Summer Glau on Arrow: More Buzz Than Sting

One of the hottest items of geeky news today is about Summer Glau on Arrow. The actress is going to be taking a reoccurring role on the show on The CW. While I am happy an actress I like has received work, I can’t get excited about Summer Glau on Arrow.

Summer Glau on Arrow: The Role

The actress will portray Isabel Rochev, Vice President of Acquisitions of Stellmoor International. The company she works for will push to take over Oliver Queen’s company. To this point, I have not seen confirmation as to how many times she will appear, but I do see a slight bump coming to at least her first episode on the series.

Summer Glau on Arrow Won’t Help Much

I cannot see Arrow receiving a significant bump from Summer Glau as the show is still on The CW. Arrow was The CW’s best show during the 2012-2013 season but it still only placed in at #130 on the overall list of shows during the season. Shows such as 1600 Penn, 666 Park Avenue, and Malibu Country were all ranked higher than Arrow last season and were cancelled without backlash or surprise. The final episode of the season only had 2.77 million viewers which was down significantly from the 4.14 million people which saw the premiere.

Summer Glau on Arrow: Sorry Summer

I first noticed Summer Glau on The 4400 which was a show my wife and I watched religiously. I later became a Firefly fan when a friend loaned me the box set. As I stated, I am happy she was able to find work, but is not going to be a blockbuster for her.

Why the Buzz Over Summer Glau on Arrow?

If Arrow is an overlookable show, why is there such a buzz over Summer Glau on Arrow? First off, Comic-Con International is only days away and the media companies want to jump on any news right now while we enter the “geek/nerd holiday season.” Oh, wait…there is only one real reason. Don’t believe the buzz as the actress and a handful of appearances will not save the show.

Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 Still Coming

Marvel Avengers Alliance has been teased for week, but there is still not very much that we know about the “next season” of the game. Let’s take a look at what we do know at this point.

Marvel Avengers Alliance Season2

Marvel Avengers Alliance Season2

The Teaser

Much has been said about the Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 teaser, but there are a few points which have escaped some of the forums I have looked in upon. First off, I love the comment in the upper right hand corner that points out how most heroes are still only 90 command points. The concern this raises is that whenever a comic book company points out how their prices are still low, the prices go up.

Next, note that all of the characters in the promo are third and fourth level villains. Razorback, Doctor Bong, Two-Gun and Hate Monger are characters we rarely see explored. Maybe they will finally get their chance to shine.

Since Armless Tiger Man and Lady Octopus are left standing in the picture before all of the “slain” characters, I am led to believe they will be among the last villains in Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2.

Reptil is up on the top right corner. Hopefully he becomes a playable character. My daughter loves him.

What Characters are Coming

Marvel Avengers Alliance Wiki reports that Son of Satan, Doctor Voodoo, and Mon Knight are all characters on their way in the game. Son of Satan and Doctor Voodoo, though, have been on the block for months. Of course, they could be released through PvP or through a Special Mission, but Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 would be a great time to release them as well.

Changes Already Seen?

We have seen the group boss appear over the last month and sponsored missions. I expect more of these when Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2 begins. What more might we see?

Is Anyone Left?

Ok, this sections is going to have to look at the game and look at what has not come out yet. Which major characters have not been seen yet in Marvel Avengers Alliance which should come out in Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2? Where is Venom? I would love to see the Silver Surfer and Galactus. Maybe we could see Fin Fang Foom of some of the characters from the Guardians of the Galaxy. As a fan of Canadian characters, how about Sasquatch? We have not seen the Super Skrull or any of the Skrulls for that matter.

There are so many major characters the game has not touched upon yet that few should believe that there is nobody left to introduce in Marvel Avengers Alliance Season 2. I just hope they can get the ball rolling a little faster as I am chomping at the bit with anticipation.

Justice League #22 is My Pick of the Week!

This is a strong week for comics, but Justice League #22 easily pulled away with the victory. Honorable mentions need to go to titles such as Batman, Uncanny X-Men, and Superman Unchained (yes, I am actually reading Superman Unchained. I surprises me too) for having strong showings. Justice League #22 is not my Pick of the Week just because it starts out the Trinity War. It is my Pick of the Week because it was a great issue which should be noted.

Justice League #22

Justice League #22

Still Hope for Those Who Have Not Read Justice League #22 Spoilers

Yes, there are many sites which have leaked certain aspects of the story told in Justice League #22. Even those sites which have given the most spoilers have not been able to touch on the entire scope of what is going on in the issue. Let’s explore without major spoilers.

Justice League #22 is Packed

I have to commend Geoff Johns on Justice League #22. There are not very many writers who could have pulled off such a packed story. There were no filler pages or panels in this story as the reader is sped from one location to another to give as many levels of the story as possible. The spoilers have only covered a few aspects of this issue which are of note, but someone who has been following the story leading into the Trinity War will have dozens of bits to talk about in Justice League #22.

The Means

There is a quick conversation between Superman and Wonder Woman which delves into their means for dealing with villains. The conversation might get lost by some readers as it is only a few panels long, but within those handfuls of words, Johns is able to point out a major difference between the two characters. There are other points in Justice League #22 which also show how different the players in this war really are.

Superman, Wonder Woman, and Pandora

Another short conversation which needs to be paid attention to happens between Superman, Wonder Woman, and Pandora. The crossing of lines between mythology, psychology, and “reality” is interesting to see between these three characters. Conversations such as this, and the one mentioned previously, are often forgotten about by writers, but should not be. These explorations into the character’s minds help to define them.

The WTF? Moments

Yes, Justice League #22 has a good handful of WTF? moments. A few are still leaving me scratching my head and waiting for the next issue in the Trinity War series. There are enough questions left in people’s minds which will keep them around for at least one more comic in the Trinity War run.

A Concern Addressed?

One of my biggest concerns about the Trinity War was that it was not going to have many grabbing moments to keep the reader’s attention. I have been worried that it was simply going to be a battle series and nothing more. If the rest of the Trinity War is able to deliver like Justice League #22, it will be a wild ride many of us will remember for years. The bar has been set by Geoff Johns’ writing and amazing art by Ivan Reis. We have to wait until next week to see if the story can continue at this current level.

My Wishlist for Comic-Con International 2013

With Comic-Con International in San Diego quickly approaching, a handful of items are coming to mind which I hope comic book publishers shed more light upon. This is my wish list for Comic-Con International.

Comic-Con International

Comic-Con International

Marvel

Marvel has added a few new dates to their calendar for movies. While I am sure they will announce both movies at Comic-Con International, I am hoping one of them will be the Doctor Strange movie. The Sorcerer Supreme’s fans have waited too long for this moment.

I have stated before, but I should state again that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs to dominate Comic-Con International. I would love to see longer videos of the show and at least hints to who some of the superheroes and supervillains are that we will see on the show.

The September War is quickly approaching, and one of the upcoming highlights is X-Men: Battle of the Atom. It would behoove Marvel to highlight this major crossover to show how it will bring the big guns out to battle DC Comics in the war for market share.

DC Comics

I am sure a ton of time will be spent on Villain Month, Forever Evil, and Trinity War, but DC Comics needs to place a focus on the media entertainment arm of the company. We need to hear about some movies in the works and get some answers to the questions and rumors we have heard about potential movies coming from DC Comics. Comic-Con International would be the best time to set things straight.

Also, DC Comics needs to use some of its time at Comic-Con International to highlight Arrow. The show keeps getting swept under the rug and is the one show which DC Comics has to make an impact with. Why spend all of the money making the movie if the entertainment side of DC is not going to promote it with all their might?

Image

I know that Comic-Con International will be used to exploit Image’s ace in The Walking Dead. I am sure some new characters and teasers will come from the company. I am hoping for more, though. Image has a great lineup of comics right now and they should be pushed equally to The Walking Dead. Image wants to take the next step ever since it took the #3 spot in market share. Comic-Con International is the place to do it.

