Screening of Compound Fracture at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

Prior to my days of writing about comics, I wrote about horror movies for multiple websites. I always jumped at the opportunity to see a movie if there was a special screening with creators or actors. These screenings gave me the unique opportunity to pick the brains of those in the know of the movie. This weekend at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, you will have the unique opportunity to do so with the special screening of Compound Fracture.

Creators and actors Tyler Mane and Renae Geerlings will be on hand along with the evildoer of the movie, Derek Mears. Head here to learn more.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Only Days Away

Only days until Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and I get more excited with every passing day. As you might have noticed, there have not been as many posts as usual on WonderWorldComic.com. Some of you know I am on staff for the convention and have been working long hours to make sure everything on my end is order.

If you have the opportunity, look for me at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this weekend. At the after parties, I will have extra time for you to pick my brain, or tell me about perspectives we have put forth on this site (positively or negatively). I look forward to seeing many of you this weekend.

During Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and in the following days, I will be posting news, interviews, and observations from the convention. Kelly will be posting as well.

After the convention, we will be announcing some new additions to the WonderWorldComics.com family. Looking forward to that.

In case you have not noticed, Kelly will be running a panel on Sunday. I hope many of you come out to support her:

Gender in the Comics

Saturday 6:15 pm Regency A

Exploring the representations of “alternative” sexualities in comics specifically in DC and Marvel. The focus will be on the implications of these representations…what does it mean for the LGBT? Hosted by Kelly Jackson, a graduate student of American Literature and Culture. Her most recent research project is concerned with themes of colonialism as they relate to Captain America.

#DetroitFanfare Official Hashtag of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

From the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con website:

“#DetroitFanfare is officially a go! What is #DetroitFanfare? It is the official hashtag of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

If you are going to be talking about the convention on social media, please use the #DetroitFanfare hashtag. That way we do not drown Twitter and Facebook with fifty different variations of name in hashtag form.

We are looking forward to entertaining you all weekend long!”

I think it is a good idea that there is an “official” hashtag for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this year. I have seen many conventions in the past where people are posting about the convention using every variation of the convention name possible. Uniformity can help the convention gain more popularity and get any news coming from the convention out faster.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night Preview

Detroit Fanfare is just over a week away and I want to take a look at why you should attend Friday. Some of you might overlook the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night, but should not.

detroit-fanfareDetroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night

The Friday Preview Night is open to anyone with a weekend pass. The convention is only open from 6:00pm-9:00pm. There are also many events happening once the convention floor doors close.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night Events

Most of the convention-long events are opening on Friday including the convention floor, the 24 hour game room, and tabletop gaming. After the convention floor closes for the night, even more fun begins.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night After Events

The Shel Dorf Awards and Party will be taking place at 10:00pm. This is not only open to nominees and other industry figures, convention goers may attend as well.  You have the opportunity to sit at the same table with media and industry guests.

The Deadworld Zombie Walk will begin at 9:00pm. This is a fun event to participate in or watch. Immediately following, the Deadworld Zombie After Party will take place near the pool. There will be a DJ and dance floor. The Deadworld Zombie Costume Contest will take place at 11:30pm.

A sing-along showing of Little Shop of Horrors will take place at 11:30. Once you are done, you can attend either the Shel Dorf Awards Party or the Deadworld Zombie After Party.

Interesting Benefits of Attending the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Friday Preview Night

Friday night has less traffic than the rest of the weekend. If you are planning on being at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con for the entire weekend, Friday is a great way to ramp up your energy levels. You can also have a better chance of seeing an industry or media guest up close. With less people around, they are sure you have an extra minute to speak with you.

The Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Preview Night also gives you the opportunity to check out the deals and shop around the convention floor. It is a great time to gauge everything for sale so you can decide which items or comics should enter your collection. The lessoned crowds also helps you to determine the best ways around the convention and a better idea of the overall layout of this year’s show. The addition of the other side of the hotel means there is much more Detroit Fanfare Comic Con than in past years. Give yourself the extra time to check it out.

To learn more about what is taking place at this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and to purchase your advance tickets, check out the website here.

Volunteers Still Needed for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con

The staff of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con still need volunteers for this year’s convention. If you volunteer, you will receive a bunch of goodies for your time including a free pass for the event, food, a t-shirt, a con-exclusive variant, and other comics. Follow this link to volunteer.

Thoughts on Various New York Comic Con Announcements

New York Comic Con has come and gone, and there were a ton of announcements this year. These are some of my thoughts on the announcements this year.

new-york-comic-con1There will be a new My Little Pony Series next year from IDW Publishing. I like the idea as the new series will probably bring more children to comic book reading and collecting.

A crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joe is also coming next year. I have mixed emotions about this as I have seen the idea before and see it as a shortcoming since the military is effectively powerless against the giant machines of Transformers.

Punisher #1, Elektra #1, New Warriors #1, Black Widow #1, Captain Marvel #1, Silver Surfer #1, Ghost Rider #1, Iron Patriot #1 and All New Invaders are all coming. Only one of these comics were on the top of my list for new comics for Marvel, but I will take it. Ghost Rider was on my top list, and happy to see another Dark Universe character come out. Punisher is something I will definitely be looking forward to. I will have to talk to Christopher Yost about his New Warriors #1 when I see him next week at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con.

Pictures are emerging of Michael Cudlitz as Abraham on The Walking Dead. He looks good in the role. The rest of the group are coming in as well. Looking forward to the additional members as they are some of my favorites from the comic.

Some new Avengers series coming out from Marvel. I thought we already had enough…but we can go with it.

The Crow will be back for IDW. I already knew that – but I don’t give spoilers.

Kevin Smith is going to do a little writing on Batman. I will have to read it, but will hope that it is not like his last handful of movies. I will also hope that Batman does not take to fart jokes.

Zach Whedon is going to write a follow-up of Serenity. That should be interesting. I am hoping the story does not go off the main path.

Stephanie Brown is coming back to the DC Comics Universe. Meh, never a fan…sorry.

I hope New York Comic Con is the only convention we ever hear about with RFID chips and Twitter takeovers. That will discourage fans from coming to conventions.

Betty and Veronica are leaving the Archie Universe? Why do I simply see this as a way to get temp readers? Will they be gone for a year just to make a triumphant return to get temp readers again? Removing staple characters is one thing if a lineup changes every few years. Not after decades.

It looks like The Question will finally get his own series in DC Comics according to a panel at New York Comic Con. It is about time. You can’t really have a Trinity if you are going to ignore one of the characters in it.

Robert Kirkman announced Outcast which will be The Walking Dead for exorcism. I think I will give it a try. Happily another writer will be on the project. I think Kirkman is spread too thin as it is.

FF and Fantastic Four are ending in January. I am sure Fantastic Four will continue on somehow. Again, it is not good to get away from staples. We will see what happens.

George Romero is bringing Empire of the Dead out with both vampires and zombies. NotLD is one of my favorite movies of all time and the original Dead Trilogy are tops in my book. I am a little nervous about Romero getting into unchartered territory especially since I did not like his last few movies.

I am a little discouraged with New York Comic Con as there were not any earth-shattering announcements for me which have me popping hard outside of the new titles from Marvel. Out of those new Marvel titles, though, two have me more excited than the rest. Hopefully, we have more great news to tell in the next few weeks.

NYCC Tweets – My Thoughts on the Subject

I am discouraged by the fact that the biggest talk coming out of New York Comic Con this year is about the NYCC tweets. Multiple fans have complained that their Twitter accounts were “hijacked” by the convention and posts were made without approval.

new-york-comic-con1What Happened?

Apparently, the badges for NYCC have RFID chips in them which can link to fan’s social media accounts. The issue comes in the fine print in which fans sign over the ability to post to social media. The NYCC tweets are made by the convention and appear that the fans in question are enthusiastic about being at the convention. The convention claims that the NYCC tweets are something which the fans in questions opted in for. Fans are not excited.

If This Happened to Me

If I were at a convention or event at the promoters somehow took over my account, I would not be happy at all. I hope for the sake of the convention circuit and lifestyle that this does not become a popular trend. Hopefully, the anger over the NYCC tweets sends a message not only to NYCC, but to every convention and event around the country about taking over social media and small print.

All Autographs $25 or Less for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is only two weeks and one day away, but there is something I think you should know about autographs at the event. You don’t have to worry about paying huge fees to get autographs this year.

The highest autograph fee for this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is $25. That is much lower than the $45-$60 we have all seen at other conventions around the country. It will be nice to get some good autographs this year without paying an arm and a leg.

Specific Guests

As readers already know, this site has covered Brian O’Halloran (Clerks), so he will be autographing free over the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con weekend. Tyler Mane does not charge anything for a photo is you purchase an autograph from him. As you know, if you have been to a comic book convention before, most comic book creators don’t charge anything for an autograph.

Instead of spending all of your money on autographs, you have money left to spend on comics, a room, or food. Don’t forget to eat!

NYCC: Has Image Already Won?

I have to feel sorry for more publishers at New York Comic Con this weekend because it appears that Image is going to walk away with the win as being the most talked about publisher at the convention. How couldn’t they be? The Walking Dead #115 is easily the highest-selling comic of the year and The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere is this weekend. When you look at those two items, it just makes the other publishers (even the Big 2) look silly.

Sure

Sure, DC Comics is going to be able to push how it has the best month in September, but the clouds of Image’s week and the Villaim Month allocation are going to hang over the company’s figurative head. Marvel can point to Infinity and how the series is putting up huge numbers, but one issue from a regular series just screamed past the House of Ideas. If the Big 2 can’t compete with the week Image is having with The Walking Dead comic and The Walking Dead TV series, how can the smaller companies compete?

New York Comic Con is the second biggest comic book convention in the world. If Image can manage to be the talk of the town every year going into NYCC, how long will it be until we are talking about Image being one of the top two publishers of comics?

WWC at New York Comic Con!

