AMAZON RETAILER SALES DATA 2018 Annual Report

Sales data was compiled by one retailer, with sales exceeding on average of 50 units per day, of all 2018 sales on the Amazon.com third party sales platform.  Data was compiled taking the top 100 sales in each of 5 categories and sales types of items in separate sales groups.  This data is released in order to effectively show the sales of comics outside the usual sales platform for Comic Books, These platforms are traditionally Brick and Mortar Comic Book Shops (sales through Local Comic Shops (LCSs)), convention sales and on other online sales platforms such as eBay, Facebook and online stores.  The prices are determined by an aggregate of all sales of a product, averaged across the years sales of that ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) across any different SKUs (Stock Keeping Unit) that might have existed for that ASIN.  In many incidents multiple SKUs were used for items listed at different times across the life span of that particular ASIN and when that happens those would be compiled together to form these sales figures, average prices and total gross sales figures.

A brief commentary about the following report is now available through this link.

New Comics are defined by as books issued from January 1st, 2017-December 31, 2018 and sold from January 1st, 2018-December 31st, 2018.

List #5 Graphic Novel and Collected editions both Soft cover and Hard Cover by Units.  This will show total sales by units for all Graphic Novels, Collected Editions of soft covers and hard covers.  This list needs a slight explanation.  As a Seller of Comic Books and related merchandise, the retailer purchases  close out merchandise from Publishers, Closed or Closing Comic Book Stores and Comic Book collectors at significantly refused wholesale prices.  Many of the Gross Average Prices for these units are far below retail MSRP (Manufactures Suggested Retail Price) and in many cases below even industry Wholesale Prices.  It shows the effective sales price in volume for in demand product and what it sells for in a competitive market.  Many times these prices are below the Primary Amazon Prime offering price but selling quite actively at the lower price.  But it conveys the idea that even when a manufacturer or publisher liquidates a product from its back stock there is still a very profitable and lucrative secondary market to customers through the Amazon.com sales platform.

An Open Letter to the Comic Book Industry from Dennis Barger of Wonderworld Comics

Open Letter to the Comic Book Industry:

Let me start this letter out with a cliché…children are the future of this industry.  If you do not subscribe to this philosophy,  then you might as well stop reading right now.  There is no other way to put this—our industry of print comic books is dying.  The number of readers is falling fast.   By my estimate,  there are roughly 70,000 readers for each of the best selling serialized comic books released today.  After counting cross-over readers from the Big Two and people who only read Indy comics,  I would guess that we have around 120,000 actual people reading comic books today.  Judging from the attrition rate that we are losing readers,  we need 12,000 a year to start reading comic books and getting hooked on visiting the stores that remain.  When you consider that there are roughly 2,000 comic shops that number means each store needs to be making six new readers a year.

I am a huge supporter of IDW and especially their all-ages line of comics.  It wasn’t until they released  My Little Pony comic books, that I decided to dedicate almost 10% of my store to a kids’ section.  Now when I say kids, I mean kids the age of my children, 6-12 years old.  This is the pure age that if you get them into a habit of reading, they will read for a life time.  I have been a huge supporter of IDW’s cartoon network licenses with Samurai Jack and Powerpuff Girls.  Not that Boom! Studio’s Adventure Time and Regular Show weren’t enough, but the kids and fans of those shows weren’t coming in on a regular basis enough to dedicate the space to just them.  Now it seems that everyone has dedicated an effort to a kids’ line of comics, most notably DC Comics,  Art Balthazar and Franco offerings.  But nothing got them through the door on a regular basis like My Little Pony.  IDW showed me that as a publisher,  they had a great commitment to getting kids through my door and I wanted to be ready for them when they got there.  When a kid comes into my store, they are greeted with a sucker, left over Free Comic Book Day comics, Archaia’s Mouse Guard hardcovers that I ordered enough to have for freebies and a kids’ section of all-ages comics from every publisher.  I feature books like Jeffrey Brown’s Vader and Son and Brad Meltzer’s new book I am Amelia Earhart and every small price point kids’ toy I can buy from Diamond.  I create new comic readers every time they walk through my door.

