have been listening to what the creators of Arrow have been saying since before the show officially went on the air, you might be concerned with the introduction of Barry Allen and the Flash in the next season of Arrow.

Arrow on The CW

Arrow on The CW

What was Said

Before the first episode of Arrow aired, Marc Guggenheim, the show’s executive producer, told Blastr that he was not interested in having any of the other major characters from the DC Universe on the show. He explained how his vision was to have a show without super powers, the paranormal, or monsters.

Enter Barry Allen and Flash

Yesterday, HitFix did a live blog of a presentation by The CW’s president Mark Pedowitz about the upcoming season and some of the shows coming out. One of the things he discussed was how The CW plans on having some DC Comics shows in a shared universe. Arrow was the first step, but there will be many more. The next step is that they are going to introduce Barry Allen on Arrow,  give his backstory and have him acquire his powers on the show. So we will see Flash on Arrow. If all goes right, there will be a Flash TV series on The CW shortly.

Jumping the Shark

Typically, when people think about a show jumping the shark, they think about a moment in which a show spiraled out of control and could not be recovered. A variant view is when a show’s creator has to veer so much from the original plan for a show that the show becomes morphed into something which was never intended. Due to the Guggenheim comments, we realize that the introduction of a super power, and the introduction of a main DC Universe character, is a shark jump for Arrow. One season down and the series is already off the intended track.

Don’t Expect All Comics Characters To Translate Well to Film

There are just some characters which do not translate well from the printed pages of comics to the screen. Marvel is entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2, DC Comics is upping movie production, the smaller companies are optioning titles right and left, and more comic book-based TV shows are hitting the small screen. Don’t always expect the characters to look the way you want.

Let’s Look at an Example

One of the biggest complaints I heard about Spider-Man 3 was how horrible Venom looked. The symbiote would not translate correctly to film with current technology, and probably will not for many years. The ever-changing oil slick which surrounds whoever body Venom is controlling would always look half-baked in a movie. Thing and almost all of the non-human characters in Green Lantern also fall into this category.

Super-Sizing

While I liked Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut in the X-Men movie series, there was something missing. He looked too small when compared to how the character is portrayed in comics. Inhuman sizes are also near impossible to pull off in movies. I doubt we will ever see the character in a movie, but Blob from the X-Men would also be next to impossible to pull off.

The Demonic

Are you upset with how Ghost Rider looked on film? How do you think Blackheart would look? Do you think Hollywood could pull off a character such as Swamp Thing and really make him look good? Of course not. Well, at least with modern technology.

Why is This?

Creatures, inhumanly-sized humans, and fantastical characters are easier to draw than they are to translate into film. Granted, we have seen many horrible renditions in comics of some of the aforementioned characters, but we have also seen many fantastic renditions. We cannot expect Hollywood to be able to do everything that comic book creators can do with pencils, ink, and color. Technology has come a long way since Roger Corman’s attempt at the Fantastic Four. Maybe in ten to 15 years things will be different.

SDCC Marvel Avengers Alliance Announcements – Thoughts

Those of us who play Marvel Avengers Alliance on Facebook, and through other means, had some great announcements to find out about from San Diego Comic-Con International. While I was hoping there would be a definitive date for the release of Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2, I am happy with many of the other announcements made. Here are my thoughts.

130px-Alternate_Cyclops_Marvel.com_ArtChapter Prizes

One of the big changes announced about Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 is the fact that variant costumes will now be the ultimate prize in each chapter. Instead of getting a golden weapon, such as in the first season of the game, we will automatically win costumes, so we can save our command points up for a change. New costumes officially slotted so far are Iron Fist’s Heroic Age costume at the end of Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 Chapter 1 and Uncanny Cyclops at the end of Chapter 2.

Special Op 12

Even though we are still in the middle of Special Op 11, a little information was given about Special Op 12. It will be entitled Dark Reign and Ares will be the reward hero. I was a little worried that heroes would no longer be the ultimate reward in a Special Op mission, but that worry has been put to rest.

1016873_518861354852608_1004538816_nPvP Season 10

Soon, we are going to be able to create offensive and defensive teams for PvP. I am hoping this will be a part of PvP Season 10, but I have not received confirmation as of this writing. What this means to me is that we will be able to create two PvP teams. One for when we are playing, and one for when players are going against us. I am already coming up with some defensive ideas.

Bishop, who was officially announced this weekend, will be the character awarded to the top players in Marvel Avengers Alliance PvP Season 10.

New Playable Characters

Dr. Voodoo, Moon Knight, and Squirrel Girl will all be characters offered in the store very soon. I am excited by all three of these characters, but Squirrel Girl takes the damn cake.

Electra will be the next Lock Box character, so I am sure there is going to be some type of benefit going along with teaming her with Daredevil.

Baddies

The Circle of 8 will apparently be the main baddies of Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2. We all know that secondary and lower characters are going to be introduced. Hopefully they will be as fun to play against as the main villains from Season 1. Also, Thanos will play a part in an upcoming Special Ops mission entitled “Infinity.” So much to look forward to.

Was Warner Bros. Rumor Filtering With Flash and Justice League Movie Announcement?

On Saturday, word spread like wildfire about a Flash movie and a Justice League movie. This began hours before the Warner Bros. panel at San Diego Comic-Con which eventually released word about the upcoming Batman-Superman movie. DC Comics and Warner Bros. did not end up speaking about movies about the fastest man or the superhero team. While nobody knows exactly what happened at this point, I do have a series possible theories.

Will we ever see a Justice League movie?

Will we ever see a Justice League movie?