Hey everyone! Many of you have asked if I will be at New York Comic Con this year. Sadly, I will not be. My nephew and the love of his life are getting married this weekend and my wife and my sister have told me that they would rather I be at the wedding than out gallivanting in the Big Apple with tens of thousands of people who share many of my interests. You know I am not one to back away from a fight – but I back away from fights with my wife and sister as much as possible.

new-york-comic-con1Don’t Worry – There is Still a Presence at New York Comic Con!

As I am writing this, Dennis is in transit to New York. Just as with San Diego Comic-Con International, Dennis will send cosplay pictures for the Cosplay Photo Gallery and a few extras if he is able to. We will also discuss his trip when he gets back.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Coverage on WWC

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is quickly approaching, and WonderWorldComics.com will be there in full force. I have already told you about how we are sponsoring free autographs by Brian O’Halloran all weekend, but there is more to our presence than just that.

detroit-fanfareKelly’s First Comic Book Convention

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 will be Kelly’s first comic book convention. We are excited to introduce her to a form of pleasant madness she has never come in contact with before. As you well know, she will be deluged with information and action she has never come in contact with before. She is sure to write all about it in the weeks following.

Interviews

We have already begun lining up interviews for WonderWorldComics.com. Some interviews will be performed by Kelly, I will perform some, and a few will be performed by special guests. I would tell you more, but I don’t want to give away some of the interesting ideas we have.

In the Coming Days

In the coming days, I will start talking more about Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013. Expect tips for this year’s convention along with information everyone is going to want to know. I will discuss some of the events you are not going to want to miss out on, and expand on some of the information you will find on the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con website.

Your Central Location

WonderWorldComics.com will be at the center of everything going on during the Detroit Fanfare Comic Con weekend. Make sure you stop here beforehand for all of your DFF news and information – stop by here for all of the news coming out of the event – and stop by here afterwards to find out what you missed. This is going to be a great year for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and WWC is proud to tell you everything you need to know.

If you have not gotten your advance tickets yet, get them today!

Brian O’Halloran Signing FREE at Detroit Fanfare by WonderWorldComics.com

Brian O’Halloran, the Master of Ceremonies Emeritus for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013, will be signing free autographs all weekend during Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con through a sponsorship by WonderWorldComics.com! I will let that sink in for a moment.

1379298_727763910574487_2047958377_nWhat’s Going On?

For months, people have been asking Dennis and I about what WonderWorldComics.com would do for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this year. We debated back and forth about different options, but we both agreed that it would be a great gift to everyone to give a guest who could sign free all weekend long.

Why Brian O’Halloran?

Why would we choose to have Brian O’Halloran sign free autographs all weekend long during Detroit Fanfare Comic Con? I used to have a dog named Dante who was named after Brian’s most famous character from Clerks. It just fits.

The Signing

Brian O’Halloran will autograph one item per person during Detroit Fanfare Comic Con weekend. People spend hours in line at some conventions and spend through the teeth to get one or two autographs. Through this sponsorship by WonderWorldComics.com, you can be guaranteed at least one autograph, no matter how much money you have in your pocket. Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con just got a little cooler.

Spread the Word!

Make sure your friends and family know about the free autographs from Brian O’Halloran the weekend of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con. I would hate to hear about someone who did not know about the opportunity until after the convention closed for the year.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con Aspects I Am Looking Forward To

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con (check it out here) is quickly approaching, and there are a handful of reasons why this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con will stand above the previous three in my mind. These are more personal than public reasons, but some of them might meld with your convention experience as well.

Other Side of the Curtain

Many of you know that I covered the first three Detroit Fanfare Comic Cons for Yahoo! This year, I have taken a few behind-the-scenes positions on staff (Media Contact, Website Director, and a few others smaller roles). Instead of simply experiencing the show, I will know this year’s show is something I helped to build. It is an interesting switch.

Not Covering Detroit Fanfare Comic Con

Don’t worry about this section. I will not be covering Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, but this site still will be. Kelly will be covering her first convention and she will be reporting it as someone who is seeing something new for the first time. I am looking forward to her perspectives this year.

Derek Mears

While there are a ton of great guests this year, there is something interesting which Derek Mears symbolizes for me personally. After meeting Derek, I will have met every person ever to portray Jason Voorhees in a movie. An interesting accomplishment for a huge fan of the series to have met all twelve men. This year’s convention symbolizes a milestone in my fandom of the Friday the 13th series.

Fanimation Celebration

The Fanimation Celebration is one of the events at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con I am really looking forward to. I am hoping I will have enough time to hear the voice actors speak in the voices of the characters which have made them famous.

My Daughter’s First Convention

My five-year-old daughter, Maia, will be attending Detroit Fanfare Comic Con this year, and it will be her first convention. She is looking forward to it, and is as excited about going as I am to see her face when she sees superheroes walking around endless tables of comics.

The Friends

I have many friends in the industry and/or are collectors, who I only get to see at certain times of the year. I always look forward to conventions to catch up with those I am unable to during the rest of the year.

The Size and New Hotel in Same Location

I love the idea that Detroit Fanfare Comic Con is taking over more of the venue. I know there are tons of new events and activities planned this year to compensate for more room. I can’t wait to see what changes the Adoba has in store for this year over previous years.

The Parties

The parties will be a welcome end to long days of working on the convention. They have always been a blast, but the parties at this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con will be a welcome respite.

Even More?

There are also some other changes and event I am looking forward to this year, but I don’t want to ruin any surprises we have planned.

Kelly Explores: Confidence, Costumes, and Society’s Standard of Beauty

This year will be the first year I’ve attended Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, and I’m pretty excited to be involved with it. I have the feeling it’s going to be a great experience, and there’s going to be a lot of fun things to do. A 24-hour game room, the zombie walk, and an adult costume party. Well, it’s a comics convention, so obviously I want to dress in the costume of a comics character. Red Sonja is amazing and kickass, so why not dress up as her?

I’m going to do it. I’m going to wear that chain-mail bikini and get a long, red wig. The works. But I have a confession to make: I am completely terrified to do this.

I work a lot in feminist theory and body politics, and one of the biggest arguments for body-positive imagery is that no matter what your body “type,” you can wear whatever you want, and if anyone else has a problem with that, they can simply not look at you. No big deal. Our acceptance of “beauty” is based entirely on social pressures and print and film media, and not everyone fits into that particular pinhole of “beauty.” In fact, only approximately 4% of the female population in the United States can look anything like a Hollywood actress or a model. The other 96% fall somewhere between “average” and “morbidly obese,” modifiers based on completely bunk science in the first place. But I digress.

I am not skinny. I am also not fat. According to the BMI, I am most definitely obese; I stand at 5’5” and weigh 190lbs (whew, I can’t believe I just put that out there in the Internet for the world to see). And yet, I’m perfectly healthy (for the most part, despite a chronic illness that has nothing to do with weight and everything to do with my reproductive organs wanting to kill me); my blood pressure is actually low, my cholesterol is “beautiful” according to my doctor, and I can do moderate exercise without becoming winded or my heart rate soaring out of control. All told, I actually rather like my body. I’ve got curves, I have great breasts, and I like my chest-waist-hip proportions.

But no amount of self-confidence can outweigh (pun intended) the fact that, according to mainstream societal standards, I’m just another overweight woman. And as much as I’d like to say that I’m educated about the system and I know precisely why the media capitalizes on making skinny equal to beautiful and I know exactly why the diet industry is so financially successful yet statistically dreadful… I still have that voice in the back of my head. I think we all do. That voice which, when I look in the mirror, sneers, “Look at those rolls of fat. Look how chunky you are. God, your arms are so ugly. How many chins do you have? No one could ever find you attractive.” And I can fight back against that voice and tell it to shut up, that I’m not bending to its will or its whim of what someone else wants me to think is “perfect.”

To add to the inner voice of let-me-make-you-feel-like-you’re-worthless, we have a lot of fat-shaming and slut-shaming going on, even within Geek Culture, which you would think should be one of the most accepting cultural groups around. If you doubt this, watch a few episodes of SyFy’s new series Heroes of Cosplay. So it’s not enough that I’m playing directly into the panopticon of perceived perfection, I’m also being bombarded with very direct statements telling me I can’t do X because Y says so, and if I do X, Z will happen.

With all of this in mind, I’ve been bouncing back and forth as to whether I want to dress up in a Red Sonja costume or figure out a reason to wear a high-necked Victorian dress that covers every part of everything on my body. Strangely, there’s no in-between in that. And my thoughts have split down the middle; one perspective is telling me that I can do whatever I want, dress however I want, and enjoy being myself and showing everyone else that they can all back off with their judgment, because I’ve got much more important things on my mind other than whether some random stranger finds me to be visually pleasing; the other perspective is telling me that dressing in something that shows off my body is purposely opening myself up to the very condescension and convoluted thinking that I’m planning on spending the rest of my life to fight against.

In the end, I’ve made a pretty public declaration that I will be rocking a Red Sonja costume, and this is for two reasons: one, I can do whatever I want; and, two, if you’re going to walk the walk, you have to talk the talk. I know precisely how uncomfortable I’m going to be with my body on display. But I also know that I have amazing friends and colleagues, many of whom are proud of me for making the decision to wear the costume and who have told me that I’ll look great. So when you’re hanging out at Detroit Fanfare this year (and you better be!) and you go to the adult’s costume party and you see a short, solid Red Sonja hanging out with the coolest geeks you’ll ever meet, feel free to come up and say hello. Also, let me know how the chain-mail turns out, because I’m hoping to get the costume at the Renaissance Festival and I’m pretty sure the artisans are going to do the most kick-ass job imaginable.

On Having Exceptionally Expensive Items at a Convention

Someone mentioned to me the other day that they did not like seeing exceptionally expensive items at comic book conventions. He said that dealers should know that people are not going to have “thousands of dollars to bring to a show to drop on an item that costs more than the average person makes in a month.” Ahh, but there are reasons why dealers bring exceptionally expensive items to conventions.