IDW

IDW made major waves at the Diamond Retailers Summit and C2E2 by officially announcing its new Cartoon Network comics, the finalization of Locke & Key, and other projects in the works. I would love to see the guys and gals over at IDW Publishing get a huge burst due to a huge announcement. I hope they are able to make major waves this year.

Dark Horse

I would like to see Dark Horse prove it is a company of more than just Star Wars comics. While the line has made the company a competitor for many years, with the Disney takeover of Star Wars, the current deal to produce the comics might be the final one the company sees. Just in case, Dark Horse needs to highlight why its other comics deserve as much attention as the company hopes they will get.

The Smaller Companies

Maybe this will be the year that a 1%er makes a major coup. I would clap if the headlines about Comic-Con International focused on a smaller company which does not get enough respect. Do I have any companies I am personally pushing for? Yes, but I would never tell.

Dragon*Con Boycott Officially Called Off – Developing

According to the Facebook page of the Dragon*Con boycott, the boycott has officially been called off. Dragon*Con has become a new company, Dragon*Con Inc. and has completely cut Ed Kramer out of the picture. The site is also reporting that Ed Kramer’s attorney has stated that he will sue Dragon*Con, so there is sure to be more to this story in the days and weeks to come.

Draon*Con - Ed Kramer

Draon*Con – Ed Kramer

If you are unfamiliar with this story, I suggest reading Kelly’s take on Ed Kramer, Dragon*Con, and the Dragon*Con boycott. I will have more information as it becomes available.

Gaming, Toys, and Conventions Now Part of Collector’s Corner

You might have noticed that the Collector’s Corner section on WonderWorldComics.com has moved slightly. You also might have noticed that Collector’s Corner is now split into multiple sections. This is a website project I have been devising and working on over the last few days. Why did I do it?

New Collector's Corner sections!

New Collector’s Corner sections!

The New Collector’s Corner Sections

Instead of simply being one general area for Collector’s Corner, the category has been broken into four separate subcategories. The subcategories are Comic Book Collecting, Toy Collecting, Gaming Collecting, and Conventions. You will see an arrow next to the words “Collector’s Corner” in the top menu on the front page. Hovering over the tab will show the new sections. I have spent much of the day moving the old articles from Collector’s Corner into the appropriate subcategories.

Why Did Wonderworld Comics Do This?

Not only does Wonderworld Comics specialize in comic books, the company also specializes in collectible toys, collectible gaming (card and tabletop), and in many other areas as well. Since our store is so diversified, I felt it was time for the website to become more diversified as well.

No Worries

Don’t worry about the site being overrun with articles about everything other than comics. The main focus on the site will be on comics, comic book collecting, and comic book news. One of the new sections is labeled Conventions, but there have been convention articles since the beginning of content on this site. Those convention articles did not overwhelm, so don’t worry about toy and gaming articles taking over.

The Plans

I have some interesting ideas for the Gaming Collecting subcategory. I have been playing role-playing games for almost three decades and have been collecting gaming books for about 15 years. I have various types of gaming collecting articles lined up, even some which would interest people who have never gamed before.

The Toy Collecting section could be expansive, and might be one day. For now, I am going to keep the articles general, but will focus on some various lines of toys such as LEGO, GI Joe, Masters of the Universe, Transformers, and some of the other classics.

Now that all of the behind-the-scenes planning and implementing of these sections from the last few days is out of the way, I can get back to doing what I really love to do – delivering content which you will not find anywhere else.

Speak Up Against the Bastardization of Comic Book Conventions

Over the years, most comic book conventions have been bastardized to the point that even comic book fans have forgotten about the base these comic book conventions have in the comic book industry. While there are glimmers of hope on the comic book convention scene, such as comics-forward conventions like Detroit Fanfare Comic Con, Gem City Comic-Con, Baltimore Comic Con, Heroes Con, the Midwest Comic Book Association,  and the conventions and shows which place comic book fans first – I see major changes in the future for comic book conventions which are inevitable unless WE speak up.

544328_10151448354451359_1628468336_nDropping the Comic-Con

I would not be surprised if major comic book conventions begin dropping the tags of “Comic-Con” or “Comic Con” from their titles. I can see the conventions becoming so wrapped up in the media guests that they try to “rebrand” themselves as either media shows or as some other type of “all inclusive” show or convention. In true name, the conventions would become so bastardized that they would literally forget their parenting force.

Taking the Comics Out of Comic Book Conventions

Right now, the comic book industry is seeing better numbers than it has in over a generation. What will happen to the industry if it is essentially limited to only comics-forward conventions? How will sales sag? As these bastardized conventions spend more money, time, and effort focusing on media events and guests, why would they even be interested in signing comic book creators and vendors? Most cities do not have comics-forward conventions to begin with, so average fans would not have conventions and shows to go to that would be their own in their own areas.

What WE Need To Do

Notice, I am saying that WE need to do something. This fight is not something this website can do on its own. Every single comic book reader, creator, and collector should send some type of message to the bastardized comic book conventions about how the tide has changed and how our conventions have been stolen from us in the favor of trying to appeal to a larger audience. We should let convention promoters and planners know that they should not forget the market which put them on the map in the first place. We need to get together and fight for our conventions before they are won over by the Starbucks-sipping d-bags who care more about a current trend than one of the longest lasting forms of entertainment on the market today.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and San Diego Comic-Con International

Bar none, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs to be the talk of the town come San Diego Comic-Con International. With the show launching within months on ABC, the network and Marvel need to make sure that you hear about the show at every turn.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. does have a cool logo

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. does have a cool logo

Other Announcements

Of course, there will be a myriad of other announcements made at San Diego Comic-Con International. Companies will be announcing movies, different shows, and new toys and video games will be prepped for a holiday release. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needs to be the center attraction to ensure that people are hungry for the new show.

In Marvel’s Favor

There are a few aspects in Marvel’s favor. First off, The Walking Dead does not come out until October, so Image is not as pressed to make a major impact. Secondly, the rumors have been flying around the Internet as to who it is in the trailers and which characters might be seen on the show. Finally, ABC has been pushing hard to make sure that ABC fans see as much as possible of Clark Gregg and the other stars of the show. The network has built a frenzy which now needs to be cashed in upon. Marvel is able to strike while the iron is hot.

Time

There have been many months since the official announcement of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so the company has had a long time to prep for San Diego Comic-Con International. If you think that the publishing companies start thinking about San Diego Comic-Con International within the last few weeks before the convention, you are wrong. They start planning a year in advance or more. I would not be going out on a limb by saying that Marvel was probably prepping announcements for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International before officially announcing Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The ball is in Marvel’s court when it comes to the announcement of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at San Diego Comic-Con International. I can’t wait to see what announcements they make, and how those announcements make the other publishers squirm.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 is My Pick of the Week!

It was a hard decision to make this week, but I have to make my Pick of the Week Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1. It was a hard decision because there are some really good issues this week. If you are planning on following the Trinity War, though, this is an essential issue as it preludes the Trinity War – which preludes Villain Month and Forever Evil. As usual, I am going to do everything I can to stay away from giving you spoilers.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1

History

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 does a strong job of explaining the character’s backstory and explain her importance in the “history” of the DC Universe. I really like the way we see the progression of the character through the years in each panel. You will understand this statement more when you read the issue.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 and Mythology

The backstory of Pandora, as presented in Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 in the issue comes pretty close to matching the mythological story of the character. She is the one who made the mistake which unleashed the Seven Deadly Sin on humanity. Since she released the sins, and thus destroyed humanity, only she can make the world right again.

The Precursor to Trinity War, Villain Month, and Forever Evil

Since Pandora could be considered as the root of all evil, it would be her fault that villains roam the Earth. Her struggle will lead to the Trinity War, Villain Month, and Forever Evil. In future years, Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 may be looked upon as a key issue which “started it all.” Of course, only time will tell that for sure.