What is Rumor Filtering?

There is an upper management tool called rumor filtering. Occasionally, upper management at a company will deliberately start a rumor to see how fast it spreads, determine who spread the rumors, and to gauge some feedback on the rumor. Learning how fast the rumor spreads helps to understand the lines of communication in a company. Determining who spread a rumor can weed out top employees who do not deserve the trust of upper management. If the reaction to the rumor is not as bad as possibly thought, it might be worth making some changes (such as cut-backs, reorganized labor forces, or other things people might look at negatively).

How Could Rumor Filtering Work for Warner Bros.: Communication Channels

It is possible that Warner Bros. and DC Comics might have wanted to see how fast they could get into the papers and online journals with a “major announcement.” If done hours before their panel, they could make sure word travelled quickly enough to be spread within an hour or two.

How would this benefit them? A few hours after the Warner Bros. panel, Marvel took the floor with their movie panel. DC Comics would want to make sure everyone was buzzing about DC Comics and their movies before Marvel took the stage. The “releases” about the Flash and Justice League movies could have been a way to make sure the Batman-Superman movie would be the buzz of the Internet before the Marvel panel got off the ground.

How Could Rumor Filtering Work for Warner Bros.: Weeding

It is possible that Warner Bros. deliberately gave this false information to a website, or to a few reporters, in an attempt to see if they could hold a secret. It could also have been done to discredit a certain website or sites. DC Comics has been dealing with a ton of leaks over the last eight months. The company looks negatively on many sites which publish those leaks.

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that Site A was given the fake Flash and Justice League movie information. Site A publishes the information as fact and is picked up, with a backlink to the original story, by Sites B – ZZZ. Hundreds, if not thousands, of readers will know within hours that the original story was wrong. Many of those readers might not trust the original site reporting the story.

How Could Rumor Filtering Work for Warner Bros.: Gauge Response

Most of the articles which reported the Flash and Justice League movies as fact had comment sections. Up until the last moments before the Warner Bros. panel, the company had the opportunity to see the comments and enter forums around the Internet. Maybe the Flash and Justice League movie information got out to see what people thought. Maybe those movies are in the works and Warner Bros. needed to know if their panel this weekend was the best time to introduce the information.

How Could Rumor Filtering Work for Warner Bros.: Hide the Truth

One other way rumor filtering might have worked for Warner Bros. this weekend was to hide the truth. By getting everyone talking about Flash and Justice League movies, maybe they would have the chance to sneak in the Batman-Superman movie announcement without an issue. Maybe the shock value would be higher. Maybe, ten years from now, someone at Warner Bros. or DC Comics will write a memoir and talk about what happened with the Flash and Justice League movie announcements.

Avengers: Age of Ultron – Battling Your Negative Notions NOW

Just hours after DC Comics officially announced the Batman-Superman movie, Marvel fired back with Avengers: Age of Ultron. I have already heard some of the criticism, and am preparing myself to hear even more. Before we go jumping down Marvel’s throat about Avengers: Age of Ultron, there are some issues we need to consider. Lets take a look at some of the potential arguments.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Age of Utron is Too New

Where is there a rule written which states that Marvel has to incorporate older stories into the movies? Yes, Loki was the first villain in the Avengers comics, and the first villain in the movies, but that does not mean that Marvel has to follow suit with the next storyline in the comics. While the Space Phantom story from Avengers #2 would be an interesting story to tell, Age of Ultron is a much stronger story.

But, We Don’t Have a Full Enough Cast for Avengers: Age of Ultron

How long should Marvel wait to make Avengers: Age of Ultron? The X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four are all movie properties owned by other companies. If Marvel were to wait to make this movie to ensure all of the players from the comic are involved, Avengers: Age of Ultron might not be made for a decade, if at all.

Also, as Marvel has proven with the Phase 1 movies, they do not have to follow the comics exactly (or barely even loosely) to make blockbusters. The Avengers was one of the top grossing movies of all time. They can pull this movie off without Wolverine, Spider-Man, or Reed.

But, What About Hank Pym?

Here is a bit of an odd one. If Hank Pym is going to be the creator of Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it means he will be launched in the Marvel cinematic universe before his own movie. Avengers: Age of Ultron is slated for May of 2015, and Ant-Man is slated for November 2015. There is nothing wrong with introducing him in an Avengers movie before his own. In fact, this will help to introduce him to a wider audience before he has his own movie. Please have Wasp, Marvel. Please have Wasp.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Alienates Older Fans

How can anyone say Avengers: Age of Ultron alienates older fans? None of the Marvel movies have followed the original comics exactly. If anything, they have followed the Ultimate Universe closer. Each movie has had enough shout outs to the way “things used to be” to keep older fans and collectors happy. None of the Marvel movies in Phase 1 were flops, and Avengers: Age of Ultron is sure to follow the same formulas used thus far.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is Only to Sell the Newer Comics

The hell it is. The main goals of Avengers: Age of Ultron would be to continue the Marvel/Disney dominance of the comic-book based media market, continue the superhero movie legacy Marvel has created, and to make the other comic book publishing companies stand further back in line. Selling comics is an impact, but not necessarily a goal of the movie franchises Marvel is running with right now in much the same way that selling toys and other merchandise is an impact. Yes, this announcement will get more people in the stores picking up Age of Ultron – but that is not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is to keep Marvel on top of the comic book industry for many years to come.

What Impact Will This Have on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline?