What are Exceptionally Expensive Items?

I am not going to be talking about items which are a few hundred dollars in this article. Instead, I am going to be talking about items such as a high graded copy of Avengers #4, pre-#100 issues of Batman, or some of the rarest in toy collectibles.

Exceptionally Expensive Items Create a Buzz

Typically, dealers will bring these items in just to grab attention. These items are sometimes called “honey pots” as they will bring people in like bees. In many cases, it will be the first or only time a collector might see a prized item and is a reminded that big prizes and finds are always out there. The more people around a particular booth, the higher the chance of making a sale.

Exceptionally Expensive Items Intimidate

Sometimes, dealers like to intimidate each other. They like to brag about what items they have found and the deals they were able to take advantage of. If I was a dealer sitting across from one with a key expensive issue on display, I might be a little jealous. Every little chance to knock the competition off should be taken.

Exceptionally Expensive Items Sometimes Sell

I have been at many conventions where I have heard about items selling for in the four to five figure range. While these are rare, a dealer with an expensive item has every chance while dealers who keep the expensive items back don’t have any chance. Maybe…today will be the day that…

Tips for Selling/Trading a Comic Book Collection at a Convention

Many people believe comic book conventions are a great place to sell-off or trade their collections or particular parts of their comic book, gaming, or toy collections. While this is viable in certain cases, there are some potential issues you should take into consideration.

IMG_4311Don’t Assume

Don’t automatically assume vendors are going to be interested in purchasing or trading for your product. They have product of their own they are trying to move. In most cases, their primary concern will be taking care of the shoppers at their booths. They might not be interested in looking at what you have when they have to make sales and make sure people are not walking off with product.

Respect the Vendors

Some vendors are just not interested in buying or trading at a convention. Respect that and move on to another table. Don’t try to sell your item to a person who does not want to buy.

Worst Times to Try

Don’t run up to a vendor to attempt to sell or trade right when the doors first open at a convention. He or she is waiting to be overwhelmed with guests and will be making sure everything is in order and in place. Let alone the fact that the vendor might not have any extra cash on hand since nothing has sold for the day.

Don’t go up to a booth at a comic book convention to sell or trade items when there are excess customers shopping. The vendor is going to be more concerned at that point with protecting product and making money.

Don’t try to sell or trade at a comic book convention when a vendor is eating. At some conventions, vendors have to eat when and where they can. This might be the only five to ten minutes he or she has to relax and recharge before the next rush comes in.

Best Times to Try

All comic book conventions have slow times. Try at the end of a day or during the first few hours on Sunday. These are typically the slowest times and vendors will have extra cash as long as the convention has been successful.

Why Cash is Still the Best Option at Comic Book Conventions

King Kon is Returning in a Little Over a Week!

The calendar is counting down the days until we have the third King Kon of the year. The bulk of con season is winding down, and we continue to get closer to Detroit Fanfare. King Kon is a great show to visit in the interim. King Kon will be at the same location it has been at (Allen Park Key Masonic Lodge) from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm on August 3, 2013. Admission for adults (anyone over 12 years old) is still on $2, and kids still get in free.

Many of you have been to a King Kon over the last year and know it gives a great opportunity to find great deals. If you are looking for comics, you will find great deals. If you are looking for trades, you will find great deals. If you are looking for toys, you will find great deals.

I enjoy working at King Kon as it is a great way to meet many of you and discuss comics, toys, and the website. Also, I end up going home with a handful of items which I have found from dealers. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

If you are a dealer and are interested in a table, there are still a few left. Contact Dennis at DLBARGER313@gmail.com for more information. Tables start as low as $40 for the day.

SDCC Announcements I Wish Would Have Been Made

With all of the announcements made at San Diego Comic-Con this year, I have to say that I am at least a little disappointed that certain items were not announced. This year would have been even better for me if these announcements had been made. Of course, I can still hold out hope for these announcements in the near future.

  • Ok, there were a teases or rumors about a Flash movie and about a Justice League movie. I would have at least liked to hear these addressed.
  • What are some of the titles which are going to be released as part of Marvel NOW Two? Well, at least I can talk now about the titles I would want to see come back.
  • Why wasn’t there any talk about the Ant-Man movie? We still have not heard anything official about a Doctor Strange or Black Panther movie. Well, I can still hold out hope.
  • Has anything gone on with the new version of The Incredible Hulk for ABC?
  • When is the release of Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2? I understand that they might not be able to give an exact date due to potential programming issues, but a ballpark would have been nice.
  • When can we find out more about the Hoax Hunters movie?
  • Some pages from X-Men: War of the Atom or Forever Evil would have gotten people ready for the September War.
  • AMC could not even give a glimpse at The Governor in the preview for The Walking Dead Season 4?

San Diego Comic-Con Random Thoughts Part III

It is time to finish up my series of random thoughts about the San Diego Comic-Con International announcements. You can read the first in the series here, and the second in the series here.

  • There is too much to go over about the Marvel Avengers Alliance announcements, so check this out.
  • Nightcrawler is coming back to Marvel NOW! I had a feeling my favorite blue character would not be dead for long.
  • Michael Jai White is going to join the cast of Arrow. I met him at Detroit Fanfare last year. That is all I am going to say.
  • IDW Publishing is almost done with Dr. Who. I wonder if someone else will pick up the comic or if it will float around in time for ages.
  • There will be another Summer of Valiant next year. Well, since I missed this years, maybe I will check it out next year.
  • George R.R. Martin believes comics are one of the main reasons for his success in TV and film. Not sure about that. I always thought it was because he was such a great writer. I am not saying this to discredit comics…only to give credit where it is truly due.
  • Nice to hear that Bishop will officially be in X-Men: Days of Future Past. It is fitting he will be in the movie.
  • Deadpool vs. Carnage? Not really sure how this one will play out. For some reason, Deadpool has been getting stale for me, but that is just my opinion. We will see how the cross plays out.
  • John Romita Jr. might take on Superman. This one bothers me to no end. I love Romita Jr.’s work, but Superman? Why put him on a title with my least favorite character? Why? DeDiiiiooooo!
  • I should have put this in the first part of this series, but I am very happy to see San Diego Comic-Con International take a zero tolerance approach to harassment of any kind. Good for them. This might help to bring all conventions into line against harassment and with admitting it takes place and realizing it needs to stop.
  • Marvel NOW Two – Marvel is going to relaunch and/or renumber more titles. The first time saw a huge sales increase for the top publisher. Hopefuly, they stick with renumbering and relaunching previous titles and not current ones. I would much rather see a new Excalibur #1, New Mutants #1, or Alpha Flight #1 than a new X-Men #1 or another Superior Spider-Man #1.
  • ComiXology is having a sale this week. Isn’t that the only way they can get people to read digital comics now?
  • So, Hank Pym is not going to be in Avengers: Age of Ultron? Ultron is going to be created by another member? Well, obviously, it would be Tony Stark who would make the android, but I do see this as a loss for the character of Hank Pym. Ultron is an integral part of his character and leads to integral ways of understanding the character. We will just have to see how this plays out.

San Diego Comic-Con Random Thoughts Part II

Between every breath we take, more news comics out of San Diego Comic-Con International. This is the second part of my series of picking out my favorite news bits from the convention and giving my opinions. To see the first part of this series, please follow this link. Part three can be found here.

  • Batman and Son will come out some time next year and be the animated premiere for Damian. With this being a New 52 continuity movie, I am looking forward to seeing if DC Comics will kill Damian off in an animated format.
  • Congrats to all of the Eisner winners including Challenger Comics in Chicago. I also want to send congrats to Green Brain Comics, since it is based here in Michigan and a friend of this website and our store, for making it so far in the running. We look forward to the day when we win ours.
  • Happy to see Saga claen up at the Eisner’s. The wins were well-deserved.
  • The new My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Transformers mini-series from IDW Publishing are sure to help the publisher bump up sales and move closer to helping it solidifying its position in the Top 4 for market share.
  • The Walking Dead Season 4 preview is one of the top items at San Diego Comic-Con International. I think it looks awesome, and has me gearing up for the new season. One issue, though. At the end of the preview, some of the survivors are seen in a car and a voice comes over the radio talking about “sanctuary.” I was immediately reminded of the recording coming across the radio talking about Safe Haven in the Deadworld series. Is this something else “borrowed” from Gary Reed’s zombie apocalypse series?
  • Sadly, the Harley Quinn Suicide Squad figure just does not do it for me. I might end up having to pass on it. The original costume black and white figure coming out in 2014, that will be on my list for May.
  • So the Trinity War is the end of Phase 1 of the New 52. How many phases are we going to get? Was this simply an introduction phase?
  • So much talk about Booster Gold, but wasn’t he supposed to have his own show on SyFy? What every happened with that? It might have actually meant there would have been something good on SyFy which didn’t have to do with sharks. If you get the chance one day, stop in the store and ask me why SyFy hates me.
  • Ragnarok from IDW Publishing has me excited. It will be interesting to compare and contrast the use of Norse mythology in that comic and the use of Norse mythology at Marvel.
  • DC Comics is making MAD Magazine and their All Ages comics returnable in from October. Interesting. I have mixed feelings about returnable comics. While it helps the retailers out, why would publishers create products they did not have full faith in? If a product is stupendous, it never has to be returned.
  • J. August Richards will be portraying Slapstick on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Some might be discouraged by this, but at least we don’t have any Howard the Duck.
  • The big battle for interest at San Diego Comic-Con International is between Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Walking Dead Season 4, and Villain Month/Forever Evil. Interesting three-way fight. The fight is still too early to declare but it is interesting that there are two fighters on TV and one in the stores.

San Diego Comic-Con Random Thoughts Part I

Even though I am not at San Diego Comic-Con International, I still have opinions about what is going on. This is the first part of the series I am running over the next few days in which I will be posting random thoughts about some of the announcements. Some of these items will be featured in their own articles because I have more to say. You will find out which ones when I write them.