I know I am creating my six new readers and then some.  I spend $2,000 a year on Free Comic Book Day for kids alone, giving each kid who comes in 10 free comic books from our selection.  By spending that money today,  I will hopefully make those kids customers for life.  It is my “get them off the video games and into comics”  philosophy.  And let me also say, that in my opinion, this is the last generation of kids that we have a chance to win.  They are saturated to the point that “pop culture” is the only culture around them.  If we can’t win these kids over, surrounded by Avengers movies and TV shows with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Batman Legos, Star Wars cartoons and video games and Walking Dead zombies on every parents T-shirt,  then I don’t know what will.

Which brings me to the point of this letter, The Powerpuff Girls #6 comic book subscription variant by Mimi Yoon.  A phenomenal piece of art by an extremely talented artist, commissioned by Cartoon Network and mandated to be placed on a licensee’s comic.   It was submitted through Diamond Previews to retailers, ordered by retailers and finally on Final Order Cut Off date seen by me for the first time.  It was clearly missed by several people, because some didn’t find it offensive and other just simply didn’t look hard enough.  When I finally saw it,  I was floored, angry and dismayed.  In this day and age, when that happens, you do what everyone does, share your feeling on social media.  We all do it, only in this day and age, people listen.  Media picks things up and more social media shares it, and it continues.  If anyone in this industry doesn’t think we  live in a 24 hour news cycle,  you are kidding yourself. Everything happens in 24 hours.  It took 24 hours for Bleeding Cool to run a story on a facebook post; it took 24 hours for more to pick that up;  it took 24 hours for ICV2 to call Cartoon Network;  and it took 24 hours for them to cancel the variant cover and media around the world to pick up that story.

It also took 24 hours for people in this industry to paint me as the villain in all of this.  I will not discuss why this cover upset me and this is the last time I care to talk about it, aside from this.  I did not feel that it was appropriate for the cover of a book aimed at young children,  especially young girls, and many people agreed with me.  A Hollywood corporate machine like Warner Bros and Cartoon Network would not have pulled it unless enough people saw that this was inappropriate in some way.  Count how many things Hollywood has lost money on because there was a controversy.  You’ll only need 1 hand.

We are the only ones who can police our industry, the comic book industry.  We are the creators, publishers, distributors, retailers and customers. Comic book creators work diligently to create content which brings in customers.  Publishers take risks on a daily basis with their bottom line to make sure there is work for creators and products to sell.  Distributors make sure that the retail side is properly supplied.  Retailers pick and choose what books they think they can sell, take risks on everything they order,  and supply the customers with the products they want.  Customers look to the others to make sure they have books every Wednesday that are high quality enough to shuck over $3.99 apiece, every week of the year.  Sometimes when I talk to people in our industry they lose sight of a few links in that chain.

Let me point out to you, Hollywood is not a link in that chain.  For licensed comic publishers it may be, and for customers who only read licensed comic it is.  For creators sitting around and waiting for that fat proverbial “Hollywood Movie Check” it  might be…but from start to finish,  Hollywood is not in that chain.  We need to remember this.  Hollywood came into this chain and told a publisher what they had to do, for no one’s betterment but their own.  Hollywood needs us, the comic book industry, we are the frack needed to pump into their dying wells.  The second we lose sight of that we are done.  We cannot let them into the middle of our industry.  No one from Hollywood has to tell creators like Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples how to create new readers,  no one from Hollywood walks into a comic shop and tells retailers how to create new readers,  and IDW knows how to create new readers without Hollywood dictating what’s on the cover.

All it takes is  six young new readers created by every comic book shop when they walk through the doors to maintain this business we all love.

All it takes is one giant mistake to upset the parents of those new readers and we will lose this industry.

Sincerely
Dennis Barger
Co-Owner of Wonderworld Comics
Taylor, MI

Dennis Barger Makes International News in Regard to Powerpuff Girls Comic Cover

PowerpuffWonderworld’s own Dennis Barger has made international news in connection with IDW’s decision to cancel an alternate “Powerpuff Girls” comic cover by artist Mimi Yoon after Mr. Barger pointed out that the cover seemed to sexualize the pre-teen characters. The story has been picked up by the Hollywood Reporter, London’s The Guardian, and other noted news sources around the world.
A controversial comic book cover featuring an off-model version of Cartoon Network’s Powerpuff Girls has been pulled ahead of release, following online complaints about it oversexualizing the preteen female superheroes.