Who says that there has to be enough time travel in Avengers: Age of Ultron to disrupt the space-time continuum? Marvel might even know a way to pull off the story without having time travel at all. The movie title might simply be a way to indicate that the Avengers will be battling Ultron. We will not have any clue as to how this will all play out until closer to the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, or we might have to wait until the first movie or two passes after the next Avengers movie. Only time, and Marvel, will tell.

Batman-Superman Movie: My Thoughts

Simply put, the upcoming Batman-Superman movie is the biggest announcement up to this point at San Diego Comic-Con International. With the movie official going into production next year, this is going to be the movie we will be talking about for the next few years.

Batman-Vs-Superman-1-TPTIVIRZ0S-1024x768Busting Other’s Bubbles

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Walking Dead, and some other stories were supposed to be the biggest talk of the town. DC Comics came to bat (pardon the pun) and knocked it out of the park. How can other companies compete? Granted, many of us were hoping for a Justice League movie announcement, but we will definitely take the Batman-Superman movie as a second place prize.

Comeback?

How will Marvel, Image, IDW Publishing, and the other publishing companies come back from this? How will they save face? How will they make sure DC Comics does not pull off a major coup at San Diego Comic-Con International and be the belle of the ball with the Batman-Superman movie announcement? I don’t think the other companies have much of a chance of pulling an 11th hour lead this year.

Batman-Superman Movie is a Delivery

Fans have wanted a Batman-Superman movie for years. The recent comic crossover reminded fans about how cool it would be (as long as you like both characters) for the two characters to make a movie together. Now, it will apparently become a reality.

How This Hurts Me

The idea of the Batman-Superman movie hurts me. I never want to miss a Batman movie, but I still hate Superman. I have no choice. I will have to go. It also hurts to think about how I am going to report on criticism about whoever DC Comics lines up to play Batman next. You know it will happen. You know. Until then, let’s celebrate the idea of the Batman-Superman movie.

No Major Emmy Nod for The Walking Dead? Censored

You are telling me that The Walking Dead did not get any of the top Emmy nominations? You have to be [Censored] kidding me? This was the strongest season yet, with some of the best performances the show has seen up to this point and it can’t get a single major Emmy nomination? Instead, they give a TV show nomination to a show which not even [Censored] on TV?

This content is censored.

Fans of The Walking Dead should be outraged that the show was overlooked in all of the major categories. Laurie Holden was able to get me interested as Andrea as a character this season and she can’t get [Censored]? David Morrissey struck terror in everyone as The Governor and he can’t get a [Censored] Emmy nod? Daryl is one of the pinnacle characters on TV right now, but Norman Reedus can’t get the respect he [Censored] deserves from the people who voted on the Emmys? It is the most talked about show on TV and a Netflix show gets a nomination? What the [Censored] are the Emmy people thinking?

The Walking Dead Season 4: More From Comics

Last night, TV Guide posted an interview about The Walking Dead Season 4 with comic creator Robert Kirkman and new showrunner Scott Gimple. One interesting item to pull from this interview (which you are can read here) about The Walking Dead Season 4 is how more scenes and scenarios are pulled directly from the comic. I see this as an interesting move which will help the franchise as a whole.

The Walking Dead

Should there be cannibals on The Walking Dead?

Scenes from the Comics: Refocus Fans

I have heard some fans talking during the third season about how they were discouraged that there was not more pulled from the comics during the season. By pulling more from the comics during The Walking Dead Season 4, Kirkman, Gimple, and the other creators will be able to rope these potentially wayward fans of the comic back into having a deeper interest in the TV series.

Scenes from the Comics: More Readers

If word can filter out strong enough about how The Walking Dead Season 4 will be pulled more from the comics, more readers will pick up the old trades and omnibuses. Since the beginning of The Walking Dead, I have been amazed by how many people who have never read comics want to read the comic to see particular scenes before they play out on TV.

Fans who have not done so at this point, are sure to hit their local comic shop or bookstore to pick up some copies of issues they have missed. I would not be surprised to see a few of the trades hit the Diamond Top 20 trades later this year as fans try to see what happened after the final battle with Woodbury. They will want to know what they have yet to see on The Walking Dead Season 4.

The Sidekick at Comic-Con International: Learn About it Now

The Sidekick is a short film which will be debut at Comic-Con International. I have seen the trailer (you can see it here), and if the trailer is any indication, the short film will quickly become a cult classic in the superhero genre.

The Sidekick will premiere at Comic-Con International

The Sidekick will premiere at Comic-Con International

The Sidekick: The Plot

The Sidekick short film follows an out-of-work superhero sidekick. The trailer shows how the main character and other sidekicks are shunned by society and struggle to find their place.

Who is in The Sidekick?

The short film stars Rob Benedict from Supernatural, Ron Livingston from Office Space, Jordan Peele, Jason Ritter, and Lizzy Caplan from Cloverfield and Hot Tub Time Machine.

Why You Should Know About The Sidekick

The trailer looks hilarious and there is very little out about the short film right now. Once The Sidekick debuts at Comic-Con International, there is a good chance that the comic book world will go crazy for it. Be the first one on the block to know about this movie before you become the last.

When Can You See The Sidekick?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Sidekick will be shown at 3:00pm at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront’s Indigo Ballroom. The stars and creators of the short film will be on hand to discuss it and answer any questions. If I were heading to Comic-Con International this year, it would be one of the stops on my list.

Summer Glau on Arrow: More Buzz Than Sting

One of the hottest items of geeky news today is about Summer Glau on Arrow. The actress is going to be taking a reoccurring role on the show on The CW. While I am happy an actress I like has received work, I can’t get excited about Summer Glau on Arrow.