See Part II of this series by following this link. Part III can be found here.

  • DC Comics will be releasing a DVD/Bluray entitled “Necessary Evil: Supervillains of DC Comics” in October along with a companion book containing some of the greatest stories surrounding their villains. Yes, both of those sound awesome to me. I love the idea of letting the baddies shine as much as possible.
  • DC will be releasing The Flashpoint Paradox which will bring the animated movies into the New 52 continuity.  I have to say that it is a good idea to pull all arms of DC Entertainment into the New 52 continuity. It adds cohesion and continuity among continuities (or something like that).
  • More Sandman coming from Neil Gaiman? While I am not a fan of the particular character (nothing wrong, just never read the comics), I know that this will invigorate tens of thousands of fans around the world. With Gaiman doing a little work for Marvel right now, this is a major coup for DC Comics.
  • I am happy to hear that Robert Kirkman officially announced that Daryl is not going to be in The Walking Dead comic. I have said for a long time that he should not be.
  • I am also happy about the fact that we will not learn about what is happening in other countries in The Walking Dead. This would force lines of communication which should not be there. On the flip side, though, it means we will never venture into Canada.
  • So there is going to be a crossover between Family Guy and The Simpsons. Yes, I will watch but it will probably be stupid.
  • DC Comics had a digital comics panel. Pffft.
  • There will be a Spider-Man crossover pitting Superior Spider-Man against Venom. I think I am going to have to check this four issue series out.
  • Excited about the idea of Jeff Smith bringing out more Bone. Who could be upset about that? Sure, some might complain that it is coming out through Scholastic, but that just means that kids ordering the books from school will be exposed to comics in school.
  • Detroit filed for bankruptcy. Wait, that has nothing to do with comics and is not a surprise to anyone. Oops.
  • IDW Publishing is expanding the older editions from the Big 2 that they are going to be releasing. I am going to have to get my hands on the Romita Spider-Man book when it comes out.
  • New Hellboy? That is sure to get the girls in our Detroit area comic book store buzzing.
  • If you sign up for the Amazon digital comics newsletter, you will get a free digital copy of Superman #1 from the New 52. What do I think about this? Anyone want to play fill in the blank?
  • I am a little disappointed that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not the ultimate talk of the town yet. Of course, there still is three more days for the House of Ideas to get everyone drooling. I am not counting the possibility out yet.
  • There will be a monthly Shazam title coming from DC Comics in 2014. Shazam (Captain Marvel) was one of my favorite characters as a child. I hope he gets all of the room he needs to grow. They can make him a headliner again.
  • Lex Luthor is the mastermind behind Forever Evil. This makes sense to me. He is one of the top 5 villains the company has to offer and Joker is probably still reeling from the end of Death of the Family, so it would be impossible to expect him to come up with a master plan of this magnitude this quickly.

Well, that is it for the first part of my San Diego Comic-Con random thoughts so far. More to come along with expansions on some of the topics presented here.

Why I am Happy I am Not at San Diego Comic-Con International

I have to say that I am of the minority when I say that I am happy I am not at San Diego Comic-Con International right now. I will occasionally go to large comic book conventions, but I prefer the smaller ones when they come up.

Comic-Con International

Comic-Con International

I Will be Saving Money

Since I am not going to San Diego Comic-Con International this year, I will be saving money which I can spend at smaller conventions and shows later this year (like King Kon on Auguest 3 and Detroit Fanfare). I don’t have to worry about the ticket price or the airfare. I don’t have to worry about figuring out how I am going to buy everything I might want and still have money left over for food. These worries will be foreign to me when discussing San Diego Comic-Con International.

Not Getting Bumped Around

If you have met me, you know that I am not a big guy. Granted, I am six feet tall, but I am around 175 and get bumped around often at bigger conventions. I prefer the smaller conventions where I can look through long and short boxes or check out booths without drowning in a sea of people while trying to hold my footing on the floor of a convention like San Diego Comic-Con International.

No Lines

There were issues earlier this year when there were conventions plagued with long lines. The funny thing is, this is something which has become expected at San Diego Comic-Con. International. Nope, instead of waiting an hour in line for a hot dog, I can go into the kitchen and make one for myself (at a fraction of the cost).

Yay!

San Diego Comic-Con International: Our Presence There

I have received a few emails over the last week asking if I am going to be at San Diego Comic-Con International. Sadly, I will not be this year because of various other plans I have set over the next month. Don’t worry, the website and store will have a presence at the event this year.

IMG_8588Who is Going?

Dennis Barger, co-owner of Wonderworld Comics will be in attendance this year. He will be messaging me with any important information you need to know about and will be taking as many cosplay pictures as he can for our Cosplay Photo Gallery.

Don’t Forget

Wonderworld Comics has the esteemed honor this year of being nominated for a Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award. This honor have gone a step further, and we have been named as one of the 15 finalists for the award. The award will be given at San Diego Comic-Con International and Dennis will be there.

What This Means

The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award is an international award which means Wonderworld Comics is being considered as one of the best comic book stores in the world. This is not simply a reflection of ownership and the staff. This is also a reflection of the great customers we have and the great friends we have made over the years through the store. Congratulate yourselves as this honor is as equally yours as it is ours.

My Task

I am going to weed through all of the news comic out of San Diego over the next week and give you my opinions on the most important and impactful items which you need to know about. Keep your eyes on this site for the information which will impact you, us, and the comic book industry the most.

My Wishlist for Comic-Con International 2013

With Comic-Con International in San Diego quickly approaching, a handful of items are coming to mind which I hope comic book publishers shed more light upon. This is my wish list for Comic-Con International.

Comic-Con International

Comic-Con International

Marvel

Marvel has added a few new dates to their calendar for movies. While I am sure they will announce both movies at Comic-Con International, I am hoping one of them will be the Doctor Strange movie. The Sorcerer Supreme’s fans have waited too long for this moment.

I have stated before, but I should state again that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs to dominate Comic-Con International. I would love to see longer videos of the show and at least hints to who some of the superheroes and supervillains are that we will see on the show.

The September War is quickly approaching, and one of the upcoming highlights is X-Men: Battle of the Atom. It would behoove Marvel to highlight this major crossover to show how it will bring the big guns out to battle DC Comics in the war for market share.

DC Comics

I am sure a ton of time will be spent on Villain Month, Forever Evil, and Trinity War, but DC Comics needs to place a focus on the media entertainment arm of the company. We need to hear about some movies in the works and get some answers to the questions and rumors we have heard about potential movies coming from DC Comics. Comic-Con International would be the best time to set things straight.

Also, DC Comics needs to use some of its time at Comic-Con International to highlight Arrow. The show keeps getting swept under the rug and is the one show which DC Comics has to make an impact with. Why spend all of the money making the movie if the entertainment side of DC is not going to promote it with all their might?

Image

I know that Comic-Con International will be used to exploit Image’s ace in The Walking Dead. I am sure some new characters and teasers will come from the company. I am hoping for more, though. Image has a great lineup of comics right now and they should be pushed equally to The Walking Dead. Image wants to take the next step ever since it took the #3 spot in market share. Comic-Con International is the place to do it.

IDW

IDW made major waves at the Diamond Retailers Summit and C2E2 by officially announcing its new Cartoon Network comics, the finalization of Locke & Key, and other projects in the works. I would love to see the guys and gals over at IDW Publishing get a huge burst due to a huge announcement. I hope they are able to make major waves this year.

Dark Horse

I would like to see Dark Horse prove it is a company of more than just Star Wars comics. While the line has made the company a competitor for many years, with the Disney takeover of Star Wars, the current deal to produce the comics might be the final one the company sees. Just in case, Dark Horse needs to highlight why its other comics deserve as much attention as the company hopes they will get.

The Smaller Companies

Maybe this will be the year that a 1%er makes a major coup. I would clap if the headlines about Comic-Con International focused on a smaller company which does not get enough respect. Do I have any companies I am personally pushing for? Yes, but I would never tell.

Gaming, Toys, and Conventions Now Part of Collector’s Corner

You might have noticed that the Collector’s Corner section on WonderWorldComics.com has moved slightly. You also might have noticed that Collector’s Corner is now split into multiple sections. This is a website project I have been devising and working on over the last few days. Why did I do it?

New Collector's Corner sections!

New Collector’s Corner sections!

The New Collector’s Corner Sections

Instead of simply being one general area for Collector’s Corner, the category has been broken into four separate subcategories. The subcategories are Comic Book Collecting, Toy Collecting, Gaming Collecting, and Conventions. You will see an arrow next to the words “Collector’s Corner” in the top menu on the front page. Hovering over the tab will show the new sections. I have spent much of the day moving the old articles from Collector’s Corner into the appropriate subcategories.

Why Did Wonderworld Comics Do This?

Not only does Wonderworld Comics specialize in comic books, the company also specializes in collectible toys, collectible gaming (card and tabletop), and in many other areas as well. Since our store is so diversified, I felt it was time for the website to become more diversified as well.

No Worries

Don’t worry about the site being overrun with articles about everything other than comics. The main focus on the site will be on comics, comic book collecting, and comic book news. One of the new sections is labeled Conventions, but there have been convention articles since the beginning of content on this site. Those convention articles did not overwhelm, so don’t worry about toy and gaming articles taking over.

The Plans

I have some interesting ideas for the Gaming Collecting subcategory. I have been playing role-playing games for almost three decades and have been collecting gaming books for about 15 years. I have various types of gaming collecting articles lined up, even some which would interest people who have never gamed before.

The Toy Collecting section could be expansive, and might be one day. For now, I am going to keep the articles general, but will focus on some various lines of toys such as LEGO, GI Joe, Masters of the Universe, Transformers, and some of the other classics.

Now that all of the behind-the-scenes planning and implementing of these sections from the last few days is out of the way, I can get back to doing what I really love to do – delivering content which you will not find anywhere else.

