Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 is My Pick of the Week!

Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 is my Pick of the Week! I know…I know…some of you are going to wonder about me picking the comic of one of my favorite characters as my pick of the week. In all honesty, this was one of the best issues for the character in his 61 year history.

Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 is my Pick of the Week

Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 is my Pick of the Week

The Meat of the Story

As you well know, I am not interested in giving spoilers. The meat of Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 story is about what we (specifically the Phantom Stranger) will do for those we love. What type of Hell would we put ourselves through? What types of sacrifices would we make? While many storylines have touched up on these age-old questions, Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 takes these questions in more of a literal sense than we are used to reading.

The Cameos

There are many cameos in Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9. Get ready for an issue where you will see Etrigan, Sin-Eater, Justice League Dark, Doctor Thirteen, The Question, The Spectre, and some of the forgotten enemies from past iterations of the Phantom Stranger.

Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger #9 Needs This Honor

While my Pick of the Week is a small honor, the issue in question deserves it. Even if you are not a fan of the Phantom Stranger, you will understand the pain he is enduring and the storyline he was put in this month. I am sure that many of the statements made within will be reflected in the upcoming months during the  Trinity War and/or Forever Evil. We will have to wait and see.

Dan DiDio of DC Comics is a Sick and Twisted [Censored]!

After reading the announcements about the DC Comics Villain Month and the Forever Evil crossover event, I was reminded about how I think Dan DiDio is a sick and twisted [Censored]. How dare he help to oversee a company which would make me rethink my life-long claim of being a Marvelite? How dare Dan DiDio help make DC Comics a [Censored] company which I am interested in giving my hard-earned money to?

This content is censored.

Before the New 52

When I was young, the first three comics I read were The Defenders, Spider-Man, and The Phantom Stranger. These three comics started off a lifetime of loving comics. Over the years, I expanded to more titles, but found myself expanding more in Marvel because I could connect with those characters better. Sure, DC Comics still gave me Batman, the Phantom Stranger, and Flash – but that was about it. I always thought of DC Comics as a lackey behind Marvel. I expanded more into the independents than I did with DC Comics because the company always left a dry taste in my mouth instead of satiating or creating a hunger like Marvel did.

Dan Didio has Gone Too [Censored] Far!

It was bad enough that Dan DiDio took one of my favorite characters of all time (the Phantom Stranger) and changed him for the New 52. It was even worse when I realized that I liked all of the [Censored] changes he oversaw. Now, that [Censored] is working on two projects (Villain Month and Forever Evil) that I am looking forward to. Dan DiDio has gone too [Censored] far!

Dan DiDio Costs Me Money!

Every month, I find myself going through the racks at our Detroit area comic book store and picking out some different comics to try out. 3 out of 5 times, I find myself floating over to those [Censored] DC Comics titles and giving one a try. My [Censored] pull list is full of those [Censored] DC Comics titles. [Censored] Dan DiDio and his ability to direct a company towards storylines that I enjoy reading! The damn DC Comics titles in my pull outweigh the Marvel ones by an average of 2 to 1!

Don’t Argue With Me!

Some of you might say that some of the blame could be placed on Jim Lee or on the writers or on the artists or on other people at DC Comics. Wrong! Dead [Censored] wrong! Anger is easier to deal with when it is directed at someone you can connect a name or a face with. Anyone who reads comics should [Censored] know that! Everyone needs one arch nemesis. My arch nemesis is Dan DiDio and I will not [Censored] rest until the day he personally apologizes for making a [Censored] product that would pull me away from Marvel!

Update

Dan DiDio has personally apologized to me for making such a good product. I will continue to keep my eye on him, though.

Denver Comic Con Lines – Another Convention Plagued With Long Lines

News out of Denver is that fans are waiting in very long lines to get into Denver Comic Con. Some reports are placing the wait is up to four hours to get into the convention center. This is a dangerous trend with comic book conventions which needs to be taken care of immediately.

Comic book convention lines. Ain't nobody got time fo dat!

Comic book convention lines. Ain’t nobody got time fo dat! – This is not actually a picture from Denver.

The Recent Past

Both Dallas Comic Con and Motor City Comic Con have made headlines recently due to long lines which have kept fans at bay for hours. With Denver Comic Con having the same issues, how many fans are going to become discouraged about coming to future comic book conventions?

Denver Comic Con Issue

According to Channel 9 News in Denver, the promoters and management of Denver Comic Con were not prepared for the long lines they were experiencing today. While having more guests than you would expect is a good thing, not being prepared for the numbers is something different. Comic books are in an upswing, the top movies each year are typically related to comics in some way, and more people are heading to conventions than ever before. It would be better for conventions to overstaff the front door than to automatically expect the status quo will work year-in and year-out.

The Damage Long Lines at Conventions Can Cause

First off, we have to take a look at the health risks involved with excruciatingly long lines. Issues such as exhaustion, heat exposure (in the summer) and hypothermia (in the winter) are issues which comic book convention promoters have to be concerned about. A comic book convention is supposed to be a happy event and it is the job of the staff to make sure health concerns never come into play.

Another issue is the short-term issue of people turning around and going home disappointed because they did not want to wait in line. This takes money out of the pockets of the convention itself, the vendors, and the guests.

Over the long-term, many fans could easily become discouraged by seeing stories about comic book convention lines and decide to stay home. Instead of taking another huge upswing in attendance, conventions might start losing attendance spikes because fans are too scared about the possibility of standing in line for three or four hours.

Comic book convention promoters and their staffs need to sit down and plan for dealing with lines which would boggle their minds. Comic books are the going thing, and comic book conventions need to make sure they stay high on as many lists as possible. Nipping this problem with long lines is the first step.

Convention Hotels Need to Treat Us Better

Why do convention hotels discount genre convention attendees? I have attended dozens of conventions across the country and in Canada, and have found a similar problem at most of the hotels I have stayed in. As someone who has worked as a travel writer, there are certain aspects of how convention hotels discount their guests which the average person might not ever notice. Even though you might not have noticed these issues, it does not mean they should not be changed.

DC's WTF Certified

WTF Certified

The Restaurants

First off, restaurants inside convention hotels will often try to change their menus to “accommodate”  conventiongoers. Sometimes this is a good thing as with the time that I covered a convention made up of mostly rabbis who wished to discuss the future of the Jewish faith. The hotel restaurants made sure the food being prepared was kosher. This was an understandable change.

On the flip, we have the Hyatt Regency McCromick Place, where we stayed this year during the Diamond Retailer’s Summit and C2E2. This is a 4-Star restaurant which is known for having delicacies and food which is high above what might be found at other hotels in the city. Why in the hell would they have a buffet made up of cheese nachos, chicken fingers, and pizza? For $13 (the cost of the buffet), I would have rather eaten pizza at one of the pizza joints the city is known for. Why would I want to get cheese nachos at a top-of-the-line hotel restaurant?

While attending the Up in the Aether steampunk convention, I had dinner at the Doubletree Hotel Dearborn/Detroit restaurant. I was told that the chicken in my chicken Caesar salad was prepared fresh. My Grandma was a chef and I can tell the difference between fresh and heated meat. I overheard one of the waitresses say “We can tell them whatever we want. These geeks won’t know the difference.”

The Pool and the Staff

Have you ever noticed that hotels do not have lifeguards on duty at the pool during conventions? You might not know this, but many four and five star hotels pay lifeguards but lay them off or reassign them during weeks of conventions. This is a way they cut their costs to make more money from the conventions. The same goes for many of the other types of members of the staff from room service to front desk moderation. A key area you might notice this is the empty valet parking or coat check rooms during a convention. Now, this is not the case with all upper tier convention hotels, but many of them.

Comped Rooms

I have found it more difficult to receive a comped room due to some type of issue during a convention than during any other time of the year. I went to a horror convention a few years ago and overheard a girl complaining about how there was mold in her shower. She stated that she did not notice it until the morning after she had spent all night in the room. The person at the front desk first told her that he would send someone up to clean her room. I stepped in an pointed out how simply cleaning the room might not remove the mold particles from the air.

The gentleman suggested moving her to another room. I whispered to the guest that she should be comped for the inconvenience and the possible health risk she faced. She spoke up and the person at the desk said he was not authorized to give her a free night and that there was not someone on staff who could authorize that. I stepped up and gave the person behind the desk my card which gave my press and travel writing credentials. Amazingly, the clerk remembered that he was authorized to give her a free stay at the hotel that weekend.

The next time that you stay at any of the convention hotels in the country, remember that you should be allowed the same privileges and should be treated with the same amount of respect as any other guest staying the hotel during the year. Convention hotels need to realize they need to keep us as satisfied as their regular guests. If not, we will not be back in the future.

Review of Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

I had the opportunity to attend the Up in the Aether steampunk convention at the Doubletree Hotel Southfield/Detroit. What did I think?

Here I was hunting Steampunk fans in their natural environment - Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

Here I was hunting Steampunk fans in their natural environment – Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

Broken Misconceptions

I went into the Up in the Aether steampunk convention with certain misconceptions about steampunk conventions. Don’t blame me as I had never attended a steampunk convention before. I expected everyone to be talking in strained and feigned European accents and to be in character the entire time. I found this was not the case as there were only a few people who attempted to hold perception of character. The fake accents, though, could not be missed.

The Overall Feel of the Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention

Most of the guests at the Up in the Aether steampunk convention appeared to be having a good time. They were in their element. If you are a steampunk cosplayer, or someone who has a deep love for the genre, I could see you having a blast at the convention. I have been to many different types of conventions and can usually pick those people who are simply there because they have to be or because they believe they need to be to make it through the motions of tradition. I was hard-pressed to find those types of individuals at this convention.

Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

The Casual Attendee

I am a fan of steampunk literature and media adaptations, but have never considered following the “steampunk lifestyle.” I know this is a genre convention, but I am sad to say that I did not gain the level of excitement at the convention that fans of the “steampunk lifestyle” did. I am not making a suggestion that they make the show more inviting to non-genre fans as that might take from the magic enjoyed by the traditional attendees of a steampunk show. As with most genre-strict conventions, non-genre fans are not catered to and should not expect to be catered to. If you are considering the “steampunk lifestyle,” the Up in the Aether steampunk convention would be a great convention to check out. If you are a casual fan of the literary genre, you might not find very much to do.

The Convention Itself

I have to commend the planners and promoters of the convention for having a constant schedule of events for attendees to participate in. Panels on attire creation, historical classes, and weapons displays filled the roster of events. Live bands, DJs and a marionette animation could also be experienced. There were very few dead times during the convention.

One Area for Improvement

There was only one area where I could say that the promoters and planners of the Up in the Aether steampunk convention needed to improve upon. While this is a hurdle created by the layout of the Doubletree Hotel, it is something the convention’s minds need to figure out.

The hallways on the first floor of the hotel are fairly narrow. If something is going on in one of the hallways, maneuvering around can be very difficult. They had a live mermaid perform, and whenever she would be swimming in the pool, the hallway would fill up with people trying to see her swim. This made it difficult for hotel guests to get to their rooms as they had to pass through that particular hallway. As someone who has covered conventions for years for various sites, areas of congestion are a pet peeve of mine, but still believe they can ruin an event or an evening for conventiongoers.

All-in-all, I would say that the Up in the Aether steampunk convention gave a great showing for the first time out. I wish them many years of success. You can learn more about the convention by following this link.

You can see pictures of the costumes in our Cosplay Photo Gallery.

The Girls are Taking Over Comic Cons – A Guest’s Perspective

While attending the Dallas Comic Con, I happened to notice the abundances of female visitors. It’s one thing to hear that women are just as into comics as men, but another to actually see it. Moreover, where the guys will talk shop about their favorites; the girls are more prone to dress up.