Summer Glau on Arrow: More Buzz than Sting

Summer Glau on Arrow: The Role

The actress will portray Isabel Rochev, Vice President of Acquisitions of Stellmoor International. The company she works for will push to take over Oliver Queen’s company. To this point, I have not seen confirmation as to how many times she will appear, but I do see a slight bump coming to at least her first episode on the series.

Summer Glau on Arrow Won’t Help Much

I cannot see Arrow receiving a significant bump from Summer Glau as the show is still on The CW. Arrow was The CW’s best show during the 2012-2013 season but it still only placed in at #130 on the overall list of shows during the season. Shows such as 1600 Penn, 666 Park Avenue, and Malibu Country were all ranked higher than Arrow last season and were cancelled without backlash or surprise. The final episode of the season only had 2.77 million viewers which was down significantly from the 4.14 million people which saw the premiere.

Summer Glau on Arrow: Sorry Summer

I first noticed Summer Glau on The 4400 which was a show my wife and I watched religiously. I later became a Firefly fan when a friend loaned me the box set. As I stated, I am happy she was able to find work, but is not going to be a blockbuster for her.

Why the Buzz Over Summer Glau on Arrow?

If Arrow is an overlookable show, why is there such a buzz over Summer Glau on Arrow? First off, Comic-Con International is only days away and the media companies want to jump on any news right now while we enter the “geek/nerd holiday season.” Oh, wait…there is only one real reason. Don’t believe the buzz as the actress and a handful of appearances will not save the show.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and San Diego Comic-Con International

Bar none, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs to be the talk of the town come San Diego Comic-Con International. With the show launching within months on ABC, the network and Marvel need to make sure that you hear about the show at every turn.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. does have a cool logo

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. does have a cool logo

Other Announcements

Of course, there will be a myriad of other announcements made at San Diego Comic-Con International. Companies will be announcing movies, different shows, and new toys and video games will be prepped for a holiday release. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs to be the center attraction to ensure that people are hungry for the new show.

In Marvel’s Favor

There are a few aspects in Marvel’s favor. First off, The Walking Dead does not come out until October, so Image is not as pressed to make a major impact. Secondly, the rumors have been flying around the Internet as to who it is in the trailers and which characters might be seen on the show. Finally, ABC has been pushing hard to make sure that ABC fans see as much as possible of Clark Gregg and the other stars of the show. The network has built a frenzy which now needs to be cashed in upon. Marvel is able to strike while the iron is hot.

Time

There have been many months since the official announcement of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so the company has had a long time to prep for San Diego Comic-Con International. If you think that the publishing companies start thinking about San Diego Comic-Con International within the last few weeks before the convention, you are wrong. They start planning a year in advance or more. I would not be going out on a limb by saying that Marvel was probably prepping announcements for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International before officially announcing Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The ball is in Marvel’s court when it comes to the announcement of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at San Diego Comic-Con International. I can’t wait to see what announcements they make, and how those announcements make the other publishers squirm.

World War Z: John Vincent’s Review

28 Days Later, part James Bond, and part Dawn of the Dead, Brad Pitt’s World War Z is an action packed pseudo zombie flick that ultimately trades big set pieces for scares.  There be mild spoilers ahead….

Brad Pitt's World War Z

Brad Pitt’s World War Z

The movie wastes no time getting started, as Pitt and his onscreen family – along with everyone else in Philly – are soon running for their lives as hordes of people begin attacking their fellow citizens, apparently after getting bitten by other infected people.  Pitt – who’s character used to be some sort of UN hot shot investigator – is soon rescued by his UN pals and sent right back out to see if he can find out what really is going on.  The rest of the film features him jet setting into various exotic areas of the world looking for clues.

During all of this, World War Z features what is easily the biggest set pieces of oncoming zombie Apocalypse ever filmed.  At least 3 big scenes featuring hundreds (maybe thousands) of extras, huge locations, and massive amounts of excellent CG all make for a pleasing summer popcorn chomper of a thrill ride.  Pitt is excellent, although it’s a little hard to believe that he loves his onscreen wife, or that he even knows her name as they has less then zero chemistry.  And of course Pitt’s fame doesn’t lend itself to scares – kinda like watching Frank Sinatra in zombie flick – seriously, what the hell is going to happen to him?

But the biggest risk taken in the film – its unique take of zombies – is what will likely turn off many “purist” zombie fans.  At first, the “zekes” as they’re called seem to be 28 Days Later styled rage victims – nothing more and nothing less.  But as the film goes on, it appears to tell us that no, the rage victims die, then turn in to real old fashioned zombies, albeit ones that can move very fast, just like the ragers.  It is never made clear if the rage virus kills then reanimates the victims, or if they remain live infected “ragers” until made dead… at which point they raise up as undead rage zombies.  It’s never discussed in the film and there’s no experimentation done on the zombies.  Some “zombies” are clearly called undead, yet it is never really made clear that they are in fact dead or not.

In some ways it doesn’t matter – there’s a bunch of zombie-ish people who Brad Pitt has to destroy, good enough.  There’s certainly enough action that one can overlook it.  But like I am Legend, this sort of hodgepodge shatter gun approach to what exactly the monsters are tends to take away from the real terror achieved in Romero’s flicks, or in Zack Snyder’s remake of Dawn of the Dead.  An audience wants to known what the hell it is that the heroes are fighting, and in Z, we’re never really quite sure.  We don’t know if they’re scared of fire, if they want brains, or when (or if) they’ll die if left alone.  The only thing we know for sure is that they move crazy fast and love to bite [Censored].