Speak Up Against the Bastardization of Comic Book Conventions

Over the years, most comic book conventions have been bastardized to the point that even comic book fans have forgotten about the base these comic book conventions have in the comic book industry. While there are glimmers of hope on the comic book convention scene, such as comics-forward conventions like Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, Gem City Comic-Con, Baltimore Comic Con, Heroes Con, the Midwest Comic Book Association,  and the conventions and shows which place comic book fans first – I see major changes in the future for comic book conventions which are inevitable unless WE speak up.

544328_10151448354451359_1628468336_nDropping the Comic-Con

I would not be surprised if major comic book conventions begin dropping the tags of “Comic-Con” or “Comic Con” from their titles. I can see the conventions becoming so wrapped up in the media guests that they try to “rebrand” themselves as either media shows or as some other type of “all inclusive” show or convention. In true name, the conventions would become so bastardized that they would literally forget their parenting force.

Taking the Comics Out of Comic Book Conventions

Right now, the comic book industry is seeing better numbers than it has in over a generation. What will happen to the industry if it is essentially limited to only comics-forward conventions? How will sales sag? As these bastardized conventions spend more money, time, and effort focusing on media events and guests, why would they even be interested in signing comic book creators and vendors? Most cities do not have comics-forward conventions to begin with, so average fans would not have conventions and shows to go to that would be their own in their own areas.

What WE Need To Do

Notice, I am saying that WE need to do something. This fight is not something this website can do on its own. Every single comic book reader, creator, and collector should send some type of message to the bastardized comic book conventions about how the tide has changed and how our conventions have been stolen from us in the favor of trying to appeal to a larger audience. We should let convention promoters and planners know that they should not forget the market which put them on the map in the first place. We need to get together and fight for our conventions before they are won over by the Starbucks-sipping d-bags who care more about a current trend than one of the longest lasting forms of entertainment on the market today.

Ed Kramer and the Dragon*Con Boycott: An Academic Look

[I asked Kelly to look into, and comment on, the situation with Ed Kramer, the allegations against him, and the proposed Dragon*Con boycott. As you might know, she is an academic. What you might not know is that one of her areas of specialty is rape culture. I believed she would see this situation differently than most writers I could assign the task to. Many of us have been to Dragon*Con, and this situation can set precedence for all types of conventions across the country. (Larry)]

Draon*Con - Ed Kramer

Draon*Con – Ed Kramer

My primary research area is literature. My secondary research area is rape culture. This is why I’ve been approached to write an article regarding the recent boycott of Dragon*Con started by Nancy Collins, and to discuss the widespread implications of the discussion surrounding the boycott and the founder and co-owner of the Con, Ed Kramer. This article will include discussion on subjects such as child molestation, rape, and other emotionally triggering topics.

Let me start by saying that I’ve never been to Dragon*Con, and I’m only technically familiar with the Con tangentially; one of my favorite authors is a long-time attendant and has regularly encouraged her fans to be part of the parade and festivities every year. I’ve never really had the desire to travel to Atlanta for any reason, even for the Con, so I’ve never bothered to go, although I’m aware that it exists. It’s just never really been on my radar.

But I understand that Dragon*Con (that all Cons, really) provides a safe space for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy genre, a place where fans can truly be themselves and dress in cosplay and have a great time without risking the judgment, stares, or jeers. I fully support safe spaces and I always will.

However, it has recently come to my attention that Ed Kramer stands accused of multiple counts of child molestation, none of which he’s officially stood trial for, and that he continues to hold stock in Dragon*Con and continues to make money from the Con every year. That being said, Nancy Collins has recently led a growing group of people who have started a Facebook page promoting a boycott of Dragon*Con for the very reason that the continued income Kramer receives allows for him to continue to pay legal fees that allow for him to put off trial and sentencing indefinitely.

I could write pages detailing why Ed Kramer’s financial success is part of the issue and why the American justice system is also part of the issue. Both of these things are problems and both of them are very broad subjects. But what I want to focus on is the discussion revolving around Kramer and those who claim that he’s innocent and that Dragon*Con should not suffer a boycott.

Regardless of Ed Kramer’s guilt or innocence in these allegations, he has the right to a trial by jury. To survivors of sexual assault, he has the responsibility to accept trial by jury. If he’s truly innocent, what does he have to hide? The largest problem with the dialect of this case is that Dragon*Con supporters and Kramer supporters are calling the alleged victims liars, claiming that they’re out for attention, money, etc.

Stop. Stop right there. You should never, under any circumstance, naturally assume that a victim of sexual assault is lying. Do false accusations happen? Yes, but their occurrence is right around 0.6%. This makes them statistically null and void. False allegations in sexual assault happen so rarely, they don’t even make up one single percent of accusations. So the suggestion that the victims are lying is just a continued perpetuation of a culture where we protect rapists instead of protecting the victims whose lives they’ve effectively ruined.

When talking about rape and child molestation accusations, any time you cry out that “They must be lying for attention or for money!!”, you effectively silence the victim. I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping that thought to yourself. When you accuse victims of lying, you further the psychological torture they’re already attempting to endure, and you astronomically heighten the chance that they will start engaging in damaging behaviors (i.e. self-mutilation, compulsive behaviors, etc.) and even commit suicide.

Rape is an act of power, not pleasure. And when one person rapes another, they are doing so because they know that they have the power in that situation, and they know that their victim is weaker than they are, be it physically, mentally, or a combination of the two. When a child is raped, and then silenced because they must be “false allegations,” you have essentially taken any power that they had by reporting the assault and you’ve put them right back where they were before: in a position of subordination wherein they are fully aware they have no power, and wherein the only way out is through extreme measures.

I don’t care who is being accused of rape or molestation; that person must stand trial. And if that person is able to slither out of trial by a number of legal loopholes and thanks to his/her extensive bank account, that’s a big problem. If Ed Kramer is innocent, he has the right to seek restitution from his accusers. But that is one very large if. Remember: only 0.6% of allegations are false.

If Ed Kramer is guilty, he is guilty of far more than just molestation; he’s guilty of wringing what he wants out of the legal system, he’s guilty of a massive cover-up which he used his own fortune to do, and he’s guilty of lying to millions of people and ruining the lives of a handful of children who are now grown and will never be the same. But the only thing he can technically go to jail for is the molestation.

I can’t say I fully support a boycott of Dragon*Con. In an ideal world, the other stakeholders would be able to cut Kramer off from the funds and continue on with the Con as they have been. But considering the fact that kicking Ed Kramer out isn’t likely to happen, maybe a boycott is the only way to convince Ed Kramer that:

1.)    We stand with the victims,

2.)    We’re sick of his endless leaps through loopholes to avoid trial, and

3.)    We don’t want our money going to his legal circus.

Regardless of your stance on the boycott, it’s glaringly obvious that something must be done about this situation. If you’re as outraged as I was to discover Ed Kramer’s past, there are a number of things you can do to let Dragon*Con know that you don’t want your money going into his pockets.

Write them a letter, call them out on Youtube, call them out on Facebook and Twitter and Tumblr. Get a group together to raise awareness of this situation and stand peacefully outside of Dragon*Con with signs letting the Con-goers know what the founder of their Con is being accused of, and let them know that their money is supporting him. Boycott if you want to. But the most important thing in this case is to raise awareness of the allegations against Kramer and to lend your support to the survivors. Let the survivors know that we believe them, and we stand with them. And let Ed Kramer know that, too.

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, please report the crime and get help.

King Kon is Just in Time for Father’s Day

King Kon is only a few days away and it is fitting how this quarter’s show falls on Father’s Day weekend. Saturday will be a fitting day to visit King Kon.

As a Father

Silver Age comics

As a father, I love when my daughter finds enjoyment in something I like. Sometimes that comes in the form of looking in my rearview mirror while driving and seeing that she is singing along to a song I have enjoyed for twenty years or more. Other times, I might get a warm feeling when I am reading her a story I grew up with. One special bond we share, though, is a love of superheroes. Shows like King Kon can give a father and child the opportunity to share their love of a particular character or superhero series without dealing with the hustle and bustle of a major convention.

Sharing the Memories

Some of my favorite moments in our Detroit area comic book store come when I see a father pointing out toys in the store he grew up with. Kids are often amazed how their parents played with the “old” toys we have on our shelves. The youngest generation wonders how we managed to get enjoyment out of these little action figures or vehicles which did not have automatic parts or controllers. They must think we lived in a simpler time (well, we did…but that is another article). I am looking forward to seeing those moments this weekend at King Kon.

What Might You Find?

You might be surprised by some of the items you find. Maybe you can find that old board game you and your father used to play with years ago. Maybe you will find a copy of a comic your dad picked up for you during a quick run for milk. You might find a toy you used to play with as he read the paper. You might even find a gift for Father’s Day at King Kon for the old man or even for yourself.

Importance of the Shel Dorf Awards

The 2013 Shel Dorf Award Nominations are now open. The Shel Dorf Awards are special to me and I want to share a little bit about them with you. You can nominate your favorites by following this link, but I encourage you to read about the importance of the awards first.

Nominations for the 2013 Shel Dorf Awards now being accepted!

Nominations for the 2013 Shel Dorf Awards now being accepted!

The Difference of the Shel Dorf Awards

Most award nomination processes are run by guys with suits who nominate based on sales, potential future deals, or on perceived popularity. This is true from the Oscars down to many of the “industry awards” granted in various industries. Not so with the Shel Dorf Awards. The nominations and eventual votes are completely determined by the fans.

The Importance of the Shel Dorf Awards

Since the nominations and votes for the Shel Dorf Awards are cast by fans, the creators involved are given an extra confidence push they might not receive from other awards. They know that it was the fans that got them where they are, and not just some dealmakers in a smoke-filled room. Creators realize the fans like what they are doing and that the fans are pledging to continue to support them in the future.