One Issue with the Issue

On the fifth story page, we see a frame on the bottom right showing Pandora kneeling down and screaming as she realizes what she has done. Her right foot is exposed in the frame. The problem is, her foot is backwards. If you are kneeling, your big toe is on the inside close to your body. Her toes, and the arch of her foot are inversed. Now I understand that mistakes are made and make it past editing. In fact, I know that even if I read an article five times, it might still make it out with an error. It just surprised me that this mistake made it past so many people (penciler, inker, colorist, and editorial staff). Either way, pick up the issue today.

Why Public Domain Stories are Popular With Comic Book Publishers

Simply put, comic book companies love to create comics based on stories in the public domain. Properties such as The Wizard of Oz, Conan, Frankenstein, and Dracula have been a mainstay of the comic book industry for many years. The works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, H.P. Lovecraft, and HG Wells have been visited over and over again in comic book form. Why such an interest in these public domain works?

cthulhu4The Cost of a Story in the Public Domain

First off, using a story in the public domain is free. Comic book publishing companies do not need to pay out tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to the original creators of the story. They are free to use the storyline or characters at will without having to worry about a descendant or copyright owner asking for money down the road.

Free Interpretation

Public domain works are free for interpretation. If a comic book publishing company wants to have Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, and Captain Nemo fight space monkeys, that is completely fine as there is not an owner of the properties to speak up and complain. Of course, fans can complain. That leads into the next reason why comic book publishing companies love public domain works.

Instant Fan Recognition

Stories that are in the public domain often have large followings or are familiar with readers. As a fan of H.P. Lovecraft and his work, I have found myself picking up comics simply because they are based on one of his stories. As a Sherlock Holmes fan, I find myself reading comics based on his stories to see if they creator’s interpretations are similar to my own. I might already know the story being used, but I might want to see how it is being used.

The Honor

I know some comic book creators who consider it an honor to work on comics based on the stories they grew up reading. Using stories in the public domain is a free way to get recognition from fans, and to keep some creators happy.

Time

Creating comic books which will do well in the market takes time. Months before the new issue of X-Men or Batman hits the shelves, a team of planners has figured out what will happen next. By using stories in the public domain, many of the planning steps (and chefs in the kitchen) can be eliminated. What could be better than a project which saves time, saves money, automatically will have name recognition with fans, and will keep creators happy all while allowing for freedom in interpretation? Comic book companies love public domain stories, and always will.

Comic Book Art Portfolio Submission Tips (Ongoing)

How to submit a comic book art portfolio for review? This is a question which all aspiring artists should consider during their career. While not an artist myself, I have seen many would-be comic book artists botch their reviews by submitting their comic book art portfolios incorrectly. While these tips will not improve your art, they will improve your chances of being reviewed.

pencilsComic Book Art Portfolio: Know When to Submit

Some comic book companies will set up booths for comic book art portfolio reviews at conventions. You are free to bring in your work to be critiqued at these events. I have seen lines before at these types of booths, so be patient.

If you see a comic book creator or someone from a comic book publishing company, don’t simply push your portfolio in their face. I have been to dinner with comic book creators before and seen someone pull a portfolio out unannounced as creators are trying to enjoy a meal. Creators and executives are not on call 24 hours a day to review your work. Remember that.

Comic Book Art Portfolio: Organize

A few years ago, I overheard Marvel Editor Lauren Sankovitch speaking to an aspiring artist about submitting a portfolio. One of the key tips she made was to make sure the comic book art portfolio was organized. She stated that pages should have some type of order, and be submitted in a binder or in a portfolio package. Simply a stack of papers with drawings or doodles on them would not impress anyone.

Comic Book Art Portfolio: Diversify

I followed an aspiring artist around at C2E2 this year as he had comic book creators and publishers review his work. I noticed his portfolio was filled with only pictures of Batman in action. Many of the reviewers pointed this out and wanted to see any work he had with him that did not simply focus on The Dark Knight. He stated that he only wanted to draw Batman. He was told that if he wanted to draw Batman, he would probably have to start on lower titles and work his way up. He needed to prove he could draw other characters first.

Comic Book Art Portfolio: LISTEN!!!

I have heard aspiring artists try to argue with, or correct, reviewers of their work. Talk about an automatic turn off. Reviewers will typically want you to succeed. Make sure you listen to them and all they have to say. Don’t try to argue with them. Remember, they have already made it and can help you do the same.

Call to Action: Gerry Conway’s Comics Equity Project

Yesterday, a new blog appeared called the Comics Equity Project spearheaded by legendary comics creator Gerry Conway. The goal of the blog is to request that fans attempt to contact creators when characters the creators brought to life are used in DC Comics projects.

Time for a Call to Action!

Time for a Call to Action!

Precursor to the Comics Equity Project

Back in the 1970s, DC Comics went down a revolutionary path by stating that creators of comic book characters could share in a piece of the pie. A small portion of money made by characters would be given to the creators.

Why is the Comics Equity Project Needed?

DC Comics does not spend time contacting comic book creators about how their characters are being used. Hence, most creators don’t know when their characters are being used. In Gerry Conway’s case, some of the characters he created were being used on the TV series, Arrow on The CW. He would not have known about the characters being used if fans had not alerted him.

What the Creators Get

When a creator contacts DC Comics to prove one of his or her characters is being used, DC Comics will give the creator a part of the money coming in from the character as long as the creator holds that type of contract with the company. This money is not retroactive, so the creator is only owed the money made after he or she contacts DC Comics.

The Comics Equity Project Remembers Creators

Even though we hold many comic book creators in high regard – as far as even considering many as heroes – most do not make money hand-over-fist. The Comics Equity Project gives us (the fans) the opportunity to show our support of comic book creators and to remind them that we are thankful for the characters and stories they created over the years. The Comics Equity Project is our call to action to support those which have given us countless hours of entertainment over the years.

To learn more about the Comics Equity Project, or to contact creators whose characters are being used at DC Comics, please follow this link.

Comic Book Industry Awards: Eisner Awards, Harvey Awards, and Shel Dorf Awards

There are many comic book industry awards, but there are three which stand out from the rest. They stand out from others for various reasons. When talking about comic book industry awards, though, what are the differences between the Eisner Awards, the Harvey Awards, and the Shel Dorf Awards?

eisneraward002Comic Book Industry Awards: The Eisner Awards

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are given each year at Comic-Con International in San Diego. The award was first instituted in 1988 and named after Will Eisner. The Eisner Award is typically considered the pinnacle award in the comic book industry as it awards creative achievement. Nominees and winners are decided through secret ballot by a panel of judges.

Comic Book Industry Awards: The Harvey Awards

The Harvey Awards are named after Harvey Kurtzman and are the successor of the Kirby Awards which had been around since 1985. The nominees and winners are selected through open-ballot. Only comic book industry creators can nominate or vote for Harvey awards. This makes the Harvey Awards special for many creators because they have been nominate or voted on by their peers. Currently, the Harvey Awards are held each year at Baltimore Comic-Con.

Comic Book Industry Awards: The Shel Dorf Awards

The Shel Dorf Awards are the newest of the awards on this list as they were established in 2010 at the first Detroit Fanfare. The awards are still held each year at Detroit Fanfare Comic Con. The unique aspect of this particular series of comic book industry awards is that they are nominated and voted upon by fans. Some creators look at the Shel Dorf Awards as being significant in a different way from the Harvey Awards and the Eisner Awards since they show the support of the fans.

Three different comic book industry awards with different qualities and types of significance. Even though they might award creators in the same types of categories, the way the awards are decided upon are quite different.