The film’s size and scope seems to overwhelm director Marc Forster from time to time as he simply walks by easy moments of drama – like when Pitt leaves his family and a kid they had rescued earlier.  It happens all too easily.  Everyone seems cut from the same, 2 dimensional cloth in the film. No one really seems truly scared and there’s little actual heroism or cowardice shown.  The massive “zombies waterfall” attacks are actually pretty damn cool, but can’t touch a hair on the head of The Walking Dead for actual emotional power.  Even with the awesome mass zombie attack scenes (and make no mistake, they are awesome), I never really got the sense that the world was dying.  No massive empty city street shots (something which did give I Am Legend some grit) as seen in 28 Days Later or Day of the Dead.  No one who matters to Pitt dying and coming back as a zeke, no sense that New York or London is really gone.  No subtly other then what Pitt’s performance brings.

And people do things that would never happen in real life – there’s much reference to Pitt’s family being taken off of the ship they’re staying on, but why for the love of God would the military waste gas flying civvies back to the mainland?  Why would they risk the infection?  Now if this movie lined up Pitt’s family along a wall and shot them, then tossed them overboard, I might believe it.  As it was, Forster leaves too many nuggets of drama un-mined and too many, “Nope – don’t buy it” moments.  Of course, the many script and production problems this film was rumored to have probably have something to do with this clunkiness, but even so some basic things were ignored that didn’t have to be.

Not a bad flick – in many ways it’s a super fun action movie – but just as an audience would never really fear for James Bond, World War Z makes it all but impossible to really be scared for Pitt, or anyone else.  Part of that is its near bloodless approach.  Seriously, I’d guess then less then a pint of fake blood was used.  I mean the film works without gore, but it is a zombie movie right?  Where’s the dang guts?  And when a TV show has oodles more gore then a $200 million movie about zombies, it’s a little weird.  Even when a character gets a hand cuts off there’s nary a drop.  Part of why zombie movies have so much gore is to prove to the audience that the dead can rise – which of course is a major problem with this film – are the victims really undead or not?   I have no idea why anyone would rate this film PG-13.  In the end, I’d guess I would call it a zombie movie, but WWZ stretches that definition about as far as it can.  So watch it for fun, but not for fear.

BOTTOM LINE:  3.5 I guess it’s a movie about zombies out of 5″

Compound Fracture and the Fears it Exploits

Since Tyler Mane is coming to out Detroit area comic book store tomorrow, I wanted to take a moment to talk about Compound Fracture and the fears which the movie will touch upon. It looks like an interesting movie based on a concept which fits into the classic horror market.

Compound Fracture

Compound Fracture

The Basis of Compound Fracture

Tyler Mane will star as Michael Wolffsen in the 2013 movie Compound Fracture. The character takes his family to visit his estranged and eccentric father (played by Muse Watson) who is building an unassailable compound to calm his on-setting dementia. As the film progresses, the stars will learn of a ghost named William (played by Derek Mears) which haunts the compound as carnage of the characters begins. Escaping the compound will become as much of a menace as the spirit. To find out more about Compound Fracture, please follow this link to the movie’s official website.

You can learn more about Compound Fracture by following this link.

Fitting into Horror Market

Well before I began writing articles and other types of posts about comics, I wrote about the history and symbolism of the horror genre. Compound Fracture fits right in with particular classic trends in the horror genre which I have spent many years studying. By understanding the classic styles, and the fears horror films touch upon, you can have a greater understanding of a horror film.

First off, the sins of the father/ancestors haunting the son/descendants is a horror storytelling tool made popular in gothic storytelling. Dunsany, Poe, Lovecraft, and Bierce all used this type of story to progress old superstitions and religious fears that our precursors might have cursed us with their evil deeds. One classic story using this storytelling tool would be The Case of Charles Dexter Ward by H.P. Lovecraft which was made into the Roger Corman movie entitled The Haunted Palace starring Vincent Price. I am interested to see how it plays out in Compound Fracture.

The Father’s compound in Compound Fracture touches upon the fears of separatism and meeting up with separatists and their particular brands of insanity. Classic horror movies such as Psycho, Deliverance, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre touched upon these types of fears. More modern movies such as House of 1000 Corpses and the Hatchet movie series also delve into these classic fears.

Insanity is also a major part of the Compound Fracture story. Another gothic storytelling tool touches upon what we might do if we were to lose control or what others might do if they were to lose control. A large majority of the works of Poe teach us lessons about how we should keep ourselves from going over the edge. It will be fun to see the lessons discussed and inferred in Compound Fracture.

Ghosts and the paranormal continue to be hot right now, but ghost stories were among the first horrific stories created hundreds (if not thousands) of years ago to scare children into bed or to keep the average peasant in line and away from certain buildings or plots of land. In the modern day, movies such as those in the Paranormal Activity line and all of the paranormal investigation shows on TV help to keep ghosts as current and important in modern horror and as a base for movies like Compound Fracture.

The Essence and the Goal of Horror

The essence of horror is taking a collective fear held by many (if not all) people and exploiting it. The goal is to bring the fear out into the open and address it in the community format of entertainment so that we can have a release which might help us to overcome out fears as a society. Sometimes, those fears use fantastic and fanciful tools such as zombies and constructs (like Frankenstein’s monster) to take our exploration of fear to an extreme that the mind will realize is fictitious. At other times, real fears such as separatism, insanity, and death will be used to trick the mind because separatism, insanity, and death (as in the Compound Fracture movie) are aspects of the world we live in.