I Remember…

I remember being at the first Shel Dorf Awards at the first Detroit Fanfare in 2010. There was talk at the ceremony about there being a revolution coming where Detroit Fanfare and the fans of the convention would take back comic book conventions. This movement would grow and that the industry would have to realize that we (the fans) wanted comic book conventions that were about comic books, comic book creators, and comic book fans and not about forgotten sitcom stars, wrestlers, and porn stars. I remember becoming invigorated and determined to pay close attention to the progression of this movement and to the growth of Detroit Fanfare.

The Movement of the Shel Dorf Awards

The following year, all of the Shel Dorf Award nominees were determined by the fans. We were not given a long list of people to choose from which were determined by someone. We were given the opportunity to choose who we wanted to win a Shel Dorf Award and who should be given the “fan’s recognition.” So too was the process in 2012 and so too is the process for the 2013 Shel Dorf Awards.

Symbolism of the Shel Dorf Awards

Note, the awards are named after Shel Dorf who was the founder of the Detroit Triple FanFair. He realized that it was time for someone to create a show for the fans where we could come and hang out with other people like ourselves and have the chance to meet some of the creators who gave us joy through our favored form of media. He gave the fans what they wanted and it is through his legacy that we show who we believe deserves recognition at the Shel Dorf Awards.

Particular Connection

I was honored to be nominated for the Comic Book Blogger of the Year award at the 2012 Shel Dorf Awards due to my work in following the industry for Yahoo!. That nomination (even though I did not win) is one of the highlights of my writing career. Hopefully, that opportunity will come again sometime in the future (hint hint hint).

The Shel Dorf Awards is not a stuffy ceremony with awards decided upon by a select few. It is determined by you, and me, and anyone else who decides to vote. This is our comic book awards and we should take every opportunity we can to promote it and to encourage our friends to have their voices heard as well.

Denver Comic Con Lines – Another Convention Plagued With Long Lines

News out of Denver is that fans are waiting in very long lines to get into Denver Comic Con. Some reports are placing the wait is up to four hours to get into the convention center. This is a dangerous trend with comic book conventions which needs to be taken care of immediately.

Comic book convention lines. Ain't nobody got time fo dat!

Comic book convention lines. Ain’t nobody got time fo dat! – This is not actually a picture from Denver.

The Recent Past

Both Dallas Comic Con and Motor City Comic Con have made headlines recently due to long lines which have kept fans at bay for hours. With Denver Comic Con having the same issues, how many fans are going to become discouraged about coming to future comic book conventions?

Denver Comic Con Issue

According to Channel 9 News in Denver, the promoters and management of Denver Comic Con were not prepared for the long lines they were experiencing today. While having more guests than you would expect is a good thing, not being prepared for the numbers is something different. Comic books are in an upswing, the top movies each year are typically related to comics in some way, and more people are heading to conventions than ever before. It would be better for conventions to overstaff the front door than to automatically expect the status quo will work year-in and year-out.

The Damage Long Lines at Conventions Can Cause

First off, we have to take a look at the health risks involved with excruciatingly long lines. Issues such as exhaustion, heat exposure (in the summer) and hypothermia (in the winter) are issues which comic book convention promoters have to be concerned about. A comic book convention is supposed to be a happy event and it is the job of the staff to make sure health concerns never come into play.

Another issue is the short-term issue of people turning around and going home disappointed because they did not want to wait in line. This takes money out of the pockets of the convention itself, the vendors, and the guests.

Over the long-term, many fans could easily become discouraged by seeing stories about comic book convention lines and decide to stay home. Instead of taking another huge upswing in attendance, conventions might start losing attendance spikes because fans are too scared about the possibility of standing in line for three or four hours.

Comic book convention promoters and their staffs need to sit down and plan for dealing with lines which would boggle their minds. Comic books are the going thing, and comic book conventions need to make sure they stay high on as many lists as possible. Nipping this problem with long lines is the first step.

Popular Misconceptions About Comic Book Conventions

Convention Hotels Need to Treat Us Better

Why do convention hotels discount genre convention attendees? I have attended dozens of conventions across the country and in Canada, and have found a similar problem at most of the hotels I have stayed in. As someone who has worked as a travel writer, there are certain aspects of how convention hotels discount their guests which the average person might not ever notice. Even though you might not have noticed these issues, it does not mean they should not be changed.

DC's WTF Certified

WTF Certified

The Restaurants

First off, restaurants inside convention hotels will often try to change their menus to “accommodate”  conventiongoers. Sometimes this is a good thing as with the time that I covered a convention made up of mostly rabbis who wished to discuss the future of the Jewish faith. The hotel restaurants made sure the food being prepared was kosher. This was an understandable change.

On the flip, we have the Hyatt Regency McCromick Place, where we stayed this year during the Diamond Retailer’s Summit and C2E2. This is a 4-Star restaurant which is known for having delicacies and food which is high above what might be found at other hotels in the city. Why in the hell would they have a buffet made up of cheese nachos, chicken fingers, and pizza? For $13 (the cost of the buffet), I would have rather eaten pizza at one of the pizza joints the city is known for. Why would I want to get cheese nachos at a top-of-the-line hotel restaurant?

While attending the Up in the Aether steampunk convention, I had dinner at the Doubletree Hotel Dearborn/Detroit restaurant. I was told that the chicken in my chicken Caesar salad was prepared fresh. My Grandma was a chef and I can tell the difference between fresh and heated meat. I overheard one of the waitresses say “We can tell them whatever we want. These geeks won’t know the difference.”

The Pool and the Staff

Have you ever noticed that hotels do not have lifeguards on duty at the pool during conventions? You might not know this, but many four and five star hotels pay lifeguards but lay them off or reassign them during weeks of conventions. This is a way they cut their costs to make more money from the conventions. The same goes for many of the other types of members of the staff from room service to front desk moderation. A key area you might notice this is the empty valet parking or coat check rooms during a convention. Now, this is not the case with all upper tier convention hotels, but many of them.

Comped Rooms

I have found it more difficult to receive a comped room due to some type of issue during a convention than during any other time of the year. I went to a horror convention a few years ago and overheard a girl complaining about how there was mold in her shower. She stated that she did not notice it until the morning after she had spent all night in the room. The person at the front desk first told her that he would send someone up to clean her room. I stepped in an pointed out how simply cleaning the room might not remove the mold particles from the air.

The gentleman suggested moving her to another room. I whispered to the guest that she should be comped for the inconvenience and the possible health risk she faced. She spoke up and the person at the desk said he was not authorized to give her a free night and that there was not someone on staff who could authorize that. I stepped up and gave the person behind the desk my card which gave my press and travel writing credentials. Amazingly, the clerk remembered that he was authorized to give her a free stay at the hotel that weekend.

The next time that you stay at any of the convention hotels in the country, remember that you should be allowed the same privileges and should be treated with the same amount of respect as any other guest staying the hotel during the year. Convention hotels need to realize they need to keep us as satisfied as their regular guests. If not, we will not be back in the future.

Review of Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

I had the opportunity to attend the Up in the Aether steampunk convention at the Doubletree Hotel Southfield/Detroit. What did I think?

Here I was hunting Steampunk fans in their natural environment - Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

Here I was hunting Steampunk fans in their natural environment – Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

Broken Misconceptions

I went into the Up in the Aether steampunk convention with certain misconceptions about steampunk conventions. Don’t blame me as I had never attended a steampunk convention before. I expected everyone to be talking in strained and feigned European accents and to be in character the entire time. I found this was not the case as there were only a few people who attempted to hold perception of character. The fake accents, though, could not be missed.

The Overall Feel of the Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention

Most of the guests at the Up in the Aether steampunk convention appeared to be having a good time. They were in their element. If you are a steampunk cosplayer, or someone who has a deep love for the genre, I could see you having a blast at the convention. I have been to many different types of conventions and can usually pick those people who are simply there because they have to be or because they believe they need to be to make it through the motions of tradition. I was hard-pressed to find those types of individuals at this convention.

Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

Up in the Aether Steampunk Convention 2013

The Casual Attendee

I am a fan of steampunk literature and media adaptations, but have never considered following the “steampunk lifestyle.” I know this is a genre convention, but I am sad to say that I did not gain the level of excitement at the convention that fans of the “steampunk lifestyle” did. I am not making a suggestion that they make the show more inviting to non-genre fans as that might take from the magic enjoyed by the traditional attendees of a steampunk show. As with most genre-strict conventions, non-genre fans are not catered to and should not expect to be catered to. If you are considering the “steampunk lifestyle,” the Up in the Aether steampunk convention would be a great convention to check out. If you are a casual fan of the literary genre, you might not find very much to do.

The Convention Itself

I have to commend the planners and promoters of the convention for having a constant schedule of events for attendees to participate in. Panels on attire creation, historical classes, and weapons displays filled the roster of events. Live bands, DJs and a marionette animation could also be experienced. There were very few dead times during the convention.

One Area for Improvement

There was only one area where I could say that the promoters and planners of the Up in the Aether steampunk convention needed to improve upon. While this is a hurdle created by the layout of the Doubletree Hotel, it is something the convention’s minds need to figure out.

The hallways on the first floor of the hotel are fairly narrow. If something is going on in one of the hallways, maneuvering around can be very difficult. They had a live mermaid perform, and whenever she would be swimming in the pool, the hallway would fill up with people trying to see her swim. This made it difficult for hotel guests to get to their rooms as they had to pass through that particular hallway. As someone who has covered conventions for years for various sites, areas of congestion are a pet peeve of mine, but still believe they can ruin an event or an evening for conventiongoers.

All-in-all, I would say that the Up in the Aether steampunk convention gave a great showing for the first time out. I wish them many years of success. You can learn more about the convention by following this link.

You can see pictures of the costumes in our Cosplay Photo Gallery.

The Girls are Taking Over Comic Cons – A Guest’s Perspective

While attending the Dallas Comic Con, I happened to notice the abundances of female visitors. It’s one thing to hear that women are just as into comics as men, but another to actually see it. Moreover, where the guys will talk shop about their favorites; the girls are more prone to dress up.