;lkj;

The stereotype of the unwashed comic con fanboy is also coming to a close. The guys are starting to realize that girls are there, and they don’t want to be caught blowing one off for a ‘fake geek girl’.

And who started that insane slight on the girl nerd? I need not point any fingers. We all know where it started. That’s unimportant. The part that should be paid attention to is a that a mob of high school girls are showing up at the convention dresses up, and not just to get attention. I’m not sure how sexy a red-head dressed like she’s homeless with a mock busted lip and a sign “The end is nigh” alongside a female, cigar chomping, armored up Comedian is.

Here is the reality of it: like games, girls are not afraid to love comics; I suppose much in the same way Bronies exist.

100_0218This is not what we are seeing in the comic book world though. In DC Comic’s new line-up, we find noble she-warrior turn into a nymphomaniac with the memory of a gnat (Starfire), transitions from sex-symbol-to-woman-breaking-the-mold with empowerment get demoted to a second (or third) stringer girlfriend (Power Girl), and the culling of the female creative staff at DC from 12% to 1%. It’s time for comics to reflect the audience better.

But maybe Amanada Conner (former artist for Power Girl) had pointed out at the Dallas Comic Con: “I think in 10 years, you’re going to see way, WAY more female comic creators”

My mind goes back to the group of 16 year-old girls dressed like prominent DC characters, whom collectively named “Nightwing’s ass” as one of their favorite characters and “just died!” when they saw Neil Patrick Harris voicing Nightwing in “Under the Red Hood”. These are the girls that will make their way into the industry in the next decade.

Are we ready for this? I sure am. I’m mildly humored at the notion of the sexism boot being tried on a different foot. I am hopeful that once the girls try it on, we can all meet in the middle for a deeper level of mindless entertainment, fantastic adventure, new twists on old noir storytelling, and most of all: diversity.

Why Comics from the 1980s and 1990s Aren’t Worth Much

Dallas Comic Con 2013: A Guest’s Review

This isn’t the comic book world I thought it would be when entering Dallas Comic Con. I’ve known it was changing, but I hadn’t realized just how far behind the comic world was to the real world. The male dominated industry should pay closer attention to the conventions. There were almost equal parts of men and women at the Dallas Comic Con, and the women are coming alone more than not, as well as coming younger.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Dallas Comic Con 2013

Big Sellers at Dallas Comic Con

Big sellers in the comic department are Walking Dead, New 52 titles, Blackest Night, Spidey, and any number of the Gotham titles (mostly Nightwing and Batman). The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seem to be on the upswing still despite the controversy surrounding Micheal Bay vs. the fans. Classic title sales went to any of the older Marvels and Batman selections.

What Was the Top Attention-Getter at Dallas Comic Con?

The overall Dallas Comic Con winner for popularity in costume, fan paraphernalia, people’s choice, and vendor sales would have to be Deadpool.

Top WTF? Product at Dallas Comic-Con

The popular “WTF?” product was PopHeroes. These weird little figures are clearly the next “MiniMates”. MVP dolls were the Dallas Comic-Con exclusive Reverse Flash, the Black Flash, and Deadpool color swap version.

Biggest Letdown of Dallas Comic Con

Nathan Fillion had canceled at the last minute due to health issues. He made the announcement on his twitter, apologizing to his fans.

Biggest Crowd-Pleaser at Dallas Comic Con

Kevin Conroy was more than happy to pick up the slack of the missing writer/space pilot/pompous musical superhero. Batman saves the day once more.

The Ratings for Dallas Comic Con

The Location (4.5): I give the Irving Convention Center credit for being fresh, artistically appealing, and very accommodating for fantastical photos. The points deducted are for lack of sensible mobility upward. You can’t comfortably traverse floors without congestion unless you use the massive outside stairs… in Texas.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Access (2.5): The “merry-go-round” the ticket booth was a bad move. You stand outside and wait to get your wrist band, then go back out side and wait after you get your wrist band. Access to the main room on the first floor was also the same 10 feet of area that you needed to go on or come off the escalator. Five points of access to the main hall and they chose the access next to the escalator to be the only entrance.

Merchandise (4): With the number of people coming into this convention, I didn’t see much in the way of freebies for convention goers. BigFanBoy had a freebie room set up; but all they had was a few old movie posters, one or two new movie posters, and 3 different Tyler Perry movie posters. Do not bring Tyler Perry movie posters to a comic book convention. There was a Dallas Comic Con exclusive booth, but nothing free.

On the flip side, there was plenty to be sold and within reasonable prices. Nearly every comic was half off. T-shirts were $20 or less. Nearly every vender was motivated to empty out their backstock. VIP members had access to a small cache of loot for visit.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Dallas Comic Con 2013

Side Shows (3.5): There was a “Sunday Funny Paper” exhibit at Dallas Comic Con – neat historically, but falls flat with the modern crowd. Robotech Theater was also kind of cool but would have been a much bigger hit with all of the direct to video DC Animated movies.

The “Face-Off” workshop and booth at Dallas Comic Con with Heather Henry was an excellent idea with the constantly growing cosplay crowd. Comic book related or not, Darth Vader and Boba Fett from the 501st Troopers charity group went over well. Bigfanboy was bogus considering the extensive number of comic movies on the big and small screen alike recent and in the future yet nothing to feature. Again, whose bright idea was it to drag Tyler Perry posters into a comic book/sci-fi convention?

Fan Service (4): Shatner, Spiner, McFadden, and Burton were a nice turn-out for sci-fi lovers. John Romita Jr. owned the new generation of comic fans while nodding to the “old school” with reverence and legacy, while Jim Steranko commanded the respect of lovers of the “old school” of both heroes and horror in comics. The crowd demanded it, so Conroy managed to pick up 2 panels to address fans. Despite not being much of a Power Rangers fan, Jason David Frank was entertaining even for me. Adam Baldwin was a late add, and managed to prevent a full-scale riot for Firefly fans. The number of orange toboggans were insane.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013 Cosplay

Dallas Comic Con 2013 Cosplay

In the comic book alley at in the back of the Dallas Comic Con exhibition hall, Phil Noto stayed hard at work drawing fan requests, and could easily be named the hardest working fan server in the convention, second only to Romita jr. Amanda Conner couldn’t find much time for herself, even with her man – Jimmy Palmiotti – running assist along side her. The most approachable was John Lucas, making no bones about talking straight and frank to anyone opening their mouth his way. I even bought some Conan panels from him.

Also making a show, the infamous Delorean from “Back to the Future”, the Jeep from “Jurassic Park”, and the Dallas Ghostbuster’s Ecto PT Cruiser.

The down side it the lost their big hitter when Fillion bailed.

Bio Needs (3.5): This is an unspoken but highly important quality of a convention: bathrooms and food/drink. The bathrooms at Dallas Comic Con were regularly serviced, but occasionally I would find a facet that didn’t work. The concession stands had basic “ball game” food for slightly less than “ball game” prices, so I mark that as a slight plus. It was a rocky start on day one, but they picked it up and ran smoother on day two/three. Some food trucks showed up after opening, offering gourmet hot dogs and even a cupcakes. Great food, but also much more expensive.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Dallas Comic Con 2013

Final score: 4 (out of 5)

Dallas Comic Con isn’t the type of Con you travel out of state for without having an agenda. For us Texans, it is worth the time and travel. There are ways they can improve, such as the control of traffic and the method of dealing with tickets. There seems to be a need for more … not any particular “more”, but it seemed like the space wasn’t fully maximizes in some very slight ways. I was able to find unused rooms spread out here and there. Perhaps not banking the show on someone that has a history of bailing on events. Also, try booking in people that are more connected to the industry and happy to be there … not Andrew McCarthy.

Comics Alliance About to Rise from the Grave?

There is a new posting today on Comics Alliance after the site has been closed down for three weeks. Apparently, there is a heartbeat left in the site after all.

The blanket reason for AOL's elimination of Comics Alliance was a disservice to the writers and to the readers.

The blanket reason for AOL’s elimination of Comics Alliance was a disservice to the writers and to the readers.

What Happened?

An article entitled “Heartbeat,” appeared with a picture of Batman standing over the supposed grave of Batman giving a wink after he hears the Dark Knight’s heartbeat (see it here). Are we getting a glimpse into the future that Comics Alliance might soon rise from the grave?

Why Would Larry Be Happy?

I am sure you are wondering why I would be happy about another comic book news and information site coming back to life after supposedly being closed. While I would prefer you stop by this site for your news commentary and information, I am happy there are other comic book websites out there and hope Comics Alliance comes back online soon. We have worked hard here at WonderWorldComics.com to make our product different from what you would find on other sites, but the fact that you have a choice is important. Think about how boring the comic book industry would be if you only had Marvel or DC to choose from. Also, the stronger presence the comic book industry has online, the stronger it becomes in the physical world.

Motor City Comic Con Facing Horrid Problems This Weekend

Our Detroit area store is receiving phone calls today about severe issues at Motor City Comic Con centered on guests not being processed in time and excruciatingly long lines to get into the event. I made some phone calls to get to the bottom of the issues, and this is what I found out:

Disclaimer

I know that some of you might question this article because this site, and the store it is associated with, are sponsors of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con. Rest assured, my task with this article is to supply you with information about what is going on in the area as it relates to comic books and comic book collecting.

DC’s WTF Certified

What is Going On at Motor City Comic Con?

Callers to our store and people on Facebook have been complaining all morning about excruciatingly long lines to get into Motor City Comic Con. According to the calls and to posts on Motor City Comic Con’s Facebook page, people who purchased advanced tickets online are being forced to stay in the same line with people who are purchasing their tickets on-site. This is causing for lines to get backed up and has apparently caused a lag in processing tickets.

Easily Avoidable Problem

I hate to do this, but the long lines are something which could have been avoided by the Motor City Comic Con staff and by the promoters of the event. Many major conventions have separate lines for on-site ticket purchasers and for those which have already purchased their tickets in advance. For those of you who have read my reviews of conventions on this site and on previous sites that I have written for, will remember how I praised Detroit Fanfare, Motor City Nightmares, and other conventions for splitting the lines to make sure they move faster.

The Fire Marshall Rumor

A rumor began to spread around noon today that the Novi Fire Marshall had closed Motor City Comic Con down or that he had temporarily shut the event down. I contacted the Novi Fire Department to find out if this rumor was true. The representative of the Novi Fire Department told me that the rumor was not true. The Fire Marshall is working with Motor City Comic Con to get the staff to move through processing ticket holders faster to ensure the long lines outside do not become a safety hazard. Already, some people have passed out in line and human safety is a strong concern. Again, this is something which could have been avoided with better planning.

The Parking

The Gridiron Greats Hall of Fame Dinner & Gridiron Greats and Detroit City Sports Autograph Signing & Sports Memorabilia Show is current going on at the Suburban Collection Showplace along with Motor City Comic Con. That event, according to the sources which I have seen, have been offering free admission and free parking. This event is taking parking away from Motor City Comic Con and has forced at least one visitor to park over a mile away at a Kroeger’s and walk for 15 minutes to simply wait in line. It is the responsibility of a convention staff to advise visitors of events going on in the area which might case for backups and other issues such as this.

The story of mishaps and miscommunications at Motor City Comic Con is ongoing and I will update this article as more information becomes available.

(Added)

Both the Detroit Free Press and Bleeding Cool have picked up on this story.

Are you facing issues at Motor City Comic Con? What is your story?

No Comics Pulls This Week – What to Do?

I am facing a very odd week this week as I do not have a single comic book issue in my pull. As someone who reads over twenty comics on a regular basis, it is a conundrum when I don’t have anything waiting in the pull box at the store. What to do…what to do?

Graphic Novels

I have some graphic novels waiting for me, I can get a jump on some of those since I have a week without comics. If you are like me, you push off graphic novels to weeks when you have nothing else to read, or very little to read. This would be a perfect week to do so.