Marvel Needs Joss Whedon to Stay Relevant

Have you noticed how often Joss Whedon is in the spotlight these days? Do you notice that entertainment sites and entertainment shows have been revolving so many of their reports around him, or at least quoting him whenever possible? There is a reason for that.

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon

Robert Downey Jr. Rumors

Most of the news sources which were running the now-over Robert Downey Jr. rumors were quoting Joss Whedon. They would ask the director/producer about how the actor might not come back or about how he might be asking for more money for his costars or about how he might have tension with this star or that. Great pains were taken to keep Joss Whedon relevant.

Much Ado About Something

Did you know that Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing debuts this weekend? The movie has been done for well over a year, but is just hitting theaters now. Why would they want to have the movie hit this weekend in theaters? Could it be to take a small bite out of Man of Steel and get entertainment shows, reporters, and bloggers talking about Joss Whedon when they would have been talking about Man of Steel? If you have been following Much Ado About Nothing, you already know that Clark Gregg plays an important role in the movie. This leads to my next point.

Agents of Marvel

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. begins to air within a matter of months. Marvel is banking everything on the show because it could cause the company to have a strong foothold in primetime. By keeping Joss Whedon in the limelight, Marvel can manipulate them into mentioning the upcoming show. With Clark Gregg being in Much Ado About Nothing, the entertainment company gains another chance at a push in the media.

Joss Whedon – Superstar! (To the tune of Jesus Christ Superstar)

When we talk about the Marvel movies, our minds automatically point out the superstars involved. Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson were major stars before the Phase 1 movies, but Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evens, Chris Hemsworth, Clark Gregg, and Jeremy Renner have all become bigger stars as well. Marvel needs as many huge names attached to the project and by lifting Joss Whedon to a higher level, they gain another star on the Avengers project and on S.H.I.E.L.D. They need him to stay “in the papers” to continue to have his star shine brighter.

Don’t Believe the Robert Downey Jr. Rumor Hype

I am sure that you know by now that the geek world is ecstatic with the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. would be back as Iron Man for Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. There were rumors about people wanting to back out of the project if Robert Downey Jr. was not involved, disputes over pay, and whispers about cast members who did not get along. I have a strong feeling that the hype was planned.

Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3

The Timing of the Hype

Note that all of the rumors about Robert Downey Jr. and his future as Iron man happened in the space between the release of Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel. This took some of the attention away from the new DC Comics movie and placed it on Marvel. In business, it is a smart move to get people talking about your product during times when they should be talking about your competitor’s. Corporations have planners who try to decide when the best time is to steal thunder from competitors.

The Timing of the Announcement

Also take note about the timing of the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. is back online for Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. It was just days after Man of Steel raked money in at the box office and as the movie was prepping to make another strong weekend run. Yet another time for Marvel to steel thunder from DC Comics.

Controversy Adds Character

Now that we have some controversy surrounding Robert Downey Jr., he gains a little more character away from his character. You might see him as someone who is fighting for the other actors in the Marvel franchises. You might see him as someone who can put aside differences for a project (or for money). You might see him as someone who everyone wants to work with. Either way, he gains more distinction in the role than just being the person who is in the roll. Don’t believe the spoon-fed hype.

Popping over Locke & Key Movie Announcement

I am excited by the thought of Universal bringing Locke & Key to the big screen. Dread Central has given some of the details, and they have me popping.

Locke & Key

Locke & Key

The Long Road

Those of us who have followed the Locke and Key story are happy to see the quest towards a media adaptation finally come to fruition. After a failed TV pilot, and multiple studios looking at the project, Universal is finally moving forward.

Ted Adams Producing

I love the idea of Ted Adams (CEO and Lead Publisher for IDW Publishing) being one of the producers on the film. Too many studios don’t want creators or anyone associated with the publication of a work having anything to do with a movie adaptation. This disdain is how we get Brad Pitt starring in World War Z which is a movie which uses only the name of a great zombie story. I am sure Ted Adams will make sure the movie version of Locke & Key has something for the fans which have made the storyline a success.

Anything Lovecraft

As a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft and his contemporaries, I am always excited when I hear about a project either involving his work, or influenced by his work. Well, as long as former cast members of 90210 are not involved. Locke & Key might “open the door” for more Lovecraftian movies in the future. We can only hope.

Horror Comics

One of the larger portions of my comic book collection is my horror comics collection. Anything project which could bring more attention to horror comics gets me popping again. Horror comics are often overlooked for superhero comics, but the creators of horror in comics have done much and they should not be ignored. Locke & Key might even turn new creators on and make them consider using comics to tell their stories or as a medium for their twisted art.

Should Comic Book Creators Advise on Comic Book Movies?

Should comic book creators be advisors on comic book movies? This is a question I was asked many years ago and I find that I have a different answer to this question than I once did. After reading both sides of this argument, you might have a definitive answer as well.

MAN-OF-STEEL-man-of-steel-32497930-1330-870What I Once Answered

A handful of years ago, I was asked to write about comic book creators taking an advisory role in movies about their characters. At the time, I felt that a creator would be too attached to the version he or she worked on to be able to move forward enough for a movie. I remember stating that a comic book movie needs to change a character so it will meld with the current times and the current market. Small changes would have to be made and this would alienate creators and some fans along the way. I argued that the studio had every right to do this in an attempt to make a comic book movie as mainstream as possible.