Screening of Compound Fracture at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

Prior to my days of writing about comics, I wrote about horror movies for multiple websites. I always jumped at the opportunity to see a movie if there was a special screening with creators or actors. These screenings gave me the unique opportunity to pick the brains of those in the know of the movie. This weekend at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, you will have the unique opportunity to do so with the special screening of Compound Fracture.

Creators and actors Tyler Mane and Renae Geerlings will be on hand along with the evildoer of the movie, Derek Mears. Head here to learn more.

It’s Pick of the Week Time! Battle of the Atom Rages

Wolverine and the X-Men #37 have walked away with my Pick of the Week this week. I have to say that it was a hard week to win as there are great issues out this week from Justice League Dark, Rat Queens, and I was impressed with the possibilities of Velvet. The Battle of the Atom rages on and Marvel continues to strive with this great crossover.

STK621293Non-Traditional Pick of the Week

If you have been reading the Battle of the Atom, rest assured that Wolverine and the X-Men #37 has delivered strong product just like the other chapters in the crossover. Instead of vaguely discussing the issue, I want to take a moment to explain why I am so happy with the Battle of the Atom series.

Discussing the Battle of the Atom

Yesterday, I found myself discussing the Battle of the Atom crossover with a friend who has been collecting for longer than I have. We both agreed that this crossover is not traditional as it is limited to four titles, an added book (Battle of the Atom #1 and #2). Think about crossovers we have had in recent years such as Civil War, and Fear Itself which have crossed dozens of titles and multiple issues of each. Seeing the compact size of this crossover makes me hope publishers take note and stop the overwhelming crossovers which cost hundreds of dollars to read.

Time

The Battle of the Atom has been crunched into a few short months. How many crossovers last four months or more? Give me a strong story and develop it as quickly as possible without dragging it on. Keep my attention without giving me the chance to lose interest.

Wolverine and the X-Men #37 was not the overall best chapter of the Battle of the Atom crossover, but it makes me hungry for the next chapter. It was also strong enough of a story to pass the others on my reading list this week.

Technical Difficulties Are Over

We had some technical difficulties over the last few days due to issues at Network Solutions – the domain registry company. These issues were widespread across many websites and have caused for issues in posting and site stability. According to posts by NS, it appears that these issues are now over. If you tried to read the site on Tuesday, your computer might not have found it. Rest assured, we are still here…and looking forward to Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

I See DC Comics Losing Market Share Right and Left

I have noticed a disturbing trend among many comic book readers and collectors who are dropping almost everything, or everything, they read from DC Comics. The anger is still resonating in the market at the Villain Month allocation. I have a strong feeling that DC Comics will fall hard in market share for September-October when we see the numbers in a few weeks.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1

My Monthly Pulls

Personally, I have dropped about half of my regular DC Comics pulls. After the disappointment which was Trinity War, I could not hold on for any more issues of Justice League, Justice League America, or Pandora. I was turned off to some titles by the hiatus from the story lines – such as Suicide Squad.

A Positive for the Market

Many of the people who have told me about dropping DC Comics titles are taking the opportunity to try out other titles from other publishers. For the market, this is a good thing. Too often, people will drop titles out of product anger and not pick anything else up. This causes the market to shrink – and that cannot be afforded by the market right now.

Uphill Battle for DC Comics

Right now, I see DC Comics having an uphill battle as they have to win back retailers who were discouraged by the Villain Month Allocation and win back readers who were upset by the titles, the execution, or the hiatus of their regular stories.

Next Month

While I have no clue how far down DC Comics will fall from their big numbers win in the September War, I do see them falling. I would be surprised if Marvel did not take back the top spot, especially with the traction the Battle of the Atom has been getting. DC Comics will still be in second place for market share, but I see the gap shrinking between DC Comics and Image.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Only Days Away

Only days until Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and I get more excited with every passing day. As you might have noticed, there have not been as many posts as usual on WonderWorldComic.com. Some of you know I am on staff for the convention and have been working long hours to make sure everything on my end is order.