The Red SkullOrganize the Collection

Even though I keep my comic book collection well organized, there are always little things which need to be done. I can go through my database and see if any of my top comings have gone up or down. I could make sure everything is filed and organized.

Back Issues

There are some special back issues in my collection I have not read or have not read in a long time. Weeks like this are always good for pulling out a comic book encyclopedia or a Who’s Who or even an Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe just to brush up on a little useless trivia to pop out on someone in the near future.

Try Something New

I could also try a few new titles I have not looked into yet. Out of three titles, I will usually find at least one to add to my pull list.

Of course, these are suggestions I have to myself. What do you do during weeks when you have few or no pulls?

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 – What We Know So Far

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 is still over five months away, but this year’s show is shaping up to be one for the record books. The fourth year for the convention will be one which will open even more eyes to the type of comics-forward convention the Motor City can put on. Here is the information about Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 that we know so far.

detroit-fanfare

When?

Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con will be held from October 25 – October 27, 2013.

Where?

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 will be held at the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. This hotel used to be known as the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, but the location changed hands just after Detroit Fanfare 2012. Instead of simply having the left half of the first floor and a few rooms on the second floor, Detroit Fanfare Comic Con will not overtake the entire first floor of the Adoba Hotel Dearborn and a portion of the second floor. The convention will also still have full access to the Rotunda room on the top of the tower.

How Much?

Even though the convention is expanding, the promoters and staff are working hard to keep prices low. $15 will get you a one-day pass for the show. Weekend passes are only $20 and will get you in all three days. Children 12 and under will only be $5 on Friday and Saturday and will be free on Sunday. Parking will still be free.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 was able to negotiate great rates for those staying this year at the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. The special convention rate will be $87 a night (plus regular taxes and fees). Each room stayed in for the convention will receive two weekend passes (A $40 value)!

What is Returning?

The Shel Dorf Awards, the Detroit Fanfare Zombie Walk, and the 24 hour gaming room (in the Rotunda) will all return this year. You will still be able to get an arm-full of comics through Blood 4 Comics and potentially save a life in the process (which isn’t that what being a superhero is all about?). The live Rocky Horror Picture Show viewing will be back along with Speed Painting and the silent auction. Don’t forget about all of the Cosplay events, costume contests, and trick or treating on Sunday for the kids – they will return to this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con as well. A mermaid will be swimming again in the pool. Oh, and the Official Convention Party will be rocking the walls of the Adoba!

What is New for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013?

Even though the calendar reads May (as of this writing), the planning for new activities, events, and surprises is in full swing for October. The biggest (and most noticeable) change will be the expansion of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con within the walls of the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. Crowds will be splitting off in more directions with the addition of the rooms on the right side of the hotel.

This year, the main showroom will focus on vendors which are directly related to comics. You will find the room filled with tons of comics, graphic novels, and comics-related merchandise. A second showroom on the opposite side of the hotel will be called the Bizarre Bazaar and will be the home of people who sell cool items, but are not directly related to comics. Artists Alley and the areas for Media Guests and Comics Guests will also be expanded.

Kid’s Day on Sunday is expanding with the addition of a Monster High Ice Cream Social, the Fairy Princess Training Camp, and the kids will also be able to try a hand at miniature construction with special LEGO building activities.

Updated – Cancelled: Avenging Spider-Man – And That is It!

According to the Marvel Subscription Newsletter, three separate Marvel Comics titles are coming to an end (UPDATE BELOW):

Avengers Assemble will be ending soon, and all subscribers will roll over to Avengers written by Marvel superstar Jonathan Hickman. Avenging Spider-Man will be ending, and all subscribers will be switching to the all new Superior Spider-Man Team-Up written by Christopher Yost. Last but not least Marvel Universe Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be changing its title to Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble. Be on the lookout for these exciting new titles!

(UPDATE) Since the original posting, Marvel has sent out the following message:

Whoops! Has Kang been messing with the timestream or have we just been getting confused?

The Avengers keep on assembling! Avengers Assemble is not ending, it’s carrying on its merry way, and its loyal subscribers will stay right where they are.

Marvel Universe Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will also be keeping on track.

We’re so sorry about the confusion! Avengers forever!

It appears that Marvel has taken out an axe similar to the one taken out yesterday by DC Comics (See Here). It will be interesting to see if there are other titles added to the cancellation list within the next few days.

Comic Book Bundles: Issues to Keep In Mind

I have seen more and more comic book stores and vendors at comic book shows and conventions selling comic book bundles. There are certain aspects you should keep in mind when purchasing comic book bundles.

Comic Book Storage

Comic Book Storage

The Number Run

Some vendors and comic book store owners will place the first numeric issue in their comic book bundles facing one way and the final numeric issue facing the other way to tell you what the spans are of the comic book bundles are that they have for sale. Unless otherwise noted, do not assume all of the issues between those two numbers are present.

An Example

I was at a convention recently and say a vendor with comic book bundles of Batman Adventures. Each bundle had #1 facing one direction and #36 was facing out the other direction in the sleeve. I asked if all of the issues were present in the bundle. He hemmed for a moment and said that most were present. Since the bundles were for sale for $25, I automatically knew #12, which is the first appearance of Harley Quinn in a comic book, must not have been inside. I noticed someone purchasing the package and being very disappointed that the one issue he wanted was not included.

Comic Book Bundles with Number Slips

Some vendors will place number slips on the front of the package. I have found these vendors usually stay true to having all of the issues in the span included. If you are purchasing a four issue series, you should be able to tell if all four are present by counting the spines. With the larger comic book bundles, there is nothing wrong with asking to make sure.

Quality vs. Quantity

If you are looking for reading copies of the comics in the bundles, comic book bundles might be the best way to go since you don’t have to spend hours, weeks, or years trying to find every issue in the run you want to read. Typically, you are not going to find gradable copies in comic book bundles. Placing multiple issues in a sleeve will usually compress at least some of the issues to where they would have spine damage or other types of pressure damage. If you are looking to complete a large run of comics (say all of The Avengers from #100-#300), a buyer might not mind that some of the issues are not up to par with the others.

I have purchased many comic book bundles over the years and have learned that they are a great way for expanding a collection fast and for creating a readable run without effort. As long as you make sure the issues you are going to want are present and remember that (in most cases) and quality of the issues will not be gradable, you should be safe purchasing comic book bundles too.

Difference Between a Comic Book Show and Comic Book Convention

Comic book conventions and comic book shows – these are two terms we use all the time. Did you know that the two descriptions are technically not interchangeable? Do you know what the difference is between the two?

Silver Age comics

Silver Age comics

Comic Book Show

A comic book show is a one-day event which bring collectors together with vendors. Comic book shows are typically held at small venues such as a VFW, a fraternal hall, or even in a school gymnasium. There might be guests signing autographs or comic creators doing sketches, but everyone goes home at the end of the day.

Comic Book Convention

A comic book convention is held over multiple days at a venue or in a series of close venues. Since the conventions are longer than the show, convention promoters will take extra steps to make sure there is more to do so panels, contests, and extra guests are added.

The Main Difference Between Comic Book Shows and Comic Book Conventions

Someone suggested one time that the difference between a comic book show and a comic book convention is that conventions have panels. I have been to little local shows with panels, so that cannot be the difference between the two. The actual difference between the two is the length of time, and nothing else. If the vendors are present for one day, it is a comic book show. If the vendors and guests are there over multiple days, you would call it a comic book convention.

Should You Get a Table at a Comic Book Show?

I have met many comic book collectors and many comic book merchandise collectors who wonder if they should get tables at comic book shows or booths at comic book conventions to sell off parts of their collections. Comic book shows and comic book conventions are great ways to liquidate a collection for little money and little effort.

Graphic novels

Graphic novels

The Alternatives

Taking a large collection directly to a comic book store to sell it will most likely not get you the top dollar for your collection. This is the easiest way to move a collection. Selling a collection off in parts will typically make you more money, though, than selling it in one swoop.

Selling parts of a collection, or an entire collection, on a site like Craigslist can be time-consuming and your listing is likely to get lost among thousands of others in your area. Ebay and Amazon both take portions of your money.

A Little Work Goes a Long Way

I am not going to lie to you. Working a booth at a comic book show or comic book convention is sometimes hard. You might get pulled in two or three directions at one time. The payoff can be immense if you want to liquidate a collection. At a show, you might have hundreds of people stop by your booth while a comic book convention can bring thousands by. In many cases, you might make up your money in the first hour or two of the show or convention and everything else is pure profit while you watch the issues you don’t have room to store go home with other collectors.

If you are looking at liquidating your comic book collection or your comic book merchandise collection, I suggest looking at the opting or getting a table at a show or a booth at a comic book convention. You can get rid of tons of issues you can’t store anymore and make the most money doing it.

Interview with Big Dog Ink’s Kimberly Hutchison About Women in Comic Book Industry

Kimberly Hutchison is one of the co-owners of Big Dog Ink and is a rarity in the most male-dominated market of comic book publishers. I am honored to have been granted her first interview.

Big Dog Ink

Big Dog Ink

Larry Poupard: Do you face an uphill battle in the “old boys club” of the comic book industry?

Kimberly Hutchison: There is a certain lack of people taking a woman seriously, I suppose, but once they begin talking to you, they take you more seriously as a publisher. Of course, that is still not very much. I think that is a general consensus among many in the industry where they are more interested in “What you can do for me.” Until the mood changes among other publishers, that is going to remain the same for smaller publishers.

I personally seem to get overlooked more, so that is why I defer much of the business to Tom [her husband and the other co-owner of Big Dog Ink]. With Tom, he is male, and he is more of what everybody expects as the head of the company. We put him out there and he tends to be the one people see.

Larry Poupard: As a woman, what types of preconceptions do you face with potential fans when you are standing behind the booth at shows and conventions?

Kimberly Hutchison: This question is perfect. I think the best way to answer this is to describe an interaction I had with a fan about a month ago. We were at a small show and signed up with some other independent creators and someone with a few long boxes of comics.

A gentleman walks by and it was just Tom and I at the booth at the time. He saw me and did a double take before walking back.

He said, “So, you the artist’s girlfriend?”

I kind of rolled my eyes and said, “Nope.”

Then he said, “Sooo, you are the helper?”

“Nope”

I forget about what else he asked me, but it was equally condescending. It was something along the lines of being a female behind the table. Then he said, “What does a pretty young thing like you have to do with comic books?” I smiled and said, “Oh, I own the company.” He replied with, “Oh, well then. These [books] are nice looking,” and he walked away obviously feeling like a moron.

That is the general tendency, though. Usually when I am talking to fans they are really nice. Sometimes, though, I am asked what I do, or who I am married to. I find myself say, “Well, actually, I own the place.” I explain how I try to make sure everything runs smoothly in background. Sometimes they are surprised because I am a woman, but I sometimes get the reaction like I got from the gentleman at the show.

Larry Poupard: How do you think the industry would differ if there were more females in the front offices? [Diane Nelson is the president of DC Comics, but one or two do not equal equality]

Kimberly Hutchison: That is a hard question because I don’t know what we [Big Dog Ink] would do differently if we had a male CEO in charge of the company. I could see women being given more of an opportunity to create and publish in comics. For Big Dog Ink, Tom has a lot of say in female creators and he pushes for them too. Regardless of who comes through the door, if the person has talent and is good at art and is a good writer, you will get an opportunity.

I think we work with a lot of women in the company. As compared to men, I would have to do a count, but I think it is close to equal if not slightly tilting more on the women’s side. I think this is something which would change with more women in power.

I would love to see more female writers out there. I am really not sure why there are not more [female writers in the comic book industry]. In the literary world, there tends to be more female literary writers than male. For some reason that does not translate well to our field, and I don’t know why. I think more women in power could make that shift happen. I personally would love to see that happen as I would love to work with more female writers and read more. I think we [Big Dog Ink] are very good, though, at looking at all types of talent.