Today

After hearing what I heard about the Superman movie, Man of Steel, and reading Mark Waid’s blog post about his impressions of the movie, I thoroughly believe comic book creators should advise movie studios on comic book movies. You see, movie studios do not have a direct connection to the characters they are showing on the screen. Even if the movie is done by Warner Bros., the big wigs at the top are only looking at the botton line and not the actual characters involved. Maybe if someone like Mark had been in an advisory position, Man of Steel might not have veered so much from the traditional understandings of the character.

Someone needs to keep filmmakers grounded in their “representations” of comic book characters. The creators might have the chance of keeping new films away from being like World War Z which promises to only share a name with the book. When I go see a movie, I expect to see a representation of what the director sees in the story, but I do not expect to see the remnants of the abortion of the original story.

I Vow to Never See Man of Steel

I have spoken to many people over the weekend about Man of Steel and have found that I have to add the movie to the list of movies I refuse to see. It is not because I don’t especially care for Superman. It is because there are aspects of the movie which I do not wish to condone.

Man of Steel

Man of Steel

My Refusing to See Certain Movies

There is a short list of movies which I refuse to ever see. They are on the list for various reasons. Days of Thunder is on the list because I hate NASCAR and just about anything to do with racing. Dead Man Walking makes the list because I despise Susan Sarandon and her inability to keep her politics to herself. The same goes for any movie by Sean Penn. I have never seen Top Gun, and never will simply for the fact that there are so many people that say I “have” to see the movie. The last one is simply a personal goal.

Trying to Make this Spoiler-Free

I am going to do everything I can to keep this article spoiler-free, but there are a few aspects which I have to allude to so you understand why I refuse to see Man of Steel.

Superman Not in Man of Steel

If I was going to see Man of Steel, I would be going under the assumption that it was a Superman movie. The main character would be the suit-wearing character which everyone grew up with. Even if DC Comics had decided to insert more of the New 52 aspects of the character, I would at least be going to see a Superman movie. Instead, from everything I have heard and read about the movie, there is a character in a red suit that does not exhibit the characteristics one should have expected to see in Man of Steel.

Not Superman You Say?

Even though Superman has never been one of my personal favorites, I have to commend the creators who have worked on him over the years for establishing that Superman will do everything he can to keep human life sacred. This aspect of his character in Man of Steel is outshone by a character who will do anything to get to his target, including fighting in the middle of a city.

Displacement vs. Destruction

Another aspect which I hear is lacking in Man of Steel is Superman’s famous act of displacement. Instead of destroying an alien ship, the Superman everyone grew up with would cast the alien spacecraft out into oblivion and far from the Earth. How many times did we see Superman kick unbeatable foes off into space instead of rendering them in half?

The Moment

There is a moment in which Superman takes the opportunity to do irreparable damage to another character’s body. This is not something Superman would do. He would find a non-lethal way of dealing with the foe. He would do everything he could to end the issue without ending the person causing the issue. Making a non-lethal decision is something which makes Superman into a super man. This is not present in Man of Steel. Since the movie is about a character we have never seen before under the guise of one we are familiar with, I find I cannot willingly give DC Comics a dime of my money in support of the movie.

While it had a great opening weekend, I hope Man of Steel crashes and burns from here on out.

Man of Steel Needs to Carry All the Weight of Failures and Botches by DC

Interesting article over on Yahoo! today about how Man of Steel holds the key to the future of DC Comics movie franchises. I have to agree with the point of the article about how we should expect more superhero movies out of DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. if the new Superman movie does well. There are a few points that the article did not touch upon which should be mentioned.

Man of Steel Must Carry All Weight

We have talked about Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark project with Constantine and other members of the group, but even that might not come to fruition if Man of Steel falters. The project is the closest one to a definite on the Warner Bros. docket outside of a sequel to Man of Steel. The studio can talk all it wants about movies about the Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman, and anyone else all they want. If the Man of Steel does not shatter the box office this weekend, the execs at Marvel are going to laugh themselves to sleep.

A History of Planning

We all know about how many years DC Comics, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. have dragged their feet when it came to creating a Justice League movie or exploiting other potential movie properties other than Superman and Batman. We all know how they have planned this movie and that movie just enough to get fans to roll their eyes whenever an “announcement” comes about another movie franchise. Is it fair to rest all of this past planning on one movie? It should rest on the shoulders of the planners who could not exit the board room without a deal.

A History of Failures

The last Superman movie was horrible. Green Lantern was not much better. The “I-lift-things-up-and-put-them-down-on-my-knee” version of Bane in the last Batman movie was a disaster. If we take a look back over the past franchises, DC Entertainment has a strong history of not being able to make more than two good movies in a row. Superman 3 – whatever were all fluff as where any Batman movie which had a number higher than two attached with it. Can Man of Steel erase all of those failures and the history of discouragement?

My Hope

I have made it clear on this site and in our Detroit area comic shop that I am not a fan of Superman. I do hope, though, that Man of Steel is a resounding success. I hope that it redeems DC Comics, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. in the minds of comic book fans and of the general public. I want to see great movies in the future from DC, and if I have to push strong in support of a Superman movie in Man of Steel to get a Justice League, Justice League Dark, Wonder Woman and other movies…I will.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Rumors Hurt the Show

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rumors have been circulating for months, but I am nervous that may cause issues for some viewers. I have spoken against rumors before, but the issues are becoming more apparent with this show right now. Hopefully the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rumors will die down sometime soon.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. does have a cool logo

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rumors have to end

Basis of the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Rumors

As ABC releases more trailers and teasers for the show, the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rumors escalate. People speculate about every unannounced character on the show and every piece of technology they see in the background. Speculation points to this character or that and people become excited that speculation points to a favored character. If the speculated-about character never materializes, disappointment usually follows.