;lkj;

The stereotype of the unwashed comic con fanboy is also coming to a close. The guys are starting to realize that girls are there, and they don’t want to be caught blowing one off for a ‘fake geek girl’.

And who started that insane slight on the girl nerd? I need not point any fingers. We all know where it started. That’s unimportant. The part that should be paid attention to is a that a mob of high school girls are showing up at the convention dresses up, and not just to get attention. I’m not sure how sexy a red-head dressed like she’s homeless with a mock busted lip and a sign “The end is nigh” alongside a female, cigar chomping, armored up Comedian is.

Here is the reality of it: like games, girls are not afraid to love comics; I suppose much in the same way Bronies exist.

100_0218This is not what we are seeing in the comic book world though. In DC Comic’s new line-up, we find noble she-warrior turn into a nymphomaniac with the memory of a gnat (Starfire), transitions from sex-symbol-to-woman-breaking-the-mold with empowerment get demoted to a second (or third) stringer girlfriend (Power Girl), and the culling of the female creative staff at DC from 12% to 1%. It’s time for comics to reflect the audience better.

But maybe Amanada Conner (former artist for Power Girl) had pointed out at the Dallas Comic Con: “I think in 10 years, you’re going to see way, WAY more female comic creators”

My mind goes back to the group of 16 year-old girls dressed like prominent DC characters, whom collectively named “Nightwing’s ass” as one of their favorite characters and “just died!” when they saw Neil Patrick Harris voicing Nightwing in “Under the Red Hood”. These are the girls that will make their way into the industry in the next decade.

Are we ready for this? I sure am. I’m mildly humored at the notion of the sexism boot being tried on a different foot. I am hopeful that once the girls try it on, we can all meet in the middle for a deeper level of mindless entertainment, fantastic adventure, new twists on old noir storytelling, and most of all: diversity.

Dallas Comic Con 2013: A Guest’s Review

This isn’t the comic book world I thought it would be when entering Dallas Comic Con. I’ve known it was changing, but I hadn’t realized just how far behind the comic world was to the real world. The male dominated industry should pay closer attention to the conventions. There were almost equal parts of men and women at the Dallas Comic Con, and the women are coming alone more than not, as well as coming younger.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Dallas Comic Con 2013

Big Sellers at Dallas Comic Con

Big sellers in the comic department are Walking Dead, New 52 titles, Blackest Night, Spidey, and any number of the Gotham titles (mostly Nightwing and Batman). The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seem to be on the upswing still despite the controversy surrounding Micheal Bay vs. the fans. Classic title sales went to any of the older Marvels and Batman selections.

What Was the Top Attention-Getter at Dallas Comic Con?

The overall Dallas Comic Con winner for popularity in costume, fan paraphernalia, people’s choice, and vendor sales would have to be Deadpool.

Top WTF? Product at Dallas Comic-Con

The popular “WTF?” product was PopHeroes. These weird little figures are clearly the next “MiniMates”. MVP dolls were the Dallas Comic-Con exclusive Reverse Flash, the Black Flash, and Deadpool color swap version.

Biggest Letdown of Dallas Comic Con

Nathan Fillion had canceled at the last minute due to health issues. He made the announcement on his twitter, apologizing to his fans.

Biggest Crowd-Pleaser at Dallas Comic Con

Kevin Conroy was more than happy to pick up the slack of the missing writer/space pilot/pompous musical superhero. Batman saves the day once more.

The Ratings for Dallas Comic Con

The Location (4.5): I give the Irving Convention Center credit for being fresh, artistically appealing, and very accommodating for fantastical photos. The points deducted are for lack of sensible mobility upward. You can’t comfortably traverse floors without congestion unless you use the massive outside stairs… in Texas.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Access (2.5): The “merry-go-round” the ticket booth was a bad move. You stand outside and wait to get your wrist band, then go back out side and wait after you get your wrist band. Access to the main room on the first floor was also the same 10 feet of area that you needed to go on or come off the escalator. Five points of access to the main hall and they chose the access next to the escalator to be the only entrance.

Merchandise (4): With the number of people coming into this convention, I didn’t see much in the way of freebies for convention goers. BigFanBoy had a freebie room set up; but all they had was a few old movie posters, one or two new movie posters, and 3 different Tyler Perry movie posters. Do not bring Tyler Perry movie posters to a comic book convention. There was a Dallas Comic Con exclusive booth, but nothing free.

On the flip side, there was plenty to be sold and within reasonable prices. Nearly every comic was half off. T-shirts were $20 or less. Nearly every vender was motivated to empty out their backstock. VIP members had access to a small cache of loot for visit.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Dallas Comic Con 2013

Side Shows (3.5): There was a “Sunday Funny Paper” exhibit at Dallas Comic Con – neat historically, but falls flat with the modern crowd. Robotech Theater was also kind of cool but would have been a much bigger hit with all of the direct to video DC Animated movies.

The “Face-Off” workshop and booth at Dallas Comic Con with Heather Henry was an excellent idea with the constantly growing cosplay crowd. Comic book related or not, Darth Vader and Boba Fett from the 501st Troopers charity group went over well. Bigfanboy was bogus considering the extensive number of comic movies on the big and small screen alike recent and in the future yet nothing to feature. Again, whose bright idea was it to drag Tyler Perry posters into a comic book/sci-fi convention?

Fan Service (4): Shatner, Spiner, McFadden, and Burton were a nice turn-out for sci-fi lovers. John Romita Jr. owned the new generation of comic fans while nodding to the “old school” with reverence and legacy, while Jim Steranko commanded the respect of lovers of the “old school” of both heroes and horror in comics. The crowd demanded it, so Conroy managed to pick up 2 panels to address fans. Despite not being much of a Power Rangers fan, Jason David Frank was entertaining even for me. Adam Baldwin was a late add, and managed to prevent a full-scale riot for Firefly fans. The number of orange toboggans were insane.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013 Cosplay

Dallas Comic Con 2013 Cosplay

In the comic book alley at in the back of the Dallas Comic Con exhibition hall, Phil Noto stayed hard at work drawing fan requests, and could easily be named the hardest working fan server in the convention, second only to Romita jr. Amanda Conner couldn’t find much time for herself, even with her man – Jimmy Palmiotti – running assist along side her. The most approachable was John Lucas, making no bones about talking straight and frank to anyone opening their mouth his way. I even bought some Conan panels from him.

Also making a show, the infamous Delorean from “Back to the Future”, the Jeep from “Jurassic Park”, and the Dallas Ghostbuster’s Ecto PT Cruiser.

The down side it the lost their big hitter when Fillion bailed.

Bio Needs (3.5): This is an unspoken but highly important quality of a convention: bathrooms and food/drink. The bathrooms at Dallas Comic Con were regularly serviced, but occasionally I would find a facet that didn’t work. The concession stands had basic “ball game” food for slightly less than “ball game” prices, so I mark that as a slight plus. It was a rocky start on day one, but they picked it up and ran smoother on day two/three. Some food trucks showed up after opening, offering gourmet hot dogs and even a cupcakes. Great food, but also much more expensive.

Dallas Comic-Con 2013

Dallas Comic Con 2013

Final score: 4 (out of 5)

Dallas Comic Con isn’t the type of Con you travel out of state for without having an agenda. For us Texans, it is worth the time and travel. There are ways they can improve, such as the control of traffic and the method of dealing with tickets. There seems to be a need for more … not any particular “more”, but it seemed like the space wasn’t fully maximizes in some very slight ways. I was able to find unused rooms spread out here and there. Perhaps not banking the show on someone that has a history of bailing on events. Also, try booking in people that are more connected to the industry and happy to be there … not Andrew McCarthy.

Motor City Comic Con Facing Horrid Problems This Weekend

Our Detroit area store is receiving phone calls today about severe issues at Motor City Comic Con centered on guests not being processed in time and excruciatingly long lines to get into the event. I made some phone calls to get to the bottom of the issues, and this is what I found out:

Disclaimer

I know that some of you might question this article because this site, and the store it is associated with, are sponsors of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con. Rest assured, my task with this article is to supply you with information about what is going on in the area as it relates to comic books and comic book collecting.

DC’s WTF Certified

What is Going On at Motor City Comic Con?

Callers to our store and people on Facebook have been complaining all morning about excruciatingly long lines to get into Motor City Comic Con. According to the calls and to posts on Motor City Comic Con’s Facebook page, people who purchased advanced tickets online are being forced to stay in the same line with people who are purchasing their tickets on-site. This is causing for lines to get backed up and has apparently caused a lag in processing tickets.

Easily Avoidable Problem

I hate to do this, but the long lines are something which could have been avoided by the Motor City Comic Con staff and by the promoters of the event. Many major conventions have separate lines for on-site ticket purchasers and for those which have already purchased their tickets in advance. For those of you who have read my reviews of conventions on this site and on previous sites that I have written for, will remember how I praised Detroit Fanfare, Motor City Nightmares, and other conventions for splitting the lines to make sure they move faster.

The Fire Marshall Rumor

A rumor began to spread around noon today that the Novi Fire Marshall had closed Motor City Comic Con down or that he had temporarily shut the event down. I contacted the Novi Fire Department to find out if this rumor was true. The representative of the Novi Fire Department told me that the rumor was not true. The Fire Marshall is working with Motor City Comic Con to get the staff to move through processing ticket holders faster to ensure the long lines outside do not become a safety hazard. Already, some people have passed out in line and human safety is a strong concern. Again, this is something which could have been avoided with better planning.

The Parking

The Gridiron Greats Hall of Fame Dinner & Gridiron Greats and Detroit City Sports Autograph Signing & Sports Memorabilia Show is current going on at the Suburban Collection Showplace along with Motor City Comic Con. That event, according to the sources which I have seen, have been offering free admission and free parking. This event is taking parking away from Motor City Comic Con and has forced at least one visitor to park over a mile away at a Kroeger’s and walk for 15 minutes to simply wait in line. It is the responsibility of a convention staff to advise visitors of events going on in the area which might case for backups and other issues such as this.