Observations on Forever Evil and Villain Month

Now that all of the secrets are out in the open, I guess it is time for me to make my observations on Villain Month and Forever Evil. This major attack from DC Comics during the September War is sure to shake everything up. There are some aspects of Forever Evil and Villain MOnth which surprise me, some which upset me, and some which just make me shake my head.

Forever Evil

Forever Evil

The Forever Evil Promotional Picture

Where in the heck is Joker? He should be right next to Lex Luthor leading the masses. Also, note that both Harley Quinn and Deadshot, of the Suicide Squad, are both in the picture along with Catwoman – all of which are supposed to be superheroes now.

The Reasoning Behind the Higher Price of Villain Month Comics

The special 3D covers are more expensive to create than regular covers, but DC Comics did not need to put those 3D covers on in the first place. I am not going out on a limb by saying that most fans would have picked up a larger number of DC Comics in September without them. On top of that, DC Comics could not figure out a less-expensive way to create the tens of thousands of covers they are putting on the comics to save the reader money?

The Lower Criminals

I do like the idea of giving some extra face time to some of the lower criminals in the DC Universe during Villain Month. Joker’s Daughter, The Ventriloquist (he will never be a A-lister, or even a B-lister, no matter what DC tells me), Parasite, and Dial E are all welcome characters. It is good that DC Comics is not just touching upon the main evil characters from each title.

The Lost Titles

I wish DC Comics would have included some of the other titles in some major way during Villain Month. Constantine, the Phantom Stranger, Earth’s Finest, and the Suicide Squad are just a few of the titles which missed this bus. How many fans will feel disenfranchised during September?

DC ComicsTrinity War Jitters and Concerns

The beginning of the Trinity War is upon DC Comics, and the publisher has promised us a huge crossover which will change many of the aspects of the DC Universe. In the past, I have discussed the concern about how the Trinity War might relaunch the old universe, but with the official announcement of Villain Month and Forever Evil, those concerns have been laid to rest. There are a few concerns about the Trinity War, though, which have come to the surface in recent weeks which should be addressed.

The Trinity War triptych

The Trinity War triptych

Actual Start Date

According to word I have received from our Detroit area comic book store, there are questions about the official start date of the Trinity War. Many readers, myself included, purchases issues of Justice League, Justice League of America, and Justice League Dark in the past week expecting at least a precursor to the Trinity War. Some readers may have actually believed the crossover was beginning this month. Instead, the crossover event begins in July.

Possible Cause

If you remember back a few month to when Diamond Previews previewed Trinity of Sin: Pandora, a June release was given. Instead, Pandora will not hit store shelves until July. Also, the free publicity cards which were sent to comic book stores to pass out showed a June release date for Pandora. Poor communication and/or postponing dates should always cause for concern.

Lack of Support Sales

I do like the statement that DC Comics has made about retailers being allowed to return unsold copies of Justice League Dark as long as the orders match the numbers purchased for Justice League and/or Justice League of America. On the negative side, the Trinity War also crosses into Trinity of Sin: Pandora, Trinity of Sin: Phantom Stranger, and Constantine. Support should be given for these other titles as well since the casual reader who is trying to continue the story from Justice League or Justice League of America might not consider picking up these lower titles.

Will People Really Care About the Trinity War?

We already know about one of the major outcomes of the Trinity War. It will launch Villain Month and Forever Evil. Since we know A (where we are) and C (where we are going), will as many people be concerned about B (how we get from A to C)?

The Overall Cost

Many of us are going to be spending more money than usual during Villain Month. All of the DC Comics titles are going to be $3.99, and all of the major titles are going to have multiple .1 issues during the month. Readers might decide to pass up this crossover and save their money. Personally, if it were not for the fact that this crossover involves DC’s Dark Universe, I would probably not pick it up. Since it involves so many of the titles I am already getting, I might as well pick up the rest. I can see how the average reader might pass it by.

Marvel Mutants “M” Word: More Reality in Comics?

Kitty Pride made comments in this week’s issue of All-New Mutants which would point to a deeper statement which would lead us to believe that Marvel mutants are no longer going to be referred to as mutants. Using the term “The ‘M’ word,” is sure to be controversial with many readers, but I think it is time for Marvel to distance itself from the term.

Marvel's market share is dropping

Marvel’s market share is dropping

Marvel Mutants NOW

Remember, we are in a period right now called Marvel NOW in which our favorite characters are thrust into a Brave New World which is more reflective of the real world than ever before. Marvel mutants have been thrust into this modern world in more ways than one with the original X-Men living and breathing in the modern day. Figuring out different terminology for the Marvel mutants right now makes since it melds with the continuing trend towards being more politically correct.

The Goal of Political Correctness

The goal of political correctness is to eliminate words which exclude people from the rest of society and to eliminate words which might cause a feeling of discomfort of disenfranchisement. I am not going to list all of the terms here as you should know most of them on your own, but remember that the end goal is to make everyone feel like they are on equal footing regardless of race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or origin. If Marvel is going to continue to try to make the superhero world as close to the real world, why wouldn’t it make sense to extend political correctness to the Marvel mutants?

No Matter What Side of the Aisle You are On

In the end, it really does not matter which side of the political correctness aisle you sit on when dealing with Marvel mutants and “The ‘M’ word.” You might be upset that Marvel is trying to make some type of statement, or you might be upset that Marvel is trying to change a term which we have been using for decades. In the end, you should be happy that Marvel is dragging an issue out of the real world and exploring the implication in the Marvel Universe. You should celebrate the discussion Marvel is beginning and look forward to seeing both sides of the debate unfold in future issues. The Marvel Universe grows when it encompasses a little more reality in it.

The Poker-Inspired Superheroes (and Villains)

Marvel and DC Comics have always made it their advocacy to take on several social issues. Many of the superheroes and super-villains we idolize were, at some point, conceptualized according to certain debatable topics, one of which is poker. The card game has even been vital in the character development, and even story progression, of some of our favorite heroes or foes. Poker had also been inculcated in the identity or history of some Marvel and DC Comics characters.

Here are a few characters in the Marvel and DC Comics Multiverses who had poker involved either in their creation or in the development of their stories:

These superheroes are known for playing poker.

These superheroes are known for playing poker.

Gambit

If you have been an avid follower of the X-Men series, just the mention of playing cards would already have you thinking of Gambit. With his own deck of playing cards as his main choice of weaponry (aside from a Bo staff), it would be quite illogical not to think of Gambit as a knowledgeable poker player. Gambit’s initial personality also seems to be inspired by how you should approach professional poker players, with reservation and alertness. In a Marvel forum over at ComicVine.com, Gambit was mentioned several times after someone asked who would be Marvel’s best poker player.

Iron Man

Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, is truly one pompous and extravagant character especially in recent movie adaptations. If ever there will be a character who you should expect to see in the Bellagio Las Vegas for the Partypoker World Poker Tour or in Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino for the World Series of Poker, it would most probably be Mr.Stark. He has the financial capabilities to be a daring professional card player. Even in the 2008 Iron Man movie, Stark missed an awarding ceremony as he was playing poker over at Ceasar’s Palace.

The Thing

It may not be obvious at first, but the strongest member of the Fantastic Four loves playing poker. Ben Grimm’s gentle giant stereotype is perfect for maintaining a great ruse when playing. In one of the issues of the series Thing v2, Grimm even organized a poker tournament amongst other superheroes of the Marvel Universe in celebration of his Bar Mitzvah. His Bar Mitzvah version is for his 13 years of existence after being transformed into The Thing.

Batman

Just like Iron Man, Bruce Wayne is not someone who turns down a challenge especially when someone questions his (financial?) powers. However, what really includes Batman in this list is his arch-rival, The Joker. It’s his and Joker’s interactions that are very symbolic of how poker rounds operate. It’s always about “who-outsmarts-who.”And as ComicBooked.com opinionates in one of their articles, the Dark Knight has faced so many criminal geniuses and deranged psychopaths that it instilled in him the skill to determine even the most minute of emotions. This skill set also helped him achieve his almost-catatonic expressions, an almost perfect poker face.