Larry Poupard: Do you think the problem resides in women not attempting to get their foot in the industry door, are they being overlooked, or that the “old boys club” just won’t allow them in?

Kimberly Hutchison: I think that there are so many male creators in the industry that many female writers are artists look at the industry as being a guy’s thing. I think right now more women are being invited in and back in as they are being show that these comics are for women as well. I think we are finding a new generation of readers with more women who are becoming readers. That is bringing them more into creative aspects. They are going to want to make comics and they are starting to pitch more.

I don’t like talking negatively about other companies. I think it is more a societal thing to discount women. I remember being at a show and hearing a certain comment. I applaud our creators for not saying anything to this gentleman.

We [Big Dog Ink] were at Wizard World Chicago last year and we had four artists with us. Three of them were women. I was talking to a gentleman who was buying a book and I told him that “We have some great artists here who are taking requests for commissions. Feel free to talk to them about that or anything else you might like.” He answered with “Oh, I am very picky about the art I have created for me from  my women artists.” It was right in front of the artists. We said “Bless your heart” and let him go on his merry way.

I think the comic book industry can make women feel like they are silenced and they might want to contribute in some way. I still think the societal aspect comes into play. I don’t have a psychology degree so I don’t know where to start to break it down but there is still a barrier to entry.

Larry Poupard: Three years ago, a few women started “Women in Horror Recognition Month” as a way to encourage more women to look at creative aspects in horror. The goal was to stop the mentality that women should only be scream queens in horror movies. Do you believe the comic book industry needs a similar organized push or do you believe the current trends will continue on their own and provide more opportunities for women?

Kimberly Hutchison: I have not seen the numbers myself. I know that there are sites which track the number of minority creators and I believe they also track the number of women. The actual stats are not published and I believe the sites try to build these stats on their own by using their best guesses based on names. Since we have a gentleman who works here [Big Dog Ink] by the name of Shannon and a gentleman who worked here Alison, I can see how the statistics might be wrong if they are simply going by names. It would be pulling teeth to get a publisher to actually give up that information.

Just from working at shows and convention, I can tell you that most of the women I see in artists alley on a regular basis are pigeonholed into the fantasy genre. There are definitely other representations which are lost with artists and writers who work in other genres. It [an organized push for more females in the industry] is definitely something I would encourage.

Madame Xanadu, I believe the last volume to come out, had all female artists involved in the project. The originalregular artists, whose art got me interested in the book in the first place, was a woman. I did not even realize that until I was part of the way in. That was a very notable endeavor. I believe Gail Simone is doing the same thing right now with Red Sonja.

I am all for a push. A dedicated month or a single event might be hard, but I think projects like those I mentioned should be encouraged by publishers. They help to show women on an equal basis.

Marvel’s Market Share is Shrinking and Should Not

Marvel’s market share is decreasing at an alarming rate. Many sites are talking about how DC Comics has slid under 30% of the market and how Image and IDW are gaining market share each month. I see the bigger story as the loss of Marvel’s market share with what the publishing company is putting out right now and what is being planned for the near future.

Marvel's market share is dropping

Marvel’s market share is dropping

The Numbers

Marvel’s market share (Retail) dropped about 2.1% between March and April and Unit Market Share dropped exactly 2%. In March, Marvel had 7 titles in the Diamond Industry Statistics Top 10 and had 5 in April. With all that Marvel has going on, we should not even be worrying about Marvel’s market share but we should.

What is Going On?

Marvel NOW is still young and there is a strong chance people are beginning to lose interest in the “reorganization of titles which is not a rebooting.” We are in the Age of Ultron and the X titles are building up to a possible all-out war between the X-Men factions. Guardians of the Galaxy started recently as a build-up to the full return of Thanos and their own movie. As I am writing this, Iron Man 3 is the top movie in the world. Strong storylines in The Amazing Spider-Man, New Avengers, and other titles should be bringing in more reads every week.

Why is Marvel Losing?

While it is too early to tell for sure, I believe people are turning away from the Big 2 in droves for various reasons. I have heard readers talk about how they are upset by all of the recent crossovers and drawn-out by the idea of having to pick up twenty extra issues over a few months to finish one storyline. Others find themselves being pulled towards the smaller press titles which are taking off. I have also heard readers say they just need something new and Marvel and DC Comics represent the “old” which these particular readers are tired of.

Looking Back

Of course, if we look back at December 2012, Marvel was holding on to a 33.4% market share, which is lower than the 37.95% they held in April. Marvel should be doing better right now, though, than they are. If Marvel’s market share continues to slip, stress levels will rise as the industry giant falls in the same boat as DC Comics. In business, once market share begins to downward trend, massive changes are made in the offices and in production. I will not speculate on what types of changes, but Marvel needs to get its act together or it will be competing stronger with Image and IDW in the very near future.

Thoughts on DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology

Today, the DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology 2013 #1 is released in stores across the country. I am sure this book is going to take some heat from both casual readers and die-hard collectors, but I have a soft side for the publication. Before (and after) you judge the DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology, think about these points.

DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology

DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology

Price of DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology

If you are a creator or executive for DC Comics, please skip over this section and go to the next one. I know some of you read this site and some things should be kept from you.

It is free! How can you argue with free? In all honesty, I would have paid $5.99 or more for the DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology as it is something I have been hoping for. I will continue to hope that Marvel will produce a companion like this for their titles.

Where Your Anger Resides

If you find yourself angry at this publication, figure out where your anger resides. Are you upset that a particular graphic novel was not on the list [read – Gotham by Gaslight] or that a particular character you really like was overlooked [read – no love for Aquaman]? Are you upset that the book appears to be as heavy with new titles as with classic titles [read – exactly what I just wrote]? Does it really matter in the end?

What DC Needed to Do

DC Comics killed multiple birds with only one stone. We have wanted an updated listing of the top graphic novels and the DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology delivers that. We wanted a suggested reading order and the DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology delivers that. DC Comics wants to regain at least some of their lost market share. They are taking a step to make up for some of those losses in the form of the graphic novel. We have wanted the company to focus on improvement, and that is what they are doing here.

Remember “Suggested”

Remember, the DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels and Chronology is full of suggestions from the company. This is not a Bible which we have to follow and it is not something set in stone which future generations are going to believe are the only options for their reading. The 128 page book delivers suggestions to us and it is up to us to take them or not.

Negative Preconceptions About Comic Book Readers – [Censored] ‘Em

It still surprises me that in today’s society people still have negative preconceptions about comic book readers. It does not make sense to me how many people still believe comic book readers cannot let go of their childhood or that comics are only for children. I can’t wait until the day we can say that the negative preconceptions of comic book readers have gone away. I have to tell you about the conversation I had with a particular [Censored] late last night.

This content is censored.

This content is censored.

The Situation

Last night, I found myself sitting in the baggage claim at Metro Airport waiting for my brother and sister-in-law to land. I had an hour to blow, so I pulled some comics out of my backpack. A man sitting a few seats away said “Hey, aren’t you too damn old to read comics?” At first I thought he was joking until I realized the look on his face was serious. He continued with “My kids gave up comics in their teens. Isn’t it time you did the same and grow up?” I not only found myself dealing with someone with negative preconceptions of comic book readers, I found myself dealing with a complete [Censored].

My Reply

Astonished, I tried to pull my composure together quickly and asked him “What is the top movie in the world right now?” He answered by blurting “Who the [Censored] cares? I know it is Iron Man but that does not justify an adult reading comics.” “So, let me wrap my mind around this,” I responded, “millions of people can go see a movie about a man flying around in a super suit, but reading about it is childish?” He then went on a [Censored] diatribe about there being a difference between reading books with tons of pictures and reading a novel. He tossed out all of the typical negative preconceptions about comic book readers.

The Final Response

I grabbed one of the comics in my bag so he could see the difference between comics now, and the comics he grew up with. I showed him how comics are more grown and mature than they were twenty years ago when his children would have been reading. I told him about recent storylines about the murder of a child (Damian Wayne), insanity, and about how characters have to deal with more than just baddies in the modern comics. While I did not win him over to reading comics, at least I shut him the [Censored] up for five minutes until it was time for his baggage to arrive.

Keeping My Cool

It was difficult for me to keep my cool with this particular [Censored] and his negative preconceptions of comic book readers. I decided to leave my anger for this article. I decided to leave it for the [Censored] preps who think they can talk to me about football simply because I have a Lions hat on but think there is something wrong with me when I talk to them about comics when they are wearing a shirt from “The Avengers.” I saved my anger for the people who think they can relate to our subculture because they [Censored] watch The Big Bang Theory. I will save my anger for the next person who brings up his or her negative preconceptions about comic book readers when I am trying to read a [Censored] comic book. I will unleash my anger the next time a person believes the preconceived “truths” from 25 years ago hold true today. [Censored]! Either accept our subculture or shut the [Censored] up!

Comics Alliance Closed: AOL’s Disservices and Obfuscation

By now, I am sure you have heard about how Comics Alliance has been closed by AOL and that thousands of comic book readers and collectors are going to have to find other sites to migrate to for their information. As someone who worked as a freelance online writer for over six years, I cannot agree with the argument which has come out that Comics Alliance was cut due to underperformance.

The blanket reason for AOL's elimination of Comics Alliance was a disservice to the writers and to the readers.

The blanket reason for AOL’s elimination of Comics Alliance was a disservice to the writers and to the readers.

Blanket Excuse for Cutting Comics Alliance

Of course, corporate entities will often come up with a blanket excuse when cuts have to be made. AOL cut many of their information sites last week, and Comics Alliance was one of which was listed as being cut for underperformance. I think there were other reasons why the site is no longer receiving new content from staff writers.

The Numbers Don’t Add Up

Alexa.com is a site which gives site statistics on every website you could imagine. Comics Alliance was ranking higher is almost every category websites are rated on (see here). While Average Time on Site was down by 2% in the most recent three month period, the overall Traffic Rank was up significantly. More people were going to Comics Alliance, but they were not staying on the site as long at the end of the period as at the beginning. This is a problem websites can adjust over a short term. I should know since I have helped sites do so in the past. All of the graphable issues with the site are ones which could be fixed so there must be another reason.

The Leaked Memo

In 2011, Business Insider got their hands on the “Master Plan” at AOL. One of the parts buried in the document (see links at bottom of Business Insider article) was about how the company wanted to expend their offerings to less expensive freelancers who they did not have to keep on the payroll or pay benefits to. Keep this in mind as you read on. I have strong reason to believe the information sites such as Comics Alliance were cut to make way for more freelance workers.

AOL Tried it Before

From 2009-2012, AOL Seed was a content submission site where freelancers and bloggers could write on topics AOL or AOL partners were interested in. I took a few of the jobs at the time but found the publication format to be difficult to maneuver and the money was not always worth the competition involved. AOL dove hard into the content market until it acquired the Huffington Post and found it could save money in the long-term.

The Huffington Post

AOL owns the Huffington Post which promises “exposure” to writers who will submit content to them for free. When AOL acquired the media source, AOL Seed was not needed as much so it was closed. If the Huffington Post can source hundreds to thousands of up-and-coming writers, why would AOL need to keep a site which paid freelance writers to produce content? From a business perspective, the argument could be made that since the Huffington Post model continues to work, AOL does not need to pay staff writers on sites such as Comics Alliance if they can get the same amount of convent (or more) for free.

I see the blanket reason for Comics Alliance being cut by AOL as a disservice to all of the writers at the site and the devoted readers they gained over the years. I fully expect AOL to get back into the comic book news field, but with less expensive freelance writers or with writers through the Huffington Post who want to make a name in the field in the hope of reaping rewards later. I will personally miss Comics Alliance and hope the workers there are able to find stable companies to work for in the very near future.