The story of mishaps and miscommunications at Motor City Comic Con is ongoing and I will update this article as more information becomes available.

Both the Detroit Free Press and Bleeding Cool have picked up on this story.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 – What We Know So Far

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 is still over five months away, but this year’s show is shaping up to be one for the record books. The fourth year for the convention will be one which will open even more eyes to the type of comics-forward convention the Motor City can put on. Here is the information about Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 that we know so far.

detroit-fanfare

When?

Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con will be held from October 25 – October 27, 2013.

Where?

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 will be held at the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. This hotel used to be known as the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, but the location changed hands just after Detroit Fanfare 2012. Instead of simply having the left half of the first floor and a few rooms on the second floor, Detroit Fanfare Comic Con will not overtake the entire first floor of the Adoba Hotel Dearborn and a portion of the second floor. The convention will also still have full access to the Rotunda room on the top of the tower.

How Much?

Even though the convention is expanding, the promoters and staff are working hard to keep prices low. $15 will get you a one-day pass for the show. Weekend passes are only $20 and will get you in all three days. Children 12 and under will only be $5 on Friday and Saturday and will be free on Sunday. Parking will still be free.

Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 was able to negotiate great rates for those staying this year at the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. The special convention rate will be $87 a night (plus regular taxes and fees). Each room stayed in for the convention will receive two weekend passes (A $40 value)!

What is Returning?

The Shel Dorf Awards, the Detroit Fanfare Zombie Walk, and the 24 hour gaming room (in the Rotunda) will all return this year. You will still be able to get an arm-full of comics through Blood 4 Comics and potentially save a life in the process (which isn’t that what being a superhero is all about?). The live Rocky Horror Picture Show viewing will be back along with Speed Painting and the silent auction. Don’t forget about all of the Cosplay events, costume contests, and trick or treating on Sunday for the kids – they will return to this year’s Detroit Fanfare Comic Con as well. A mermaid will be swimming again in the pool. Oh, and the Official Convention Party will be rocking the walls of the Adoba!

What is New for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013?

Even though the calendar reads May (as of this writing), the planning for new activities, events, and surprises is in full swing for October. The biggest (and most noticeable) change will be the expansion of Detroit Fanfare Comic Con within the walls of the Adoba Hotel Dearborn. Crowds will be splitting off in more directions with the addition of the rooms on the right side of the hotel.

This year, the main showroom will focus on vendors which are directly related to comics. You will find the room filled with tons of comics, graphic novels, and comics-related merchandise. A second showroom on the opposite side of the hotel will be called the Bizarre Bazaar and will be the home of people who sell cool items, but are not directly related to comics. Artists Alley and the areas for Media Guests and Comics Guests will also be expanded.

Kid’s Day on Sunday is expanding with the addition of a Monster High Ice Cream Social, the Fairy Princess Training Camp, and the kids will also be able to try a hand at miniature construction with special LEGO building activities.

Guests?

There are many months to announce guests, but the promoters and staff at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con have already made some big announcements. Brian O’Halloran (Dante from Clerks) will return this year to be the official Master of Ceremonies Emeritus! Comic book guests announce include Jim Starlin, Tim Seeley, Ryan Stegman, Arvell Jones, Keith Pollard, Dirk Manning, and many more. More guests are being added every week, so there will be a full roster to tell everyone about as the months pass.

New Website! 😉

The new website for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con 2013 should be easier to maneuver than in past years. It will be updated on a regular basis to give you all of the information you need to know when you need to know it!

This will be a huge year for Detroit Fanfare Comic Con! Check out the convention’s website and this website for more information as it becomes available. The promoters and staff are looking forward to a record-breaking year which will show why Detroit Fanfare is Detroit’s Coolest Comic Con and why it is the best!

Comic Book Show

A comic book show is a one-day event which bring collectors together with vendors. Comic book shows are typically held at small venues such as a VFW, a fraternal hall, or even in a school gymnasium. There might be guests signing autographs or comic creators doing sketches, but everyone goes home at the end of the day.

Comic Book Convention

A comic book convention is held over multiple days at a venue or in a series of close venues. Since the conventions are longer than the show, convention promoters will take extra steps to make sure there is more to do so panels, contests, and extra guests are added.

The Main Difference Between Comic Book Shows and Comic Book Conventions

Someone suggested one time that the difference between a comic book show and a comic book convention is that conventions have panels. I have been to little local shows with panels, so that cannot be the difference between the two. The actual difference between the two is the length of time, and nothing else. If the vendors are present for one day, it is a comic book show. If the vendors and guests are there over multiple days, you would call it a comic book convention.

Should You Get a Table at a Comic Book Show?

I have met many comic book collectors and many comic book merchandise collectors who wonder if they should get tables at comic book shows or booths at comic book conventions to sell off parts of their collections. Comic book shows and comic book conventions are great ways to liquidate a collection for little money and little effort.

The Alternatives

Taking a large collection directly to a comic book store to sell it will most likely not get you the top dollar for your collection. This is the easiest way to move a collection. Selling a collection off in parts will typically make you more money, though, than selling it in one swoop.

Selling parts of a collection, or an entire collection, on a site like Craigslist can be time-consuming and your listing is likely to get lost among thousands of others in your area. Ebay and Amazon both take portions of your money.

A Little Work Goes a Long Way

I am not going to lie to you. Working a booth at a comic book show or comic book convention is sometimes hard. You might get pulled in two or three directions at one time. The payoff can be immense if you want to liquidate a collection. At a show, you might have hundreds of people stop by your booth while a comic book convention can bring thousands by. In many cases, you might make up your money in the first hour or two of the show or convention and everything else is pure profit while you watch the issues you don’t have room to store go home with other collectors.

If you are looking at liquidating your comic book collection or your comic book merchandise collection, I suggest looking at the opting or getting a table at a show or a booth at a comic book convention. You can get rid of tons of issues you can’t store anymore and make the most money doing it.

C2E2 Traffic Flow Issues

While I enjoyed C2E2, I noticed that the convention needs to improve upon traffic flow within the convention hall. There are certain issues the convention needs to look at to ensure everyone has the best time possible their entire time at the convention.

The front of C2E2

The front of C2E2

The Big Problem

One of the most important aspects of a convention for me is traffic flow. Nothing can ruin a convention trip more than needing to go to the bathroom and it taking 20 minutes to travel 200 feet because of congested crowds. On Friday and Sunday, traffic flow was great at C2E2. Saturday was a different story when it could take you what felt like an eternity to travel down an aisle. Also, traffic flow issues can lead to product being damaged or (worse yet?) personal injury.

Cosplay Alternative

Two things the organizers could do in the future to improve traffic flow. First off, many conventions are looking at the option of cosplay photo areas. If pictures may only be taken of cosplayers in certain areas, traffic flow can be improved by eliminating the moments when people ask for a picture to be taken with a cosplayer in the middle of an aisle.

Artist Alley

Artist Alley needs to be more inviting next year. The aisle separating Artist Alley from the vendor floor at C2E2 has many long booths which isolated the two parts of the convention from the other. While I am not a believer in feng shui, I have to admit that there was an energy break from the main floor to Artist Alley.  Larger flow points into Artist Alley will not only help alleviate some of the traffic flow problems at C2E2, it might also help the artists make some extra money.

Security

If you were entering C2E2 with a bag, security would force you to open the bag for inspection. Obviously, they were looking for some type of weapon. If your cosplay costume used fake weapons, they needed to be inspected as well. While I understand the need for this type of security, it bogged down the traffic flow of the convention. At the same time, there was an ironic aspect because you could purchase real weapons from dealers on the convention floor. It was as if the convention was saying, “We don’t want you bringing in anything which could harm someone. If you purchase something on our floor which could hurt someone, we are alright with that.

This picture was taken on Friday when crowds were not at maximum. By looking in the upper right corner, though, you can see how masses would have problems getting around at C2E2.

Hopefully, the promoters and planners at C2E2 will take a look at these issues and figure out ways to clear up the problems. C2E2 could compete with the bigger dogs on the block soon. C2E2 only needs to go through a few minor changes to become the show, and traffic flow is one of them.

C2E2 Impressions So Far (Opening)

C2E2 2013 has only been open for a few hours, but people are making a huge exodus to the event. Comic book readers and collectors, cosplayers, media guest fiends, and pop culture lovers are all finding at last a few hundred items each to focus their attention on.

The Vendors

There is a great selection of vendors at the show making it so the show appeals to a wide-range of types of fans. You will find almost everything ranging from comics to toys to gaming to posters to “unique” items which would take a half hour to describe. As a bit of a purist, I am concerned by what I consider to be a low level of comic book dealers. For a show with “Comic Con” in the name, I would have hopped for a dominance from comic book vendors.

Traffic Flow

I am amazed at this point how well traffic has been flowing overall. I have not seen too many stoppages in flow. That is an amazing feet at a show like this.

Artists Alley

I am always impressed by shows which have a variety of types of artists. There is the expected fair of comic book creators, but manga also has a strong showing as does impressionism, caricature artists, and other types of artists as well.

Pricing

Pricing of items at C2E2 are standard for what you might find at any major con. Of course, the pricing is up to the vendors and should not impact that experience of the con, but it is something people pay attention to.

Staff

A strong and knowledgeable staff is the backbone of a convention like C2E2. Some convention promoters focus on guests and vendors and completely forget about the staff. Not so with C2E2. The staff has been friendly and knows where to get information on anything you might need.

Cosplay

I will start posting pictures soon of the cosplay at C2E2. I am impressed by how many great costumes I have seen so far within the first few hours of the show.

If you are in the Chicago area, and are con heading to C2E2 – head down. Even after only a few hours, the show is a hit so far.