On many occasions, comic book artists have something deeper to convey when they embed simple activities like poker into their panels. It can be their way of expressing social awareness or understanding. At times, it can also be representations of bigger issues. Simply put, just keep an open mind when reading comics.

September War: X-Men: Battle of the Atom – WOW!

X-Men: Battle of the Atom has my popping. Marvel Previews gives us a glimpse at Marvel’s offerings during the September War, and I cannot hold my excitement back. Everyone thought DC Comics would rule the September War with Villain Month and Forever Evil, but Marvel might just shake things up enough with X-Men: Battle of the Atom to keep DC Comics out of the pinnacle spots on the Diamond Top 100.

X-Men: Battle of the Atom is Coming!

X-Men: Battle of the Atom is Coming!

What is X-Men: Battle of the Atom?

Quick synopsis: The X-Men from the future come to the present to send the X-Men from the past back to the past in an attempt to fix history, the present, and the future. Marvel is pushing X-Men: Battle of the Atom as the biggest X-Men crossover of all time.

Ohhhhh

X-Men: Battle of the Atom is going to be a ten-part crossover which will include its own title, All-New X-Men, X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, and Wolverine & The X-Men. I should complement the company for having a major crossover which does not float into dozens of different titles. At this point, it is contained to ten issues, so it is not something which will put too much of a cramp on reader’s pocketbooks.

Ahhhhh

Yes, I was someone who gave the early win in the September War to DC Comics, but the full and official introduction of X-Men: Battle of the Atom splits my decision for the month. At this point, it is way too early to tell who will have the tops spots during the most important month of the year (if you are not sure why it is the most important month of the year for comics, read this). All I know at this point is that I am going to be dropping a lot of money at our Detroit area comic shop in September.

What If A vs. X: Hopefully This Begins a Trend

Next month, we will see the introduction of What If A vs. X. This is an interesting concept which follows a suggestion I have had for years. When major crossovers happen, fans should have the opportunity to know what might have happened if certain events had gone differently. It might even behoove Marvel to take a look at other What If options like What If A vs. X.

AvX

AvX

Secret Wars

There were a few issues of the initial What If line which centered on the original Secret Wars crossover. My personal favorite involved the changes which took place in the alternate universe where Doctor Doom kept Beyonder’s powers and was able to become an unstoppable menace. The other popular offering explored what might have happened if the heroes became stranded on Battleworld due to a battle between the universal titans which saw Galactus and Beyonder kill each other. Those who believe the idea of having What If A vs. X is original, it has been done before…and should be done more often.

Don’t Get Me Wrong

I don’t believe that every crossover should be given a line like What If A vs. X, but many of the major ones should. Later this year, we will see the dawning of X-Men Battle of the Atom. A What If line off of that product would make sense. I would not suggest a What If line off of the Age of Ultron since the fallout will run itself like a What If line since the space time continuum is borked.

I have always been a fan of the idea of What If lines, and I am looking forward to What If A vs. X. Hopefully, the line is successful enough for Marvel to take a look at it again in the future for other crossovers.

Diamond Previews #298 is My Pick of the Week!

I am veering a little bit with my comic pick of the week this week by naming Diamond Previews as the comic book (as in book about comics) you need to pick up this week. Diamond Previews #298 (and the free issue of Marvel Previews which will come with it) covers September and the comics which will comprise the September War! This is the more important issue of Diamond Previews this year.

Forever Evil

Forever Evil

Automatic Add-On

It should be understood that Marvel Previews is automatically part of this Pick of the Week article since you get a copy of Marvel Previews free when you purchase Diamond Previews.

The Two Covers

As you probably know, there are two covers for Diamond Previews #298. One highlights The Star Wars #1 which will be the first issue in a miniseries using George Lucus’ original plans for the movie series. The other cover highlights DC Comics Forever Evil and Villain Month.

Why You Should Read Diamond Previews #298?

I have always been a supporter of reading Diamond Previews, but especially this particular issue since it covers the events of the September War.

  • From DC Comics, you will see all of the covers for the special .1 issues. You will also get a quick blurb about each issue to help you decide which ones you will be reading in September. The variant covers for Forever Evil have not been finalized as of printing, but at least you can gain an understanding of the universe-changing miniseries.
  • Marvel uses its Previews to officially introduce the world to X-Men Battle of the Atom. Three generations of X-Men will battle in an attempt to set the team’s storyline and history straight. It is being labeled as the biggest X-Men crossover of all time. This is a huge hit against DC Comics Villain Month and should excite many of the team’s fans.
  • Dark Horse uses Diamond Previews #298 to officially introduce The Star Wars. This series will revolve around ol’ George’s original vision for the movie series. I have a feeling that this comic series is going to have the world talking during the September War.
  • IDW Publishing highlights the release of the Powerpuff Girls which it hopes will make an impact on the market like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Danger Girl fans will also be interested to read about Danger Girl: The Chase #1.
  • Image Comics uses part of its space to discuss Sex Criminals #1 by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky. Rat Queens #1 is also on its way, but I am going to discuss a little more about that in the upcoming weeks.
  • Afterlife with Archie? I have not read an Archie comic in probably 25 years, but I might find that I have to pick up the new “Archie with Zombies” style comic coming our from Archie Comics. Even though the first issue is not coming out until October, Diamond Previews #298 gives a shout to it and an interesting splash.
  • Boom! Studios makes sure you know that Sons of Anarchy is being added to its portfolio. Any comic which can draw in fans from outside the comic book community has the support of this website.
  • Kings Watch is a crossover using some of the top characters from Dynamite and might bring some more interest to the company’s major titles. The crossover miniseries is discussed in Diamond Previews #298.
  • There are other premiere issues coming out from various companies which were not discussed here. There are also offerings from companies which are not mentioned here as well.

The September War is so important to the comic book publishers because they know if they do not do something big, the comic book community will only be talking about two things in October – The Walking Dead and Detroit Fanfare Comic Con!

Boom! Studios Louder with Archaia

Boom! Studios

Boom! Studios

Deadline is reporting that Boom! Studios has purchased Archaia. Deadline reports that Boom! Studios might be nipping at the heels of Marvel and DC Comics. This points to one of the problems with getting comic book news from companies which do not specialize in comics. Deadline apparently missed the fact that Image, IDW Publishing, Dark Horse, and Dynamite are all ahead of Boom! Studios. While Archaia is a strong company with good titles, it does not hold at least 1% of the market – which would be enough to move Boom! Studios into the fifth or sixth overall position.

On a varied note, I look forward to seeing what Boom! Studios does with Archaia. At the very least, Boom! Studios makes a statement to the world that it is ready to move up and will spend money to do so.

Huge Week at Wonderworld Comics in Taylor!

Dave Santia

Speed Painter Dave Santia will return to Wonderworld Comics on Tuesday and he will have his easel and brushes with him. He will be creating two secret pieces of art in honor of Tyler Mane. Make sure you don’t miss him because he fills the house every time he paints. He mixes rock and roll, pop culture, and his ability to paint faster than anyone you have seen to create masterful works of art.

Josh Blalock, Devil’s Due Publishing, and the Merch Sparx Tour

Josh Blalock, founder and publisher of Devil’s Due Publishing, will be at the store this week with his Mercy Sparx tour. The tour will officially be at Wonderworld Comics on Wednesday, but he will also be stopping by the store Tuesday evening to check out the Tyler Mane event.

Mercy Sparx is a character born somewhere between Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell. She is on a mission from God to hunt down angels hiding out on Earth. Josh will be talking about the project along with other projects from Devil’s Due Publishing including Halloween: Nightdance (one of my favorite Gems of the Warehouse).

You can learn more about Devil’s Due Publishing by following this link.