In closing, I think you should see the infamous video of Harlan Ellison talking about why companies should pay their writers. Since this is a PG-13 site, I cannot display the video here. You can see if by following this link.

Digital Death Part IV: Time to Wake Up Comic Book Fans and Retailers

While attending the Diamond Retailers Summit and C2E2 in Chicago last week, I noticed two disturbing trends in the industry which could lead to the digital death of physical comics, but I also noticed an important glimmer of hope in the fight against digital comics. The glimmer of hope reinforced my push to open people’s eyes to realizing how change is not always a good thing, especially when the change is to digital comics.

The death of the comic book industry will be caused by digitally downloading comic books.

The death of the comic book industry will be caused by digitally downloading comic books.

Little Note to Start Off

I don’t want to bog this article down by giving my points over again about how digital comics will destroy the industry. I don’t want to have to tell you again how digital comics will cause for massive amounts of job loss, the exodus of comic book fans away from the entertainment medium, and how digital comics are a slap to collectors. If you have not heard these arguments, please read the following Digital Death parts first:

Digital Death Part I: Illegally Downloading Comic Books

Digital Death Part II: Dark Reason Behind Digital Comics

Digital Death Part III: Digital Comics and Collecting

Some Retailers Counting the Days

At the Diamond Retailers Summit and C2E2, I noticed how many comic book retailers are essentially counting the days down to their demise. Either they have given up the fight against digital comics or they do not realize retailers have a voice in the transition to digital comics. I found myself explaining how readers, collectors, and retailers do have a strong voice and Marvel and DC Comics will be forced to listen to us if we can collectively become loud enough.

Diamond Giving Up the Fight Against Digital Comics?

Earlier this week, I told you about how Diamond Select showed retailers products which will be in upcoming issues of Previews. The company is not only planning on expanding its kitchenware section, it is also going to carry party favors just like Party City and other chains which would easily be able to knock out a comic book store on selection and buying power.

The addition of a dozen types of ice trays, half a dozen pizza cutters, and Spider-Man party favors shows me that Diamond figures it needs to fill catalogs with something (anything). The company is trying to find a way to stay relevant once the “Digital Comics Armageddon” takes place. Diamond needs a swift kick in the back pockets right now to be forced to realize how digital comics do not have to take over.

The Glimmer of Hope

At the Diamond Retailers Summit, I met many retailers and vendors who are just as mad as I am about digital comics. At C2E2, I found more vendors and retailers, but I also found comic book creators, comic book readers, and comic book collectors. They all have a voice but were either too scared to voice their opinion against the large corporate entities which “control” the market or they did not know how to get their point across.

The Future of Digital Death

I don’t want to say we need to “organize” against digital comics because the word “organize” has become synonymous with unions and I am not interested in starting a union to submit grievances in fashion to Marvel and DC Comics. Instead, I would prefer to use the term “band.” It is time for all of us to band together in this fight. More of us need to vocalize our concerns about the potential future of the industry because once more voices are heard, more voices will emerge.

In storytelling, characters are often allowed to see the future. Characters always wonder if the future is set in stone or if it can be changed in some way. The Digital Death of comics could refer to the death of the print form of the medium or it can mean the death of the push towards digital comics. WE (not a publishing company) are the ones to make that decision!

C2E2 Traffic Flow Issues

While I enjoyed C2E2, I noticed that the convention needs to improve upon traffic flow within the convention hall. There are certain issues the convention needs to look at to ensure everyone has the best time possible their entire time at the convention.

The front of C2E2

The front of C2E2

The Big Problem

One of the most important aspects of a convention for me is traffic flow. Nothing can ruin a convention trip more than needing to go to the bathroom and it taking 20 minutes to travel 200 feet because of congested crowds. On Friday and Sunday, traffic flow was great at C2E2. Saturday was a different story when it could take you what felt like an eternity to travel down an aisle. Also, traffic flow issues can lead to product being damaged or (worse yet?) personal injury.

Cosplay Alternative

Two things the organizers could do in the future to improve traffic flow. First off, many conventions are looking at the option of cosplay photo areas. If pictures may only be taken of cosplayers in certain areas, traffic flow can be improved by eliminating the moments when people ask for a picture to be taken with a cosplayer in the middle of an aisle.

Artist Alley

Artist Alley needs to be more inviting next year. The aisle separating Artist Alley from the vendor floor at C2E2 has many long booths which isolated the two parts of the convention from the other. While I am not a believer in feng shui, I have to admit that there was an energy break from the main floor to Artist Alley.  Larger flow points into Artist Alley will not only help alleviate some of the traffic flow problems at C2E2, it might also help the artists make some extra money.

Security

If you were entering C2E2 with a bag, security would force you to open the bag for inspection. Obviously, they were looking for some type of weapon. If your cosplay costume used fake weapons, they needed to be inspected as well. While I understand the need for this type of security, it bogged down the traffic flow of the convention. At the same time, there was an ironic aspect because you could purchase real weapons from dealers on the convention floor. It was as if the convention was saying, “We don’t want you bringing in anything which could harm someone. If you purchase something on our floor which could hurt someone, we are alright with that.

This picture was taken on Friday when crowds were not at maximum. By looking in the upper right corner, though, you can see how masses would have problems getting around at C2E2.

Hopefully, the promoters and planners at C2E2 will take a look at these issues and figure out ways to clear up the problems. C2E2 could compete with the bigger dogs on the block soon. C2E2 only needs to go through a few minor changes to become the show, and traffic flow is one of them.

C2E2 Impressions So Far (Opening)

C2E2 2013 has only been open for a few hours, but people are making a huge exodus to the event. Comic book readers and collectors, cosplayers, media guest fiends, and pop culture lovers are all finding at last a few hundred items each to focus their attention on.

Can you find the best C2E2 freebies?

Can you find the best C2E2 freebies?

The Vendors

There is a great selection of vendors at the show making it so the show appeals to a wide-range of types of fans. You will find almost everything ranging from comics to toys to gaming to posters to “unique” items which would take a half hour to describe. As a bit of a purist, I am concerned by what I consider to be a low level of comic book dealers. For a show with “Comic Con” in the name, I would have hopped for a dominance from comic book vendors.

Traffic Flow

I am amazed at this point how well traffic has been flowing overall. I have not seen too many stoppages in flow. That is an amazing feet at a show like this.

Artists Alley

I am always impressed by shows which have a variety of types of artists. There is the expected fair of comic book creators, but manga also has a strong showing as does impressionism, caricature artists, and other types of artists as well.

Pricing

Pricing of items at C2E2 are standard for what you might find at any major con. Of course, the pricing is up to the vendors and should not impact that experience of the con, but it is something people pay attention to.

Staff

A strong and knowledgeable staff is the backbone of a convention like C2E2. Some convention promoters focus on guests and vendors and completely forget about the staff. Not so with C2E2. The staff has been friendly and knows where to get information on anything you might need.

Cosplay

I will start posting pictures soon of the cosplay at C2E2. I am impressed by how many great costumes I have seen so far within the first few hours of the show.

If you are in the Chicago area, and are con heading to C2E2 – head down. Even after only a few hours, the show is a hit so far.

Diamond Retailers Summet News So Far

The Diamond Retailers Summit before C2E2 has been a whirlwind so far. There have been many announcements, but these are my personal favorites so far.

Chicago - Diamond Retailers Summit

Chicago – Diamond Retailers Summit

DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels & Chronology

For years, DC Comics fans have asked for a reading order for the top graphic novels to come out from the company. Many websites have tried to list their own chronologies, but we should accept DC’s addition as the “official” listing.

The DC Entertainment Essential Graphic Novels & Chronology will be a 128 pages listing the top 25 graphic novels of all time form the publisher and a reading order for those novels. Word on the street is that this publication will be free. This will become an essential publication for everyone’s collection.

Locke & Key: Alpha 1&2

The story of Locke & Key will not end with Locke & Key: Omega. After the finalization of Omega, IDW will give us two special double issues entitled Locke & Key: Alpha #1&#2.

New and Old at IDW at Diamond Retailers Summit

A new Powerpuff Girls comic will be hitting stores in September. In October, IDW will be launching Samurai Jack. November will see the introduction of a new Ben 10 line.

I received confirmation on X-Files: Season 10 which will clear up some questions going around about the upcoming June title from IDW. Season 10 will take place after the last movie, not right after Season 9. As a huge “X-Files” fan, this was one of the important issues I wanted cleared up during the Diamond Retailers Summit.

“R.I.P.D.” at Diamond Retailers Summit

I was a little concerned about the “R.I.P.D.” movie. Dark Horse showed the trailer, and it was pretty damn awesome. I can see the trailer alone bumping the comic up at least a few notches on the Diamond industry statistics ratings.

Worst Experience at Diamond Retailers Summit

The ladies and gentlemen from Diamond have been awesome, but I found an area where the company can improve the Diamond Retailers Summit next year. Please, don’t serve powdered eggs for breakfast again.

Importance of Comic Book Stores

There is no denying that forces in the comic book industry continue to attempt to dominate the market with digital comics, but the comic book stores still survive. After half a decade of trying to force digital comics on the collector’s market, collectors continue to make purchases at comic book stores. There continues to be a place for comic book stores and the importance of brick and mortar stores cannot be denied.

Wonderworld Comics

Wonderworld Comics

Community Center

Comic book stores are where you can go to be with people like you who love the same type of entertainment media you do. You might be a DC Comics fan, a Marvelite, or someone who tries to go against the grain and read titles from smaller or independent companies – but you still are among people like yourself when you enter comic book stores. You are still among your own and you are in your community.

Human Interaction

Comic book fans love to interact with other comic book fans. Digital comics will never be able to replicate or duplicate the interaction a comic book collector can have with a knowledgeable comic book store employee or with another fan met inside any of the comic book stores in the country. Digital comics take away that human bond and always negate the basic human need of gaining justification from others of what we are doing. The human interaction you gain with other comic book fans in YOUR type of community center is at the core of the importance of comic book stores.

Not Going Away

Digital comics are not going away anytime soon. You can ensure that the community center found inside comic book stores never goes away. I have met countless comic book fans over the years and I celebrate the bond I have with them. You should to.

Special C2E2 Deals for Zombie Fans

If you are a zombie fan heading to C2E2 next week (like me), you are going to wonder about the types of deals and exclusives geared towards fans of the shambling undead. Fear not my fiends, there are many surprises in store for fans of the type of creature revolutionized (accidently) by George Romero so many years ago.

Great zombie specials can be found at C2E2 this year

Great zombie specials can be found at C2E2 this year

Box O Zombies

If you have had a chance to check out the Box O Zombies game line, you know that the creatures in the line range from horrific to hysterical. If you find yourself at Booth 1018 at C2E2, make sure you take a look at Zombicbook Guy. This piece works with the iOS mobile game and will fit into any zombie collection. Zombicbook Guy is a con attendee that became infected with more than comic book fever.

Zombie Last Supper Poster

I think I am going to have to make room in my office for the Zombie Last Supper poster. It is exactly what it sounds like. It is a print of zombies feasting in the famous painting of The Last Supper. This will be available for sale at C2E2 at Booth O10 by Erik Arreaga.

Zombie Pop Vinyl

POP! Vinyl toys from Funko are the rage today. They line the shelves at comic book retailers and toy stores across the country. At Booth 1064, Fugitive Toys will have a special POP! The Walking Dead Vinyl Figure. Stop by to see (and/or purchase) the Tank Zombie Blood Splatter POP! Vinyl figure exclusive to this retailer.

Deadworld at C2E2

Are you a fan of Gary Reed’s Deadworld? If not, why not? Stop by his booth (O4) to check out the full line of Deadworld graphic novels. If you purchase one of these zombie masterpieces, you will receive a set of the Deadworld: War of the Dead promo cards. One of these will be signed by Gary. You can also purchase the cards separately for $3.99.