If you have the opportunity, look for me at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this weekend. At the after parties, I will have extra time for you to pick my brain, or tell me about perspectives we have put forth on this site (positively or negatively). I look forward to seeing many of you this weekend.

During Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and in the following days, I will be posting news, interviews, and observations from the convention. Kelly will be posting as well.

After the convention, we will be announcing some new additions to the WonderWorldComics.com family. Looking forward to that.

In case you have not noticed, Kelly will be running a panel on Sunday. I hope many of you come out to support her:

Gender in the Comics

Saturday 6:15 pm Regency A

Exploring the representations of “alternative” sexualities in comics specifically in DC and Marvel. The focus will be on the implications of these representations…what does it mean for the LGBT? Hosted by Kelly Jackson, a graduate student of American Literature and Culture. Her most recent research project is concerned with themes of colonialism as they relate to Captain America.

IDW Publishing, IDW Entertainment, and the TV Market

News recently broke that IDW Publishing has created a new division, IDW Entertainment, to work on getting IDW Publishing properties on TV. I see this as a strong move and believe all comic book publishing companies should look into having similar divisions.

Why TV?

The Walking Dead, Arrow, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are only the tip of the iceberg. Marvel and DC Comics have both recently stated that they are looking into having more shows on TV, why shouldn’t there be a space for IDW Publishing? Zenescope has been pushing for a TV series for well over a year, it is time that some of the other companies stepped up to the plate. The advertising dollars and extra exposure could shift the market considerably.

Why Now?

It makes sense for IDW Publishing to get into the comic book-based TV market now since it is still in infancy. Next year would be too late.

I am looking forward to good things from IDW Publishing in regards to the TV market. I wish my friends there good luck.

#DetroitFanfare Official Hashtag of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

From the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con website:

“#DetroitFanfare is officially a go! What is #DetroitFanfare? It is the official hashtag of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

If you are going to be talking about the convention on social media, please use the #DetroitFanfare hashtag. That way we do not drown Twitter and Facebook with fifty different variations of name in hashtag form.

We are looking forward to entertaining you all weekend long!”

I think it is a good idea that there is an “official” hashtag for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this year. I have seen many conventions in the past where people are posting about the convention using every variation of the convention name possible. Uniformity can help the convention gain more popularity and get any news coming from the convention out faster.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night Preview

Detroit Fanfare is just over a week away and I want to take a look at why you should attend Friday. Some of you might overlook the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night, but should not.

detroit-fanfareDetroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night

The Friday Preview Night is open to anyone with a weekend pass. The convention is only open from 6:00pm-9:00pm. There are also many events happening once the convention floor doors close.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night Events

Most of the convention-long events are opening on Friday including the convention floor, the 24 hour game room, and tabletop gaming. After the convention floor closes for the night, even more fun begins.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night After Events

The Shel Dorf Awards and Party will be taking place at 10:00pm. This is not only open to nominees and other industry figures, convention goers may attend as well.  You have the opportunity to sit at the same table with media and industry guests.

The Deadworld Zombie Walk will begin at 9:00pm. This is a fun event to participate in or watch. Immediately following, the Deadworld Zombie After Party will take place near the pool. There will be a DJ and dance floor. The Deadworld Zombie Costume Contest will take place at 11:30pm.

A sing-along showing of Little Shop of Horrors will take place at 11:30. Once you are done, you can attend either the Shel Dorf Awards Party or the Deadworld Zombie After Party.

Interesting Benefits of Attending the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night

Friday night has less traffic than the rest of the weekend. If you are planning on being at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con for the entire weekend, Friday is a great way to ramp up your energy levels. You can also have a better chance of seeing an industry or media guest up close. With less people around, they are sure you have an extra minute to speak with you.

The Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Preview Night also gives you the opportunity to check out the deals and shop around the convention floor. It is a great time to gauge everything for sale so you can decide which items or comics should enter your collection. The lessoned crowds also helps you to determine the best ways around the convention and a better idea of the overall layout of this year’s show. The addition of the other side of the hotel means there is much more Detroit Fanfare Comic Con than in past years. Give yourself the extra time to check it out.

To learn more about what is taking place at this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and to purchase your advance tickets, check out the website here.