Big Releases at Wonderworld Comics

Two BIG issues come out this Wednesday when we see the release of Age of Ultron #10ai and Batman/Superman #1. We have a handful of Batman/Superman variants coming out as well. These are two of the most anticipated titles of the summer, so make sure you stop by to check them out.

Other issues of note coming out are Atomic Robo: The Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #1 (of 5) will be coming from Red 5, Godzilla Rulers of the Earth #1 from IDW, Grimm Fairy Tales Annual 2013 from Zenescope, the final Hack/Slash Trade Paperback will be in from Image, Superman Vol. 1: What Price Tomorrow from DC Comics, Uncanny #1 from Dynamite, and the Trinity War will begin playing out in the pages of Justice League Dark, Justice League of America, and Justice League.

You can see other titles releasing this week by following this link.

This is going to be an epic week for the store that many of us will remember for years to come. Of course, you are encouraged to cosplay during the big events this week. Your picture might end up on this site. See you at Wonderworld Comics this week!

Which Michael Myers is in Halloween: Nightdance?

Earlier this year, I discussed Halloween: Nightdance and declared it as one of the Gems of the Warehouse. This week, Tyler Mane (who played Michael Myers in Rob Zombie’s Halloween and Halloween II) will be at the store as will Josh Blalock, the publisher of Halloween: Nightdance. Some people asked me recently about Halloween: Nightdance and about which “version” of Michael Myers is uses to tell its horrific story.

See my original review of Halloween: Nightdance by following this link.

Halloween: Nightdance is a Gem of the Warehouse

Halloween: Nightdance is a Gem of the Warehouse

The Versions of Michael Myers

Essentially, there are two versions of the character which have played out in movies over the years. There is the one which portrays an insane human and the one which is more of a paranormal and superhuman monster. The first two movies in the original Halloween series used the insane human version of Michael Myers while the later movies made him more of a monster which could withstand being blown up, burning, and being shot in the head. Rob Zombie’s version made him moe human than superhuman.

Halloween: Nightdance and Michael Myers

In my initial review, I spoke about how the story in Halloween: Nightdance harkened back to the original telling of the Michael Myers story. This holds true in that the portrayal of the character is more of an insane human than a superhuman behind a mask. Since the Rob Zombie version of the character uses the same methodology, you could say that the Michael Myers in Halloween: Nightdance uses the same type as the original movies or of the Rob Zombie remakes. While Micheal Myers’ body handles a ton of punishment in Halloween: Nightdance, it does not handle anything which could not be endured by a person under the influence of insanity.

Compound Fracture and the Fears it Exploits

Since Tyler Mane is coming to out Detroit area comic book store tomorrow, I wanted to take a moment to talk about Compound Fracture and the fears which the movie will touch upon. It looks like an interesting movie based on a concept which fits into the classic horror market.

Compound Fracture

Compound Fracture

The Basis of Compound Fracture

Tyler Mane will star as Michael Wolffsen in the 2013 movie Compound Fracture. The character takes his family to visit his estranged and eccentric father (played by Muse Watson) who is building an unassailable compound to calm his on-setting dementia. As the film progresses, the stars will learn of a ghost named William (played by Derek Mears) which haunts the compound as carnage of the characters begins. Escaping the compound will become as much of a menace as the spirit. To find out more about Compound Fracture, please follow this link to the movie’s official website.

You can learn more about Compound Fracture by following this link.

Fitting into Horror Market

Well before I began writing articles and other types of posts about comics, I wrote about the history and symbolism of the horror genre. Compound Fracture fits right in with particular classic trends in the horror genre which I have spent many years studying. By understanding the classic styles, and the fears horror films touch upon, you can have a greater understanding of a horror film.

First off, the sins of the father/ancestors haunting the son/descendants is a horror storytelling tool made popular in gothic storytelling. Dunsany, Poe, Lovecraft, and Bierce all used this type of story to progress old superstitions and religious fears that our precursors might have cursed us with their evil deeds. One classic story using this storytelling tool would be The Case of Charles Dexter Ward by H.P. Lovecraft which was made into the Roger Corman movie entitled The Haunted Palace starring Vincent Price. I am interested to see how it plays out in Compound Fracture.

The Father’s compound in Compound Fracture touches upon the fears of separatism and meeting up with separatists and their particular brands of insanity. Classic horror movies such as Psycho, Deliverance, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre touched upon these types of fears. More modern movies such as House of 1000 Corpses and the Hatchet movie series also delve into these classic fears.

Insanity is also a major part of the Compound Fracture story. Another gothic storytelling tool touches upon what we might do if we were to lose control or what others might do if they were to lose control. A large majority of the works of Poe teach us lessons about how we should keep ourselves from going over the edge. It will be fun to see the lessons discussed and inferred in Compound Fracture.

Ghosts and the paranormal continue to be hot right now, but ghost stories were among the first horrific stories created hundreds (if not thousands) of years ago to scare children into bed or to keep the average peasant in line and away from certain buildings or plots of land. In the modern day, movies such as those in the Paranormal Activity line and all of the paranormal investigation shows on TV help to keep ghosts as current and important in modern horror and as a base for movies like Compound Fracture.

The Essence and the Goal of Horror

The essence of horror is taking a collective fear held by many (if not all) people and exploiting it. The goal is to bring the fear out into the open and address it in the community format of entertainment so that we can have a release which might help us to overcome out fears as a society. Sometimes, those fears use fantastic and fanciful tools such as zombies and constructs (like Frankenstein’s monster) to take our exploration of fear to an extreme that the mind will realize is fictitious. At other times, real fears such as separatism, insanity, and death will be used to trick the mind because separatism, insanity, and death (as in the Compound Fracture movie) are aspects of the world we live in.

What To Do With Those Scrap Comics – Don’t Toss Them

A comic book collector asked me the other day about what he should do with scrap comics in his collection. He wondered if it was worth keeping them, or if he should simply toss them out. I suggested other options to tossing them.

Scrap comics

Scrap comics

Use Scrap Comics for Crafts

If you have young children around to give you scrap comics to, you have done something better than simply tossing the scrap comics out. I remember doing different crafts with scrap comics when I was a kid. Of course, if you do not have children to give them to, or children in the neighborhood or your family to give them to, consider donating them to a school district. They can put the scrap comics to good use through a school project.

Donate to a Military Group

Some military groups will be happy to send your unwanted comics to our service men and women overseas. A friend of mine served in Afghanistan and he talks about the scrap comics someone sent over to his platoon. The comics were a simple distraction from the fighting and he told me that reading them invigorated him because he was able to return to his childhood for about twenty minutes a day.

If you have scrap comics laying around the house, think about interesting ways to use them. Don’t simply toss them as someone else might gain enjoyment from them.

Marvel Needs Joss Whedon to Stay Relevant

Have you noticed how often Joss Whedon is in the spotlight these days? Do you notice that entertainment sites and entertainment shows have been revolving so many of their reports around him, or at least quoting him whenever possible? There is a reason for that.

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon

Robert Downey Jr. Rumors

Most of the news sources which were running the now-over Robert Downey Jr. rumors were quoting Joss Whedon. They would ask the director/producer about how the actor might not come back or about how he might be asking for more money for his costars or about how he might have tension with this star or that. Great pains were taken to keep Joss Whedon relevant.

Much Ado About Something

Did you know that Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing debuts this weekend? The movie has been done for well over a year, but is just hitting theaters now. Why would they want to have the movie hit this weekend in theaters? Could it be to take a small bite out of Man of Steel and get entertainment shows, reporters, and bloggers talking about Joss Whedon when they would have been talking about Man of Steel? If you have been following Much Ado About Nothing, you already know that Clark Gregg plays an important role in the movie. This leads to my next point.