Bloody Rick Grimes and Dead Daryl

There is another special dealing with Funko’s POP! The Walking Dead Vinyls at C2E2 for fans of the comic and the TV show. Check out Harrison’s at Booth 153 for special Walking Dead Daryl and Rick Bloody exclusives. Grab the figures your friends wished they had.

Four Horseman Posters

Ok, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Shadows Over New York poster might be a stretch for a zombie fan at C2E2, but it should still be noted. Remember, many horror movies portray zombies are the heralds of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Others, state it is their curse. Stop by Booth P7 for these exclusive posters.

If you are a zombie fan heading to C2E2, you have so much to look forward to. Make sure you bring your walking shoes and a pocket fullocash.

The Best C2E2 Freebies for C2E2 2013

If you are planning on heading to Chicago next week, you might find it a daunting task to go through all of the pages and pages of deals to find the best C2E2 freebies. Worry not my friends as I have gone through the pages and talked with some of my friends in the industry to find you the best C2E2 freebies.

Can you find the best C2E2 freebies?

Can you find the best C2E2 freebies?

The Trend

I should start out with a slight digression to point out how it is sad that freebies are so hard to come by these days at comic book conventions. I remember the days (not too many years ago) when you could walk out of a comic book convention with armfuls of merchandise without spending a dime. I am happy to see vendors going through their stock to come up with C2E2 freebies. Hopefully the number of free offerings can grow in the future.

Power Up Scavenger Hunt

The most noticeable of the C2E2 freebies comes in the form of the Power Up Scavenger Hunt. If you download the Official C2E2 Mobile App, you can scan QR codes which will be scattered around the convention. Once you have unlocked the mystery phrase, head over to the Info Desk and whisper it to the attendant for a bago’swag.

258 West Authentic Signatures

Find your way to Booth 1454 for two C2E2 freebies. The good people at West Authentic Signatures will be passing out promo tradings cards picturing Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki).

Blick Art Materials

Do you think you can be one of the first 25 people to Booth 129 on one of the three days of the convention? If you are, Blick Art Materials will give you a free giveaway.

Gary Reed

If you purchase any Deadworld graphic novel from Gary Reed at Booth O4, you will receive a set of Deadworld: War of the Dead promo cards. There are ten cards in the set, and one of the cards will be signed by Gary himself! You can also purchase the promo card set for $3.99 without purchasing a novel (but you would be missing out on a great story).

Geek City Guide

Stop by Booth #222 and register for the hourly and daily drawings. The Geek City Guide will draw a name each hour of the convention and will draw one name a day for a grand prize. There is no reason why drawings and raffles should not count as C2E2 freebies.

Cat-LE Drivers

Talk to Kevin Bandt or Josh Filer over at Booth T14 about their comic Cat-LE Drivers. Issue #1 will be free during C2E2 so stop by before their stock runs out. This will be a limited print.

Leo’s Lions Den

Booth 1380 should be one of your first stops of the day if you want to snag all of the C2E2 freebies you can. The people at Leo’s Lions Den will be giving out a free comic to the first 100 customers each day.

Support Boston Comic Con, Support Boston, Support America

Tragedy has struck the Boston Marathon, the City of Boston, and the United States as a whole, but Boston Comic Con is committed to standing tall and hopes to prod the phoenix which will rise from the fires of fear and terror.

Support Boston Comic Con

Support Boston Comic Con

I received a note this morning from the organizers of Boston Comic Con which read:

We continue to work under the expectation that the convention will go on this weekend as scheduled. We hope to stand as an example of the resilience of Bostonians in the wake of this horrific tragedy. The many statements of solidarity we have received from fans and guests alike have been very encouraging.

We will have more information in the days ahead.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

If you are planning on attending Boston Comic Con, do not allow the fear which others attempt to spread keep you away. If you are considering attending Boston Comic Con, think harder about doing so to show your support of not only for the convention, but also for the city, the community, and the American way of life. Become a representation of the superheroes we have grown to love and become a shining force in the community in telling those which hope to cause terror that they will not win this week and they will never win in the future.

This should be your call to action. Light up the Boston Comic Con Facebook page (found here) with your support. Make sure you tweet about the convention and tag their Twitter page (found here). Together, the comic book community can send a message to the world that no fear can overcome the resiliency of good and that nobody can destroy the American will to carve its own future. Support Boston and always remember to stand tall when exposed to the devilish acts which jealousy, envy, and hate can bring.

Always Encourage Young Comic Book Readers

As comic book collectors and readers, we cannot forget the importance of encouraging young comic book readers. If we do not take steps right now to encourage another generation of readers, we are condemning our favorite entertainment medium.

The State of the Industry

The next time you walk into a comic book store, take a look at the other customers and note their ages. A majority of the customers will be between the ages of 25 and 45. Many of the modern comic book customers grew up in the 1980s and 1990s when comic book reading was peaking. Of course, there are readers who are much older, but there are not many who are younger. Our industry (probably due to the crashes in the 1990s) missed an entire generation of readers. We need to make sure this does not happen again and encourage potential young comic book readers.
Encourage young comic book readers

Encourage young comic book readers

Importance of Young Readers

Younger readers help to ensure the future of the industry. They are the ones who will be filling the stores in a decade or two if we can tap into their potential. They will be the ones who are going to g new money into the industry and help to ensure mics are still being printed well into our golden years. Personally, I want to continue to read new issues of Batman and The X-Men when by body is too decrepit to do anything else and encouraging young comic book readers is one of the ways I hope to do so.

The Joy of Encouraging Young Comic Book Readers

My daughter is 5, and looks forward to new comic books to add to her growing collection. I can guarantee she knows more superheroes than kids ten years older than her. Not only does she have an entertainment medium which does not involve technology, she has figured out another connection with her Daddy. She knows her Daddy loves comics and superheroes, and has allowed herself to be exposed to comics to get closer to me. As her father, I want every possible connection to her I can get.

Don’t Forget

As of this writing, Free Comic Book Day is only a matter of weeks away. The special day takes great measures to encourage young comic book readers and to invite more readers to the industry. This focus should not be forgotten throughout the rest of the year as it will help to grow the industry and ensure a future for the industry we have grown up with.

Is Your Comic Book Collection Too Large to Manage?

What should you do if your comic book collection becomes too large to manage? I have seen collections which have taken over people’s houses and others which cost particular collectors tons of money to keep in storage. If you are becoming overwhelmed by a collection, there are certain steps you should take to get your head above water before it is too late.

Comic Book Storage

Is your comic book collection too large to manage?

How Large is a Comic Book Collection too Large to Manage?

The statement, “a comic book collection which is too large to manage” is actually relative to each collector. I have seen people manage collections of over 100,000 issues without a problem while others struggle to keep a collection of around 5,000 issues in check. If you are struggling with your comic book collection, it is probably time for you to realize your collection might be too large to handle.

What is Your Focus?

The first step you need to take is to ask yourself “What is the focus of my collection?” Do you prefer to collect only Marvel titles? If so, what are you doing with all of those unread DC Comics titles? Is the focus of your collection mainly on horror comics? What should you do with all of those superhero titles? If the focus of your comic book collection is on a specific character or superhero, you should separate those issues which do not jive with the rest. A great start is to eliminate any titles from your comic book collection which do not click with the focus of the comic book collection.

What if there is No Focus?

Let’s say you are a general collector who just collects without a specific focus. Take a look through your collection for titles you really don’t care for. If you are not a Superman fan, go eliminate the Superman titles. If you are not interested in Silver Age comics, eliminate those from your comic book collection.

Eliminate Doubles

For the most part, you should eliminate doubles from your comic book collection when it becomes too large to manage.  Of course, if you have reader copies so that you can keep your expensive comics safe, you should keep those. Outside of reader copies, eliminate all of your doubles and triples to help bring your collection to a manageable level.

Transfer to Trades and Omnibuses

Trades and omnibuses take up less room and can eliminate the need to keep chunks of comics if your comic book collection is overwhelming you. Instead of having the clutter of an entire run of X-Factor, I realized it made more sense to simply collect the Marvel Essential X-Factor books. I was able to liquidate a hundred comics from my comic book collection in exchange for 5 books.

Eliminate the Dollar Comics

You know you have dollar comics taking up important space in your collection. Eliminate the low-ballers to make room for those comics which will work as an investment.

There are many ways to manage a comic book collection which has become too large for you to manage. All you have to do is realize your collection is taking over your life and eliminate those issues which do not fit.

Motor City Nightmares – Why You Should Attend

When you saw this headline, you might have wondered if I was veering from the usual type of article by promoting the Motor City Nightmares horror convention. This could not be further from the truth. Not only are the convention and convention promoters friends of the store, the show has something to offer even to comic book collectors who are not die-hard horror fans. As you read on, you will understand why you should hear about Motor City Nightmares on a comic book site and why I would be suggesting you give it a shot.

Never cut in line at Motor City Nightmares

Never cut in line at Motor City Nightmares

Motor City Nightmares

Motor City Nightmares 2013 will be held at Sheraton Detroit Novi Hotel (in Novi) from April 26-28 and it is both a horror convention and film festival. I covered the event in 2011 for another site and had a blast as it is one of  the best horror convention to attend. Lucky for us, Motor City Nightmares is a Detroit area horror convention so we do not have far to go. I would be attending this year if it were not for the fact I will be out of town on those dates.

Who’s Coming?

Danielle Harris - 'Nuff said

Danielle Harris – ‘Nuff said

There will be over two dozen celebrities signing autographs and mingling with fans throughout the weekend. Some of the highlights include Michael Rooker (Merle from The Walking Dead), Doug Bradley (Pinhead) James Russo (who is making his first horror con appearance), Kane Hodder (Jason), Sid Haig, Danielle Harris, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Ken Foree, Dee Wallace, Michael Berryman, and John Russo.

The Parties

A definite highlight of the Motor City Nightmares horror convention weekend would have to be the parties. You will have the chance to share a drink next to (or with) celebrities attending the show. This is a unique opportunity to see the celebrities with their hair down. There will also be performances by such bans as First Jason, The Gutter Ghouls, and The Casket Bastards. The Casket Bastards are led by my buddy Davey Taylor who used to be known as Ded Dave (see shirt I occasionally wear in the store). The Casket Bastards are awesome live.

Yes, I am getting choked out by Kane Hodder at Motor City Nightmare

The Vendors

The convention hall at the Sheraton Novi is filled with vendors selling all types of wares during Motor City Nightmares. If you are a collector who like to find deals on horror comics (like myself), this is the place to be. I added many issues to my collection when I attended a few years ago. Don’t worry, there are also tons of vendors selling non-comic items if you are looking for the right horror movie toy or memento.

The Film Festival

Part of the floor at Motor City Nightmares

Part of the floor at Motor City Nightmares

The Motor City Nightmares Film Festival is a great way to break up your convention day and check out films from up-and-comers or from smaller production houses. As of this writing, the listing of films was not up yet, but should be soon. Many of the films show at multiple times in multiple auditoriums on the property, so you might not end up having to miss one for another.

Your Option

If you are looking for something to do during the days of April 26-28, I suggest checking out Motor City Nightmares. Even if you are not a die-hard fan of horror, you are going to find something to spike your interest. If you are a die-hard horror movie fan who is going to be in town during the event, I suggest attending. You can thank me later.

For more information, check out the Motor City Nightmares site by following this link.

Comic Book Collecting Tips: Numerical Order

One of the comic book collecting tips which I cannot stress enough is how important it is to have your comic books stored in numerical order. Not only does this help you as a collector, it also helps any store owner you take your comic books to with the intention of trading or selling. If you are a convention vendor reading this article, these reasons apply to you as well as they will help you to move more product.