No Surprise: DC Comics Cancels Vibe, Katana

DC Comics has officially announced that Vibe and Katana are both cancelled. This should not be a surprise to anyone since the company tried to make third-string characters into ones which could carry their own titles. They tried to catch lightning in a bottle, but went about it the wrong way.

DC Comics takes out Katana and Vibe

DC Comics takes out Katana and Vibe

Too Early

Both Vibe and Katana were given their own series too early in the New 52. DC Comics should have realized that. Granted, we are two years in, but the characters did not have time to develop their fan bases. Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman have generations of fans to fall back on. Constantine and the Phantom Stranger both had cult followings which had grown over the years. Swamp Thing is a staple of the Dark Universe and will always have fans to call his own.

The Variance

I am sure some of you are going to try to counter by “too early” statement by pointing out how my favored Justice League Dark got a series very early and has been able to strive in the Diamond Top 100. The example is different since the JLD relied on characters on the team which had already gained a following over the years (Constantine and Deadman). DC Comics made the right moves with that title by inviting Flash, Swamp Thing, and the Phantom Stranger into the pages to bring in more readers early on.

Who is Next for DC Comics?

I see Pandora getting the boot within the next few months now that the Trinity War is over. I dropped it after Trinity War because her story was not strong enough to keep me happy over multiple issues. I see many other readers doing the same. I fully expect her title to be the next on the chipping block.

DC Comics has been playing this game for a very long time. It should know that you have to build a character up to great heights before launching a title with it. They could have launched Katana and Vibe at the dawn of the New 52 since most of the comics were starting on a level playing field (outside of those with decades of followers). Now was not the time for the two titles.

Visions of the Future in Uncanny X-Men #13

I am sure people are going to be buzzing over the next few days about some of the future statements which were made in Uncanny X-Men #13. I could pull quotes directly from the text, but sadly I would break my rule about giving spoilers. Instead, I will point out my thoughts about the implications of these quotes and how they impact the readers.

Uncanny X-Men #13

Uncanny X-Men #13

Unique Vision into the Future

Uncanny X-men #13, and the Battle of the Atom crossover as a whole, give us unique foresight into the future. Certain statements, especially those in Uncanny X-Men #13, make us wonder how the Marvel Universe will change in the upcoming years. How are we led to certain events which the characters are discussing?

On the Positive Side

Many readers will look at these statements in a positive light and will be driven to read more in the upcoming years in an attempt to have their questions answered. They will keep Uncanny X-Men #13 and will refer to it from time to time as we get closer in upcoming years to seeing the statements made in the comic come to fruition. Those who missed out on the issue will do what they can to snatch it up. Will the price skyrocket? I doubt it, but it might increase slightly over the years and jump when we get to some of the future events mentioned within.

On the Negative Side

Some of the future statements made in Uncanny X-Men #13 will upset some readers and could cause a divide between these readers and Marvel/Bendis. While I don’t see a significant number of readers flowing this path, we can all think of people who would toss the comic saying “Forget this…they are making this [Censored] to crazy.” Of course, ticking off readers is part of the business, but it is a reality I don’t like to see.

Bendis More Important?

We have all heard that Bendis has plans going out years in advance. If he is setting these plan further into motion through the quotes in Uncanny X-Men #13, he might be a genius. He might be declaring his worth to Marvel in these quotes and almost forcing them to keep him on the books for many years to come. Honestly, who else could tell his stories better? Smart move.

Things Can Change

I don’t want to, but I have to point out that the statements within Uncanny X-Men #13 are visions of the future which could change over time. Hopefully, though, we have a wild ride from here on out.

Thoughts on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 4

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4 was a bit of a let-down for me, but I understood why it had to be a let-down. Certain storytelling devices needed to be used early on in the season, but I think the series creators sacrificed substance for emotion. I also had a major WTF? moment.

Is Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a good enough representation?

Not happy with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4

Storytelling Devices

When telling an ensemble story, such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., creators have to use certain devices (tricks) which will bring closure to certain personality and conflict issues while adding more personality and conflict issues. These issues help to define characters as we typically understand characters through how they deal with the world around them and hurdles which need to be overcome.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 4 and Storytelling Devices

Think about how Skye and Agent Coulson apparently settled their differences in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4. This was to add more cohesion to the team and give the viewers more of an emotional tie to both Skye and Agent Coulson.