Agents of Marvel

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. begins to air within a matter of months. Marvel is banking everything on the show because it could cause the company to have a strong foothold in primetime. By keeping Joss Whedon in the limelight, Marvel can manipulate them into mentioning the upcoming show. With Clark Gregg being in Much Ado About Nothing, the entertainment company gains another chance at a push in the media.

Joss Whedon – Superstar! (To the tune of Jesus Christ Superstar)

When we talk about the Marvel movies, our minds automatically point out the superstars involved. Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson were major stars before the Phase 1 movies, but Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evens, Chris Hemsworth, Clark Gregg, and Jeremy Renner have all become bigger stars as well. Marvel needs as many huge names attached to the project and by lifting Joss Whedon to a higher level, they gain another star on the Avengers project and on S.H.I.E.L.D. They need him to stay “in the papers” to continue to have his star shine brighter.

Don’t Believe the Robert Downey Jr. Rumor Hype

I am sure that you know by now that the geek world is ecstatic with the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. would be back as Iron Man for Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. There were rumors about people wanting to back out of the project if Robert Downey Jr. was not involved, disputes over pay, and whispers about cast members who did not get along. I have a strong feeling that the hype was planned.

Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3

The Timing of the Hype

Note that all of the rumors about Robert Downey Jr. and his future as Iron man happened in the space between the release of Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel. This took some of the attention away from the new DC Comics movie and placed it on Marvel. In business, it is a smart move to get people talking about your product during times when they should be talking about your competitor’s. Corporations have planners who try to decide when the best time is to steal thunder from competitors.

The Timing of the Announcement

Also take note about the timing of the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. is back online for Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. It was just days after Man of Steel raked money in at the box office and as the movie was prepping to make another strong weekend run. Yet another time for Marvel to steel thunder from DC Comics.

Controversy Adds Character

Now that we have some controversy surrounding Robert Downey Jr., he gains a little more character away from his character. You might see him as someone who is fighting for the other actors in the Marvel franchises. You might see him as someone who can put aside differences for a project (or for money). You might see him as someone who everyone wants to work with. Either way, he gains more distinction in the role than just being the person who is in the roll. Don’t believe the spoon-fed hype.

Popping over Locke & Key Movie Announcement

I am excited by the thought of Universal bringing Locke & Key to the big screen. Dread Central has given some of the details, and they have me popping.

Locke & Key

Locke & Key

The Long Road

Those of us who have followed the Locke and Key story are happy to see the quest towards a media adaptation finally come to fruition. After a failed TV pilot, and multiple studios looking at the project, Universal is finally moving forward.

Ted Adams Producing

I love the idea of Ted Adams (CEO and Lead Publisher for IDW Publishing) being one of the producers on the film. Too many studios don’t want creators or anyone associated with the publication of a work having anything to do with a movie adaptation. This disdain is how we get Brad Pitt starring in World War Z which is a movie which uses only the name of a great zombie story. I am sure Ted Adams will make sure the movie version of Locke & Key has something for the fans which have made the storyline a success.

Anything Lovecraft

As a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft and his contemporaries, I am always excited when I hear about a project either involving his work, or influenced by his work. Well, as long as former cast members of 90210 are not involved. Locke & Key might “open the door” for more Lovecraftian movies in the future. We can only hope.

Horror Comics

One of the larger portions of my comic book collection is my horror comics collection. Anything project which could bring more attention to horror comics gets me popping again. Horror comics are often overlooked for superhero comics, but the creators of horror in comics have done much and they should not be ignored. Locke & Key might even turn new creators on and make them consider using comics to tell their stories or as a medium for their twisted art.

Thoughts on Age of Ultron #10

I am going to assume that you have either read Age of Ultron #10, or have heard all of the spoilers out there. Since it has been 24 hours since the comic has come out, I guess it is time for me to talk about where Marvel can go NOW with the revelation of the space time continuum being borked by the characters in the story.

Age of Ultron #10

Age of Ultron #10

Interesting Note

We should start out by pointing out how Age of Ultron #10 gives us a moment when we realize that all of the universes in the Marvel Megaverse are crossing. We have Earth 616’s Galactus apparently in the Ultimate Universe, we have Angela zooming around the galaxy, and we have characters having visions of other characters from throughout the megaverse. This grand-scale crossover means almost anything can happen over the next few months.

Another Interesting Note

At least Marvel had the gumption to realize that the story it created in Age of Ultron should have negative ramifications other than simply changing a few characters here and there. Not only will the characters have to deal with all the changes, they are going to have to figure out how to fix the problem so that it does not happen again.

Yet One More Interesting Note on Age of Ultron #10

Can anyone think of a major crossover which potentially dealt with every universe in the Marvel Megaverse at the same time?

Dead No More?

One aspect I would love to see is for characters to reappear who have been presumed dead for a long time. While I am not expecting Uncle Ben (as bringing him back is a sacrilege), there are many other characters who have died over the years who could be brought back. Abomination, Baron Mordo, Baron Zemo, Cheetah, Maggot, Nightcrawler, Professor X, Peter Parker, and Wraith are just a handful of characters I would love to see brought back to life now that time and space are so screwed up after Age of Ultron #10.

The Grand Swap

We have seen Galactus head over to the Ultimate Universe so what is to say that there will not be more swaps in the near future? How about sending Zombie Hulk or Zombie Spider-man into the normal universe? Age of Ultron #10 opens the door for almost any character from another universe to be sent into any other. Marvel can play this one up very will with a swap month which could send the megaverse on its ear.

Send Someone Somewhere?

After Age of Ultron #10, Marvel could take a character with mediocre sales and send them to another time or place. The story could follow the character (or even a small team of characters) as they try to figure out a way home from the strange world they are now part of.

Please Don’t

Please Marvel, don’t simply allow the Scarlet Witch or Doctor Strange to will reality back to normal. This is too easy of a trick that most of us would not be happy seeing. Age of Ultron #10 should be harder to overcome than with a simple wish.

New Green Lantern Replica Rings Do Not Measure Up

I was excited when I found out that DC Comics was going to reissue the plastic Green Lantern replica rings because these are good sellers in the store and many fans have tried to collect each color for their shelves are mantles. When we opened the packages of the reissued Green Lantern replica rings, we noticed that something was very wrong. These are not reissues. These rings are different.

Green Lantern replica rings

Green Lantern replica rings

What is a Reissue?

Typically, when you are talking about a product being reissued, you are talking about a product which is going back into production using the same molds and dyes. Sometimes, the packaging is slightly different (such as when a second print run happens in a comics), but that should be the only difference.

The Differences in the Green Lantern Replica Rings

In the picture, I placed one of the new Green Lantern replica rings next to an old one. The one on the left is darker and has a glossy finish. This makes the ring appear to be some type of metallic alloy instead of simply plastic unless you are very close to it. Because of the crisp appearance, it is a bargain at the low price point they are sold at.

The one on the right is the new Green Lantern replica ring. Notice that it is a light color of green and has a matte finish. You can tell right away that this is a plastic piece of costume jewelry from across the room.

This is Not a Reissue

The new Green Lantern replica rings are not a reissue of the popular collectible many stores have sold out of. It is a cheap knockoff of the original and should not be passed off by DC Comics as anything but. This is the sad second place replacement for those Green Lantern fans who were not quick enough to pick up the original.

Hey ComiXology – Do You Really Want This Fight? (Updated)

I received a personal email from ComiXology today because obviously the company does not have any clue who its enemies are. I don’t even know how they received my email address because I have never signed up for their service or given anyone there my personal email address. For some reason, ComiXology believes I would want to know that they just expanded their catalogue to include French comics from French publishers. As someone with French roots, this does not surprise me since the French give up fights so easily.

The death of the comic book industry will be caused by digitally downloading comic books.

The death of the comic book industry will be caused by digitally downloading comic books.

I sent the following email back to ComiXology:

Please refrain from sending me any updates about your product in the future. I am not interested in purchasing digital comics from Comixology or any other digital company. I am also not interested in suggesting my readers purchase a product which could eventually lead to the elimination of print comic books.