Comic Book Storage

Comic Book Storage

Your Collection

If you care at all about your comic book collection, you need to store you comics in numerical order. This is one of those comic book collecting tips you should never ignore. If you are going to search through your collection, it is much easier to find issues if they are stored in numerical order. You can gain a better grasp of the issues you need, as you simply have to find where the gaps are in your runs. If a particular issue begins to spike, such as Spawn #9 (the introduction of Angela) is now, you can easily find the copy in your storage boxes.

Selling Your Collection

When looking through a box at his or her store, comic book store owners are going to hope that your collection is in numerical order. Chances are good, if the buyer is “in the know,” he or she is going to skim your collection for certain key issues. If those issues are found, you might be looking at extra money. Those can be found easier if you follow one of the most basic of comic book collecting tips.

Convention Vendors and Comic Book Collecting Tips

As a collector, I am more likely to pass convention vendors by which do not have their comics in numerical order. I understand that people look through the boxes and the order can become messed up. As someone who has been collecting for three decades, I can tell the difference between customer negligence and seller negligence. Do everything you can as a vendor to follow as many of the basic comic book collecting tips as possible, especially this one. If I am looking through a box of yours at a convention, chances are good that I am looking for key issues. Make sure I can find them.

A Comic Book Convention Map is More Important Than You Think

If you knew how important a comic book convention map can be, you would carry one with you the from the moment the con opened until the last minute. There are many benefits to carrying a comic book convention map that you never thought about. It will save you time, possibly save you money, and might even make you a little more popular with other convention attendees.

Shameless plug – Never forget your comic book convention map.

How a Comic Book Convention Map Saves You Time

How many times have you had to ask for directions at a comic book convention? How many times have you been around the entire floor three times trying to find a particular dealer or your favorite comic creator? By carrying a comic book convention map, you can save yourself that wasted time. You can know exactly where the next panel is being held that you want to see and where the next big event is taking place.

How a Comic Book Convention Map Can Save You Money

While at C2E2 this year, I will be looking for a few specific items. As I stroll around the convention, I will be marking off certain vendors’ booths on my map to remind me where they are located. These marks will signify who is selling the items I am looking for. I might also mark the dollar amount the items are listed for. This will save me from buying the most expensive versions of the items I want and will cue me in to where I can get the best deals.

How a Comic Book Convention Map Can Make You Popular

If people notice you are carrying around a comic book convention map, they are going to ask you for directions. While this might be annoying at times, what happens when the sexy cosplayer asks you for directions? You already have your icebreaker. What happens when a comic creator asks for your help? What types of quick conversations will you strike up? I have even seen people at bars near a convention hall pop out a map to help weary convention attendees and gotten invited for a beer. The possibilities are endless.

But I Don’t Have Room for a Comic Book Convention Map

Really? Seriously? You can carry around a stack of thirty comics but don’t have room for one piece of paper? I did not say you needed to carry around the program. Rip the map out of the booklet and fold it up nicely and put it in your pocket. Problem solved.

Comic Book Convention Hotels: Stay at the Main

As someone who has not only attended conventions, but covered conventions for major media outlets, it is always best to stay at main comic book convention hotels. While the cost is typically higher than staying at a satellite hotel, the benefits pay off considerably.

What Are Main Comic Book Convention Hotels?

Comic book conventions will typically make deals with various surrounding hotels. There will be one hotel, though, which the convention will house the celebrities and top artists who are appearing at the show. This is usually the nicest hotel in the area, or the closest starred hotel to the convention hall. In the cases of a convention which is held at a hotel convention center, the main hotel is the hosting facility.

The Celebrity Opportunities at Main Comic Book Convention Hotels

Chances are good that you are going to stand in a line to meet your favorite celebrity or comic book creator. You might be paying a dear penny for a signature, sketch, or a picture with whoever you came to see. What would you pay to sit down and have a drink that that person? What would you give to have the opportunity for a private conversation with the celebrity or comic book creator? Staying at main comic book convention hotels offers some these opportunities.

Opportunities with Vendors at Main Comic Book Convention Hotels

Instead of speaking with a celebrity or comic book creator, you might find yourself speaking with a vendor who has a booth set up at the convention. Many of the dealers try to stay at main comic book convention hotels for various reasons ranging from wanting to see celebrities themselves to wanting to schmooze with those which can afford to stay where they want. Sitting down with a vendor might open a door for a discount the next day at the booth or you might find a dealer who has a specific issue you are looking for.

Main Comic Book Convention Hotels Which are Hosting

If you are staying at a hosting hotel, you are making the right move. In this these cases, the main comic book hotels are the properties hosting. Sometimes, conventions give deals to those staying at the hotel. Even if they do not, you are still going to have the opportunity to sit down with celebrities and creators and vendors and anyone else who happens by if you are outgoing enough. Plus, you have the opportunity of dropping off your purchases in your room if they are getting bulky or stop in to take a quick nap or shower. The possibilities are endless.

Comic Book Convention Deals Will be Back Eventually

Where have the comic book convention deals gone in the last few years? Do you remember the day (not too long ago) when we could find graphic novels for $2-$3 at comic book conventions? Do you remember being able to pick up a short box full of comics for less than the price of con admission? Let me take a moment to explain why those days are now gone – but will come back in the future.

Comic Book Convention Deals: The Way it Was

A few short years ago, there were fewer shows around the country and comic book conventions deals were easy to come by. Local dealers might be at a show and not have another one for a few months. Instead of hauling all of their stock back to a store or warehouse, many dealers would do everything they could to dump product to make room for new product. This need to rotate stock caused the great comic book convention deals we remember.

Comic Book Convention Deals: Why it Was

A few years ago, the comic book convention market was becoming dominated by Wizard World shows. Various companies were doing what they could to buy up smaller conventions in the hopes of opening solitary conventions in various markets. The attempted expansion and contraction of the market caused for Wizard World to have to cut the number of shows they produced and put other convention promotion companies out of business. With less shows to potentially make money at, dealers tried to rotate stock as much as possible and were willing to give greater deals.

Comic Book Convention Deals: NOW

The number of cons skyrocketed last year, and is doing the same this year. Instead of con season typically being about 7 months long, it is almost 12 months. I am just waiting for someone to schedule a con during the week between Christmas and New Year’s. With another show always around the corner, dealers do not have enough time to rotate stock. Much of what they have at the current show will have to be brought to the next show to fill up the tables.

Comic Book Convention Deals: Will They Return?

I have a feeling we will see the return of the infamous comic book convention deals sooner than later. The comic book convention market will eventually thin as smaller shows fall to the side of larger shows and competition leads to attrition. As the number of shows decreases, the number of comic book convention deals will increase as dealers find they need to turn stock again.

Review of Gem City Comic Con 2013

Gem City Comic Con 2013 has come to a close and I have to admit that I enjoyed myself. I am already looking forward to attending next year.

Gem City Comic Con

Gem City Comic Con

The Location

Gem City Comic Con 2013 was held at the Nutter Center at Wright State University. The stadium in which the convention was held was large enough to fit all of the dealers, signers, and other events without having too much room (which might create dead spaces). The aisles were spaced well and allowed for full movement. Even guests with strollers or wheelchairs found the conventions floor easily-accessible.

There were other events going on in the Nutter Center, such as cheerleading practice and practices for some of the basketball teams participating in the NCAA Tournament games being held nearby. The other events being held in the center did not apparently conflict in any way with Gem City Comic Con, and a nod should be given to Wright State University for proper event and logistics planning. I could not complain about the fact that there was free W-Fi in the building.

The Deals

While there were many deals to be had, I felt that some of the dealers were holding back. This could be because of how C2E2 in Chicago is only weeks away. Other dealers were almost giving product away in order to clear out their storage for the stock coming in for the big con next month. I was happy to find some deals, but they had to be searched for as they were not jumping out at you. $5 or 40% off graphic novels could be found at many dealer’s tables along with standard retail prices on many of the key issues typically found at cons. Just make sure to keep your eyes open for the deals.

Gaming

A corner of the convention was filled with Magic players. Their event did not conflict in any way (that I noticed) with the main con. I like to see cons which invite fans of other genres in order to increase foot traffic.

Food

I might always be harsh on conventions about their food offerings. The only food in the convention hall for general guests was from a center food booth. I picked up a pack of Reece’s Pieces and a 20oz pop for $6.75. People were eating the food from there out of desperation. Some workers did deliver food to artists and vendors, so at least there was another option for some onsite. Since the event was held on a college campus, outside food options were plenty as chains love to build by colleges. I just wish there were other options inside the event.

Staff

I have always said that if a staff member does not know the answer to a question, he or she should know where to get the answer in a prompt fashion. While this should be the norm, it typically is not for comic book conventions. The staff at Gem City Comic Con, though, had most of the answers and were not afraid to ask someone else if they did not know. I have to compliment the con organizers for taking the important step of making sure the staff was informed and had lines of communication open.

Traffic

As more and more comic book convention move towards stocking their celebrity list with washed-up actors, former pro wrestlers, and ex-Playboy models, someone might think a comics-forward convention like Gem City Comic Con might not have much traffic. This could not be further from the truth. Traffic on Saturday was strong with dealers have few chances to sit down early in the day. Sunday was much lighter, but I would venture to say that the impending snowstorm had more to do with the decreased traffic than any other factor.

As I stated before, I am looking forward to Gem City Comic Con 2014. If you have the chance to head down to Dayton next year, I would suggest making the trip. You are going to have fun and you are going to be glad you came.

On one final note, if you are in the area, stop at One Eyed Jacks. The bar has some good local beer and great food. Anyone who is a regular reader of this site knows how much I love a beer. The Thai peanut wings were among the best wings I have ever had in my life! If I had known about this place when I was a travel writer, I might have written an entire article just on the wings.

Digital Death Part III: Digital Comics and Collecting

My fellow comic book collectors – we are being devalued by Marvel and DC Comics in their push to increase sales of digital comics. Not only will digital comics eventually decrease the comic book market, the push for digital comics proves the Big 2 could care less about our passion for their products. How long will we stand for this [Censored] insolence? How long will we allow digital comics to survive?

The death of the comic book industry will be caused by digitally downloading comic books.

The death of the comic book industry will be caused by digitally downloading comic books.

How Easily Marvel and DC Comics Forget

There are two types of backs in which the comic book market has been built. Initially, it was built upon the backs of comic book readers who stood in line to pay a matter of cents for the newest issue of Action Comics. In my lifetime, the backs of comic book collectors were tapped as the Big 2 realized many of us were keeping boxes of comics to preserve them for the ages and that the values of back issues were climbing.

The Early [Censored] Ups

Marvel and DC Comics caused crashes in the past by trying to exploit either the reader’s market or the collector’s market. The comic book publishers [Censored] the market in the 1990s by trying to produce as many crappy titles as possible to exploit readers and put special covers on every issue in an attempt to exploit the collectors. Their greed made our favored market a [Censored] joke and the future was in jeopardy. Since the market is currently up in a big way, those greedy [Censored] are trying to figure out another way to exploit. They are looking for another back of support.

Who They are Going After

You could speculate about Marvel and DC Comics going after current readers with the push to digital comics, but you would be dead wrong. You know that [Censored] hipster douche you see sitting at Starbucks every morning who thinks the world should revolve around him? The world of comics is moving to revolve around him. Digital comics, Marvel AR, and whatever piece of [Censored] DC shovels out to compete with it, are all geared at the grab-a-trend hipster bastard who will drop money on the latest trend. The biggest problem with grab-a-trend hipsters is they do not stay around long. Wake the [Censored] Marvel and DC, we have been around for years and you are turning your backs on us!

This content is censored.

This content is censored.