Agent May needs to be solidified as a team player. An example was given of a worst-case scenario of a person who was not acting as a team player to give her an example. The device was fairly predictable as non-team players always learn from a worst-case scenario.

In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4, we found something from Agent Coulson’s past creeping up on him to show how he has changed. Storytellers often show how things could be better or worse by delving into the leader’s past. Those on the team are supposed to find comfort from things being better now or things being worse now and gain a better acceptance of the leader’s humanity.

The show was not initially picked up for an entire season. Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4 fell into a tryout period, creators had to use as many plot devices as possible to gain the most connections possible with fans. I expect these devices to be regurgitated throughout the next few episodes until the full schedule of the series section has been passed.

My Major WTF? Moment from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 4

When Fitz, Simmons, and Skye were in the van in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4, they blew off the possibility of being able to predict the future or any other psionic power. Really? You have a person who can turn himself into a giant green monster through radiation, a super soldier who was frozen in ice for a few generations and survived, a man with a super suit which can knock out buildings, and a demigod running around the planet, and you don’t think psionic powers are possible? The world was just attacked by aliens who had an alliance with a demigod from another dimension and you don’t believe in psionic powers? Really?

Uncanny X-Men #13 is My Pick of the Week!

Uncanny X-Men #13 was impressive this week and was one of the best chapters in the Battle of the Atom crossover. There was so much crunched into the comic, I am sure it will make some reader’s heads spin. It has to snatch my Pick of the Week.

Uncanny X-Men #13

Uncanny X-Men #13

The First Challenge

The first challenge of Uncanny X-Men #13 was to take five separate X-Men factions and merge them into one story. We have two modern X-Men factions, two factions from the future, and one from the past. Granted, the number of factions continues to slowly grow, but Bendis had to make sure to cover each one in this issue and refer to their separate goals and characteristics.

The Second Challenge

The second challenge of Uncanny X-Men #13 was that it had to tie in all of the chapters happening so far. While there have been title crossovers to this point in the Battle of the Atom series, they still held independence. All New X-Men was going in one direction while X-Men was going in a slightly different direction while Wolverine and the X-Men was going in another slight. Uncanny X-Men #13 was used to tie all of these directions together to lead up to the final two chapters in Wolverine & The X-Men #37 and X-Men: Battle of the Atom #2. My guess is that there will not be any tangent directions from here on out in the story.

The Result?

The result is a head-spinning run through the story where you have to pay close attention to everything being said and everything in the pictures. The story curves presented in Uncanny X-Men #13 could have been told over three or four issues, but was edited down to fit into one. You might have to read it twice to make sure you got everything the first time around. While this (story crunching) is a dangerous move in comics, I think Bendis pulled it off with flying colors.

Volunteers Still Needed for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con

The staff of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con still need volunteers for this year’s convention. If you volunteer, you will receive a bunch of goodies for your time including a free pass for the event, food, a t-shirt, a con-exclusive variant, and other comics. Follow this link to volunteer.

Thoughts on Various New York Comic Con Announcements

New York Comic Con has come and gone, and there were a ton of announcements this year. These are some of my thoughts on the announcements this year.

new-york-comic-con1There will be a new My Little Pony Series next year from IDW Publishing. I like the idea as the new series will probably bring more children to comic book reading and collecting.

A crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joe is also coming next year. I have mixed emotions about this as I have seen the idea before and see it as a shortcoming since the military is effectively powerless against the giant machines of Transformers.

Punisher #1, Elektra #1, New Warriors #1, Black Widow #1, Captain Marvel #1, Silver Surfer #1, Ghost Rider #1, Iron Patriot #1 and All New Invaders are all coming. Only one of these comics were on the top of my list for new comics for Marvel, but I will take it. Ghost Rider was on my top list, and happy to see another Dark Universe character come out. Punisher is something I will definitely be looking forward to. I will have to talk to Christopher Yost about his New Warriors #1 when I see him next week at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con.

Pictures are emerging of Michael Cudlitz as Abraham on The Walking Dead. He looks good in the role. The rest of the group are coming in as well. Looking forward to the additional members as they are some of my favorites from the comic.