Ultimate Killer of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Rumors

Who ever said that Marvel and ABC had to pull characters directly out of the comic books? The House of Ideas can create characters for the show which may or may not make it into the comic book pages later. Marvel can stay one step ahead of the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rumors by creating characters we have never seen before with powers we have never imagined.

Remember Back

Remember back to when The Walking Dead first came out and we speculated about the characters and events we would see in the first season. Many people became upset a few episodes into the first season when they realized the show was not following the comic exactly. These people argued about how the show was not “following the script” as if the show was supposed to be an exact transference of the comic. They were wrong and I have a feeling they will with Marvel’s new show.

Worst Case Scenario

I always have to think about the worst possible cases. What happens if the big wigs at ABC get wind of Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rumors and interpret them as what all the fans collectively want? They you get too many cooks in the kitchen as the pepole commanding the ABC ship think they can give us what we want. Oh, the horrors of non-comic book people trying to give comic book people what they want.

The Walking Dead: Are the Zombies Still Important?

Someone was in the store the other day and asked if zombies were important anymore on The Walking Dead. He believed that the show had spiraled into only being about human relationships and that the walkers were no longer needed or important. I have to disagree.

The Walking Dead

Should there be cannibals on The Walking Dead?

Reason for the Walkers on The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is a zombie story because it uses zombies as a catalyst for action. In all honesty, a very similar story could have been told in Season 3 (humans vs. humans) in any type of post-apocalyptic setting. We might have seen The Governor battle Rick in much the same way in a Day-After-Tomorrow type story or in one which secluded people due to a major virus being spread.

Most Important Aspect of The Walking Dead

I have always been surprised by people who believe The Walking Dead is only a zombie story. The same people often complain that there were not enough zombies in a particular episode or season. The most important aspect of The Walking Dead is human interaction during a prolonged stressful event. Zombies are just the causes of the prolonged stressful event. They are not the stars of the show and are not required to have screen time every five minutes.

Actual Need for Zombies on The Walking Dead

Simply put – zombies are hot and continue to be one of the hottest pop culture creations. Would you have watched The Walking Dead if the catalyst was Mad Cow’s Disease? Would the show have gained such a following if it was about how people dealt with a giant snowstorm? Would you have watched if it was simply a show about how people were dealing with all of the electricity being shut off (lol)? The zombies in The Walking Dead got us to turn on, and the story got us to tune in.

The Need Now for Zombies on The Walking Dead

The creators of the show have been able to get away from the crutch of the zombies being the main antagonist. Zombies have gone more into the background and the human story has taken center stage. The zombies still need to be on The Walking Dead to remind us each week about what got the world to this point. They need to remain to stay as a constant reminder about what will become of everyone in the world unless some type of cure is found.

Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past Opinion, Interpretation, Concern

So we will see Quicksilver in The Avengers 2 and we will see Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past. I will let that soak in for a moment because it boggles the mind how one character will be in two movies from different ends of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Why yes…I do have an opinion and a few concerns.

Quicksilver in The Avengers 2! Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past!

Quicksilver in The Avengers 2! Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past!

What Happened?

Recently, Joss Whedon acknowledged that both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would be in The Avengers 2. On Thursday, director [of X-Men: Days of Future Past] Bryan Singer tweeted: “Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.”

No Legal Issue

Legally speaking, there is not an issue with this as Fox has the rights to use Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch since they are mutants. The company can also reference the fact that they are Magneto’s children. On the flip, Marvel can use the characters since they are Avengers but cannot reference them as mutants or reference that Magneto is their father. So legally, we can see Quicksilver in The Avengers 2, and we can see Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Interesting Concerns

Since we will see Quicksilver in The Avengers 2 and see Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past, we have to be concerned about how he will be portrayed. We should expect fission in the comic book community over how he will be portrayed. We should also be expecting both Marvel and Fox to attempt to outdo the other in his portrayal.

Let’s Say…

Let’s say Marvel expects to use Quicksilver in The Avengers 2 as a background character who simply makes an appearance. Fox will have to answer that by using Quicksilver in X:Men: Days of Future Past as more of a secondary character. Marvel will have to respond by making Quicksilver a primary character. Foxwill have to…

Neither company is going to want to be outdone by the other on the portrayal of the character. Both know they will be fighting for the Quicksilver fans. They know there will be fissure in the comic book community over how Quicksilver is delivered and the companies will want their side of the fissure rooting harder, and as pleased as possible.

Quicksilver in Both Movies is Good

Fissures in the community cause opinions. Opinions cause discussions. Discussions in the comic book community are a good thing. Anything which will keep people talking about our favored form of entertainment is a good thing and it should be encouraged. On the negative side, a battle for attention could hurt both movies if overplayed in the media.

Precedence?

I am wondering if the use of the character in both movies could set some type of crossover precedence. While I highly doubt Fox will allow Wolverine to cross into the Avengers movies without a fight (even though he was an Avenger on many levels, there are slightly smaller X-Men who have been on the team composed of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Could we see Beast in one of the Marvel-made movies? How about Storm, Cannonball, or Rogue? Most importantly – SQUIRREL GIRL!!! Remember, the most powerful mutant ever (she did defeat MODOK, Terrax, and Thanos) was a recruit of the Great Lakes Avengers.

Give us Squirrel Girl!

Give us Squirrel Girl!

It will be interesting to see who this whole battle plays out. Will we be talking more about Quicksilver in The Avengers 2? Will we be talking more about Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past? Who cares? Controversy creates cash and that is all that matters in the end for the industry. Well, that and sustained income – but that is a story for another day.