What Will Happen

The issue of Spider-Man you have been keeping safe in order to pass on to your kids one day – it is going to be worthless if digital comics completely take over as everyone will have read it and there is no draw to hold the original. All that money you spent to have your comic graded will be lost as people scoff at physical comics as they will be passé. All of the time you spent collecting will have been wasted as people could give a [Censored] about your collection.

What Can We Do?

Don’t you think for a [Censored] minute that there is nothing you can do. Support your local comic book stores instead of digitally downloading comics. When Marvel and DC Comics tell you to check out the latest digital download, raise your voices and tell them to go [Censored] themselves. If you are sitting at a comic book convention panel, make sure your voice is heard. Tell other comic book collectors to do the same. The only way we can keep our collections valued, and keep ourselves valued by the Big 2, is to tell them that we are mad as hell, and we are not going to take it anymore!

Gem City Comic Con 2013 Preview

My want list is ready, my bags are ready to be packed, my passes are in order, and I am ready to head to Gem City Comic Con! As of this writing, Gem City Comic Con is only days away (March 23-24, 2013), and I could not be more excited about the show. It will be a great start to my con season.

Gem City Comic Con

Gem City Comic Con

What Makes Gem City Comic Con Different?

As a comics-forward comic book convention, the guest list is made up of comic book creators and not the former pro-wrestlers, ex-Playboy models, and washed-up actors you might find at other shows which consider themselves as comic book conventions. Instead of the focus being on the media, the focus is placed on the fans who live, eat, and sleep comic books.

The Gem City Comic Con Guests

The Gem City Comic Con 2013 guest list includes over 20 comic book creators including Howard V. Chaykin, Stan Sakai, Tim Seeley, Joe Staton, Joe Corroney, Dan Parent and Angel Medina. Pheonix Kasai, the cosplay specialist, will also be on hand with over 30 up-and-coming creators in artist’s alley.

Will There Be Events at Gem City Comic Con?

The promoters of Gem City Comic Con have scheduled dozens of panels, discussions, and other events to give you an opportunity to rest your weary con-floor-worn feet. There will also be a charity auction and cosplay costume contest. Regular readers – I will do everything I can to get you some great cosplay pictures from the show.

I know Dayton, Ohio is a hike from the Detroit area, but I suggest you take a look at the show if you are free this coming weekend. I am looking forward to seeing many of my friends from the con circuit and making new ones as well. Of course, I am going to be scouring the tables to find the deals dreams are made of. I hope to see you there.

Comic Book Dollar Boxes and Uncanny X-Men #317

This article is the first in a series which explores the hidden gems in comic book dollar boxes. Comic book conventions and many comic book stores will fill tables with comic book dollar boxes to lighten stockroom loads. There are many hidden gems to be found inside if you know what to look for. This edition will take a look at Uncanny X-Men #317.

Uncanny X-Men #317

Uncanny X-Men #317

Comic Book Dollar Boxes: Phalanx

One of the most popular X-Men storylines of the mid-1990s involved the attempt by the Phalanx (Phalanx Covenant) to assimilate mutants into their cyber-organic collective. Theoretically, success would have made the Phalanx the most powerful collective body in the multiverse. The storyline began in Uncanny X-Men #305, but the importance of #317 will be mentioned in a moment. I have seen times in which an entire run of the Phalanx storyline can be completed by perusing one comic book dollar box.

Comic Book Dollar Boxes: Skin

Comic book fans have an affinity for issues which introduce characters. Skin, a mutant, is introduced in Uncanny X-Men #317. His real name is Angelo Espinoza, and he was one of four mutants who were kidnapped by the Phalanx for testing. He had over six feet of extra skin on his body which he could manipulate into various forms at will. M, Husk, and the mutant mentioned next were the other characters abducted in the issue.

Read Skin’s bio on Marvel’s website

Comic Book Dollar Boxes: Blink

Blink (Clarice Ferguson) is the other character introduced for the first time in Uncanny X-Men #317 as an abductee of the Phalanx, but she has gone on to greater heights in the Marvel Universe than Skin. She has the ability to teleport herself, or large groups, at a moment’s notice. Her unusual look which includes lilac skin and pupil-less eyes, and pink “beauty marks,” have made her a favored character of some collectors. She has been a part of many of the major Marvel crossovers throughout the years since her introduction.

Read Blink’s bio on Marvel’s website

Comic Book Dollar Boxes: Current Importance

It was recently announced that the beautiful actress Fan Bingbing will portray Blink in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” The movie is sure to raise more interest in the character as the movie gets closer. Once the movie hits, I am sure there will be few issues of Uncanny X-Men #317 left in any of the comic book dollar boxes in the country. If you find Uncanny X-Men #317 while looking through comic book dollar boxes – buy it.

The lesson to be learned is to never pass up on comic book dollar boxes because you never know what you might find.

Comic Book Collector’s Guide to Travelling

Comic book collectors look forward to trips to their local comic book store for new gems to add to their collections, but what about when they are on vacation? During my time as a writer, I have worked as a travel writer and found myself all over the country. There are certain tips I have for any comic book collector going on vacation.

Silver Age comics

Silver Age comics

Localized Market

While travelling around the country, I have figured out a few secrets of the industry. What is hot and what is not in the comic book market can sometimes depend on where you are in the country. Comics which are retailing for $50 in Detroit comic book stores might only be retailing for $10 in Las Vegas or in Florida. I always hit the stores in other cities to see which issues I can pick up for less.

Local Gems

When comic book publishing companies are starting out, they find they have an uphill battle in getting their titles on the racks of retailers across the country. They often start out by getting their titles on the racks of their local comic book stores. You might have the chance of picking up an issue created by an out-of-town publisher which could increase in value as word of the title crosses the country.

Signatures

Some comic book collectors will go out of their way to get a copy of their favorite comic signed by one of the creators. The signature market is odd because what has high value in one market might have vary little importance in another part of the country. Sometimes, signatures of local creators sell for less in their hometown than in other parts of the country. Other creators see their signatures go for a premium around the city where they grew up. The only way to see for sure is to head into a comic book store while you are travelling.

What I Bring

I always check to see where the local comic book stores are when I am traveling. I keep some bags and boards in my suitcase so I have them if I visit a shop which does not take the extra care with their issues. Depending on how many shops I will hit while on vacation, I will take between three and ten bags and boards to make sure I am prepared.

Comic book collectors are a strange bunch, but we should always be prepared for what we might find while out on the road.

Digital Death Part II: Dark Reason Behind Digital Comics

In Digital Death Part I: Illegally Downloading Comic Books, we discussed the dangers of downloading comics and the negative impacts on the publishing companies (especially the smaller ones), the distributors, and the comic book stores. In this installment, we will look at another side of digital comics and the negative impact on the market. We will look at the secret intent of digital comics which Marvel and DC don’t want you to think about and what this intent will lead to.

The death of the comic book industry will be caused by digitally downloading comic books.

The death of the comic book industry will be caused by digitally downloading comic books.

What If Digital Comics Took Over?

What if we all switched tomorrow to digital comics? Where would that leave the comic book stores and distributors like Diamond? There would not be a need for them in the end. There would not be a need for the printed pages since they were all digitally rendered. Marvel and DC would love to have the opportunity to cut out levels of distribution and eventually sell directly to the consumer. The Big 2 need their profits and if it means they would put over two thousand small businesses out of business, what do they care? What do they care if digital comics could cause for tens of thousands of people being added to the unemployment lines if they (Marvel and DC) can make more money?

Price and Cost of Digital Comics

Think about the profits Marvel and DC would gain if they did not have to give a piece of the action to the comic book stores and to the distributors. You might be saying “Well, the digital comics I have been buying are only $0.99. Marvel and DC can’t be making that much money.” Do you really think the Big 2 would leave the price of digital comics at $0.99 if the other levels of distribution were eliminated? Once the levels of distribution were eliminated, the price of the digital comics would go up to the price of printed versions, or higher.

Where Does this Leave Comixology?

Of course, Comixology and other digital distributors of comics are making some money now, but what is going to happen if Marvel and DC are able to eliminate physical distributors and comic book stores? Digital distributors would be next as the Big Two march towards complete domination of the market and sell the digital comics to you directly through their websites and apps.

Where Does this Leave Smaller Publishers?

Smaller publishers fight to get as much of the market as possible. Most of their push comes in the comic book stores as workers introduce you to titles from smaller companies you did not consider. Business also comes from Previews, which is published by Diamond. How long with Previews be around if Diamond was forced to go belly-up because of the domination of digital comics? The smaller companies would be casualties of the digital comics war between Marvel and DC.

Illegal Downloads

Again, we have to revert back to illegally downloading comics. With more digital comics out on the market, the downloaders would take their piece of the pie. The stage could be set for a battle where Marvel would have to team with DC to ensure the illegal downloaders did not completely kill the market. Funny, the Big Two would have to fight to keep the market they are killing alive.

Gone!

Gone would be the days of walking into a comic book store to peruse the shelves for new titles. Gone would be the discussions with comic book store workers about their suggestions. Gone would be the physical locations where you would go to talk about comics with other comic book fans. Gone would be the excitement of going through a long box at a store to see what hidden gems you can get for cheap.

Gone would be the experience of looking at a stack of new comics and trying to decide which to look at first. Gone would be the smell of a new comic and feeling the glossy pages on your fingers as you open it to see what the creators had in store. Gone would be the experience of reading a comic book…just so Marvel and DC could make a few extra dollars an issue.

The future of the industry is yours to decide. Will you stand there and do nothing like the Watcher, or will you jump in and say “I’m as mad as Hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!?”

Views on Marvel’s SXSW Announcements

With all the action associated with the WonderWorldComics March Madness Contest, I have not had time to discuss Marvel’s announcements at SXSW over the weekend. There are four videos which have the comic book community talking. Follow this link to see the videos.

Captain America's Shield

Captain America’s Shield

Marvel Infinite Comics

Marvel is introducing a new type of digital comics which you peruse by swiping on a digital device. According to the video, it appears that you progress the frames or add images to the frames to progress the comic by swiping. My EX Level (Excitement Level) is at about a 2 out of ten on this one.

What bothers me most about this is when the one presenter in the video states “I usually buy my comics at the store…” Marvel is finally making a statement about the hidden goal of digital comics. Why does Marvel want to introduce another alternative to purchasing comics in the stores? Read Digital Death Part II to find out why.

Marvel’s Project Gamma

The next Marvel announcement at SXSW was Project Gamma. Adaptive audio for comic books? Really? In the first two announcements, Marvel is introducing or hinting at two types of shtick to get people to read digital comics? I don’t need adaptive audio to immerse myself in a comic book. I need a good comic book. I need strong writing and beautiful artwork which portrays characters I care about. Why don’t comic book companies ever remember this? Marvel’s Project Gamma has my EX Level at about a -4 out of 10.

Marvel AR

Ok, Marvel AR appears to be interesting as it will give you behind the scenes interviews and information about the week’s comics. My Ex Level is at about 5 on this one. As long as they don’t revert to endless skits here, it should be fine. Interviews about inspiration and what the creators wanted to deliver with the comics could increase readership of certain comics as readers gain extra knowledge about titles they had not considered. If Marvel does not drop the ball in the first few episodes or offerings (which companies have the tendency to do), this could be pretty damn awesome.

Marvel’s Earth’s Mightiest Show

If you say the name Blair Butler, my Ex Level automatically goes to a 9. Sorry, I have a nerd crush on her and have for a long time. The comedian, and comic book geek, will host a show which will explore the Marvel universe through interviews and comedy. I have followed her career since her early days as a correspondent on G4 and hope Marvel can make this work. I will be watching this – even if it is horrible – simply because I like Blair Butler. Her style of comedy might turn some viewers off. Her comedy is clean, but it can be a little unusual. This was my favorite announcement of the weekend.