Some new Avengers series coming out from Marvel. I thought we already had enough…but we can go with it.

The Crow will be back for IDW. I already knew that – but I don’t give spoilers.

Kevin Smith is going to do a little writing on Batman. I will have to read it, but will hope that it is not like his last handful of movies. I will also hope that Batman does not take to fart jokes.

Zach Whedon is going to write a follow-up of Serenity. That should be interesting. I am hoping the story does not go off the main path.

Stephanie Brown is coming back to the DC Comics Universe. Meh, never a fan…sorry.

I hope New York Comic Con is the only convention we ever hear about with RFID chips and Twitter takeovers. That will discourage fans from coming to conventions.

Betty and Veronica are leaving the Archie Universe? Why do I simply see this as a way to get temp readers? Will they be gone for a year just to make a triumphant return to get temp readers again? Removing staple characters is one thing if a lineup changes every few years. Not after decades.

It looks like The Question will finally get his own series in DC Comics according to a panel at New York Comic Con. It is about time. You can’t really have a Trinity if you are going to ignore one of the characters in it.

Robert Kirkman announced Outcast which will be The Walking Dead for exorcism. I think I will give it a try. Happily another writer will be on the project. I think Kirkman is spread too thin as it is.

FF and Fantastic Four are ending in January. I am sure Fantastic Four will continue on somehow. Again, it is not good to get away from staples. We will see what happens.

George Romero is bringing Empire of the Dead out with both vampires and zombies. NotLD is one of my favorite movies of all time and the original Dead Trilogy are tops in my book. I am a little nervous about Romero getting into unchartered territory especially since I did not like his last few movies.

I am a little discouraged with New York Comic Con as there were not any earth-shattering announcements for me which have me popping hard outside of the new titles from Marvel. Out of those new Marvel titles, though, two have me more excited than the rest. Hopefully, we have more great news to tell in the next few weeks.

The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere – Thoughts

The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere is easily the best season premiere the show has had. While there were a few shortcomings in the story, I was happy the season could start out on a strong foot. Hopefully the momentum of The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere is an omen for a great season ahead. There are spoilers here. If you have not watched yet – go away.

The Walking Dead

Should there be cannibals on The Walking Dead?

What I Liked in The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere

  1. I love when the show creators zoom forward in the future. This was something welcome in The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere. I like having to play catch-up.
  2. The zombie rain the grocery store was one of the best effects I have seen in the history of The Walking Dead. By placing this type of effect in The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere, the new show-runner proved we should expect anything at any time.
  3. No Governor? Good. I was hoping they would keep him off the premiere to give more impact when he showed up.
  4. It is about time the creators of the show made someone die in the middle of the night and turn into a walker. This is something which has always been a cloud hanging overhead. It is definitely time they address it.
  5. Having Daryl being the one standing under the helicopter was a great idea. From that moment in The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere, we all remember that Daryl can go at any time.
  6. The eyeless zombie is one of my favorite of all time.
  7. Seeing the Woodbury survivors milling in with the known survivors is a good move. There is enough time to break up the cliques which might have formed.
  8. The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere gave us a strong look at the kids of the show. I am sure there are people who do not like the idea of “TWD Kids,” but it adds another element to the story and more challenges.
  9. What is with the pig? Could it be the sign that pigs are going to start turning? They do have internal organs which are similar to some of humans. Their immune systems are also similar. Of course, it could also be the insertion of a livestock disease which could be making the humans sick.

What I Did Not Like in The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere

I know that The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere takes place months in the future from the last season, but there are a few aspects which bothered me. I also know many of these issues will be clarified in the upcoming weeks – but these issues still remain in my mind.

  1. Both Daryl and Michonne are charismatic, cracking jokes, and smiling. Part of their mystique is their stand-offishness and their inability to strive in social situations. They are wildcards which don’t go with the rest of the pack.
  2. Rick and the survivors spent weeks (if not months) trying to get Daryl to stay near the rest of them at Hershel’s farm. He tried to keep clear of most of them at the prison during the previous season unless he needed to be. Now he is part of the council? It does not make sense with his personality. He is a problem solver, not a leader.
  3. During the break between the previous season and The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere, the survivors have created spikes to impale walkers around the gate. Why couldn’t they come up with barricades which would keep walkers away from the fence?
  4. The entire segment with Eddie (the head) and his wife needed to be explained on Talking Dead. Not a good move. While I really liked the directing in the episode, the question of “why was this section here?” was not apparent during the episode and should have been developed better. Granted, her character was to display giving up, but it was too drawn out for that type of message, especially since we have heard the message before.
  5. How can anyone survive long in a cloth tent?
  6. Isn’t there a gaping hole in the back of the prison where Tyreese and his crew came in which has never been fixed? Shouldn’t that have been seen well before The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere?
  7. If Rick is not part of the council, why would Carol not want Carl to tell him about teaching the kids about fighting? Rick does not have a say.
  8. Batteries are probably hot commodities. Why would the survivors be using them in iPods to listen to music?

Overall, I was more than satisfied with The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere. I am looking forward to an awesome season.

NYCC Tweets – My Thoughts on the Subject

I am discouraged by the fact that the biggest talk coming out of New York Comic Con this year is about the NYCC tweets. Multiple fans have complained that their Twitter accounts were “hijacked” by the convention and posts were made without approval.

new-york-comic-con1What Happened?

Apparently, the badges for NYCC have RFID chips in them which can link to fan’s social media accounts. The issue comes in the fine print in which fans sign over the ability to post to social media. The NYCC tweets are made by the convention and appear that the fans in question are enthusiastic about being at the convention. The convention claims that the NYCC tweets are something which the fans in questions opted in for. Fans are not excited.

If This Happened to Me

If I were at a convention or event at the promoters somehow took over my account, I would not be happy at all. I hope for the sake of the convention circuit and lifestyle that this does not become a popular trend. Hopefully, the anger over the NYCC tweets sends a message not only to NYCC, but to every convention and event around the country about taking over social media and small print.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Picked Up for Full Season…Duh

The minds behind the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Facebook page have made an announcement that the show has been picked up for the full season on ABC. Now, I could be wrong, but wasn’t that a foregone conclusion? Isn’t that like me coming out an declaring that I will be discussing Detroit Fanfare Comic Con on this site? Maybe it would be like a weatherperson saying that “The sun will come up tomorrow?”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Too Big to Fail

Not to downplay the announcement about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. being picked up for the full season, but the show is too important to ABC, Marvel, and Disney as a whole to not be picked up for the entire season. The thought that it could not have been is so foreign to me that I can’t even fathom it as a possibility.

All Autographs $25 or Less for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is only two weeks and one day away, but there is something I think you should know about autographs at the event. You don’t have to worry about paying huge fees to get autographs this year.

The highest autograph fee for this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is $25. That is much lower than the $45-$60 we have all seen at other conventions around the country. It will be nice to get some good autographs this year without paying an arm and a leg.

Specific Guests

As readers already know, this site has covered Brian O’Halloran (Clerks), so he will be autographing free over the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con weekend. Tyler Mane does not charge anything for a photo is you purchase an autograph from him. As you know, if you have been to a comic book convention before, most comic book creators don’t charge anything for an autograph.

Instead of spending all of your money on autographs, you have money left to spend on comics, a room, or food. Don’t forget to eat!

NYCC: Has Image Already Won?

I have to feel sorry for more publishers at New York Comic Con this weekend because it appears that Image is going to walk away with the win as being the most talked about publisher at the convention. How couldn’t they be? The Walking Dead #115 is easily the highest-selling comic of the year and The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere is this weekend. When you look at those two items, it just makes the other publishers (even the Big 2) look silly.

Sure

Sure, DC Comics is going to be able to push how it has the best month in September, but the clouds of Image’s week and the Villaim Month allocation are going to hang over the company’s figurative head. Marvel can point to Infinity and how the series is putting up huge numbers, but one issue from a regular series just screamed past the House of Ideas. If the Big 2 can’t compete with the week Image is having with The Walking Dead comic and The Walking Dead TV series, how can the smaller companies compete?

New York Comic Con is the second biggest comic book convention in the world. If Image can manage to be the talk of the town every year going into NYCC, how long will it be until we are talking about Image being one of the top two publishers of comics?