I see ComiXology and other digital comics distributors as a hurdle in the comic book industry which must be overcome. Even though you have the support of many comic book publishers, you do not have my support. I hope Marvel, DC Comics, and other publishers wake up to the fact that digital comics will bring down the comic book industry through the elimination of the mom and pop comic shops across the country (and the world). It is on the backs of those owners that all companies have sold their products and gained the followings they have today. The progression of digital comics through ComiXology and similar companies is not a stride into the future but a stab in the collective back of the supply chain which has made said companies billions.

Please take me off any email listing you have as any further mass emailings from your company will result in negative feedback on my part. Know that I will continue my fight against ComiXology and any other digital distributorship who would try to take money out of the pockets of those who helped to make comics what they are today. I will also continue my plight to force the publishers to wake up before they have collapsed the industry for a third time.

Update

After my initial email back to ComiXology, I received a reply that I would be taken off the mailing list. In the same email, though, the high-ranking representative of ComiXology attempted to win me over the to digital medium.  He tried to pint out how print comics are up to their best numbers in a long time and that this is the first time we have seen a transition to digital in which the traditional medium was up. This was my second reply:

As the Web Content Director for WonderWorldComics.com, as someone who followed the comic book industry for multiple years for Yahoo!, and as someone who has collected comics for over three decades – I know what the statistics are and know that the statistics would me better if digital comics did not exist. The comic book medium is different from the movie and book industry in digital format because more people collect comics than books or movies.

Marvel, DC, Image, IDW, and many of the smaller companies have had a streak of good products in the last few years which have spiked with collectors. They are demanding more from their writers, artists, and editors than ever before and the success has spread from top-tier titles to middle and lower tiers as well. The economy is up, so people are able to purchase more comics than they were a few years ago. The companies have been able to tap into the collector’s market but have been kept in check by retailers who worry about the overproduction of variant covers and a repeat of the market crash in the late 1990s. There are many factors that go into why print comics are up, and there is one reason why print comics are not up even more.

What is interesting is that it is not illegal downloaders who will but the biggest dent in the digital comics market. It is people like me who are willing to point out the reason for digital comics. It is (the creation and sale of digital comics) not to move into the future. It is people like me who point out how Marvel and DC would love to have digital comics take off so that they could eliminate Diamond and all of those pesky comic book stores. Marvel and DC could increase their bottom lines without having to pay out for a supply chain.

Sure, the comic book companies are charging less for most digital comics than for print comics, but how long is that going to last? Do you remember when you could buy the latest album on iTunes for $4.99 as an incentive to go digital? Now, it would be a miracle to find a five-year-old album for under $7. If digital comics ever eliminate the supply chain, fans should expect to pay out the ears for their digital comics.

Be leery, though, of the hands that feed you today. What happens when Marvel and DC Comics come to the realization that they can sell digital comics on their own? Do you think they will think twice about stabbing ComiXology in the back when they are trying to stab companies they have partnered with for decades?

Age of Ultron #10 is My Pick of the Week!

Age of Ultron #10 comes out today and it easily became my Pick of the Week. Simply put, you need to read this issue. Even if you have not read Age of Ultron up to this point, there are a series of events in Age of Ultron #10 which will have you amazed. If you are thinking that the introduction of Angela is the watershed moment in the issue, you are only partially correct.

Age of Ultron #10

Age of Ultron #10

Spoilers for Age of Ultron #10?

As per usual, I will do everything I can to avoid giving spoilers in this article. If you are looking for spoilers, you have come to the wrong website. Age of Ultron #10 is so strong that a spoiler will ruin the moments of shock and awe you will experience while reading the issue. I would not be able to sleep at night if I robbed you of that experience.

Talk About Universe-Changing Events?

Marvel has spoken about universe-changing events for many years now. Every year, they come out with a crossover event or two which they say will change everything we think about the Marvel Universe and how their new event will change everything. Compared to the universe-changing moments in Age of Ultron #10, all of Marvel’s former crossover events are like comparing a Little League game to the World Series. This is Marvel’s New 52 event!

Don’t Get Me Wrong

Age of Ultron #10 does not reboot the Marvel Universe like the New 52 did for DC Comics. Instead, we have a new evolution like Marvel has been working on since Marvel NOW was launched. Age of Ultron #10 has moments we are going to be talking about for years and debating about as well. Marvel has just opened up Pandora’s Box and every “What If?” scenario we have thought about could become a reality. Hopefully, Marvel can turn this universe-changing event into something epic.

Why You Should Attend Tyler Mane’s Appearance at Wonderworld Comics

As you probably know by now, Tyler Mane of Compound Fracture, Rob Zombie’s Halloween series, and X-Men, will be appearing at our Detroit area comic book store on Tuesday, June 25. There are many reasons why you should plan on stopping in.

Tyler Mane will be at Wonderworld Comics on June 25, 2013!

Tyler Mane will be at Wonderworld Comics on June 25, 2013!

Not as Crowded as a Convention

Since there will not be as many people in Wonderworld Comics as would be at a convention, you should expect to have at least an extra moment or two with Tyler Mane. We have all been to conventions where the lines are so long that we can only spend a few moments with our favored stars. With the store appearance, you will not have to flash by his table in a matter of seconds before being ushered along. This type of opportunity with a star does not happen often.

Learn About a Movie Before Others Do

With Tyler Mane stopping by the store, you have the opportunity to learn about Compound Fracture before the mainstream viewers do. You can be that gal or guy who knows intimate details about the movie others might not because you were able to hear a star of the film talking about it.

It Supports a Good Cause

Scares that Care is a non-profit which helps sick children and women with breast cancer. You can rest well on Tuesday night knowing that you helped make a sick child’s life a little more manageable. You can rest easy knowing that there is a woman out there who is getting the support she needs to fight her battle with breast cancer.

The Cosplay

Yes, there will be cosplay at this event. While cosplay is not a requirement, you are encouraged (if you want to) to dress up as one of your favorite characters from one of Tyler Mane’s movies. Who will you be?

You Know Interesting Things Happen

Those of you who have been at Wonderworld Comics during one of our events know that they are a ton of fun. Tyler Mane’s promotion of Compound Fracture in support of Scares that Care will not be an exception to our rule that everyone who attends should have as much fun as legally possible. Stop by, have some fun, and go home happy knowing that you did something good for someone.

Please take a moment to RSVP to the event through Facebook.

Should Comic Book Creators Advise on Comic Book Movies?

Should comic book creators be advisors on comic book movies? This is a question I was asked many years ago and I find that I have a different answer to this question than I once did. After reading both sides of this argument, you might have a definitive answer as well.

MAN-OF-STEEL-man-of-steel-32497930-1330-870What I Once Answered

A handful of years ago, I was asked to write about comic book creators taking an advisory role in movies about their characters. At the time, I felt that a creator would be too attached to the version he or she worked on to be able to move forward enough for a movie. I remember stating that a comic book movie needs to change a character so it will meld with the current times and the current market. Small changes would have to be made and this would alienate creators and some fans along the way. I argued that the studio had every right to do this in an attempt to make a comic book movie as mainstream as possible.

Today

After hearing what I heard about the Superman movie, Man of Steel, and reading Mark Waid’s blog post about his impressions of the movie, I thoroughly believe comic book creators should advise movie studios on comic book movies. You see, movie studios do not have a direct connection to the characters they are showing on the screen. Even if the movie is done by Warner Bros., the big wigs at the top are only looking at the botton line and not the actual characters involved. Maybe if someone like Mark had been in an advisory position, Man of Steel might not have veered so much from the traditional understandings of the character.

Someone needs to keep filmmakers grounded in their “representations” of comic book characters. The creators might have the chance of keeping new films away from being like World War Z which promises to only share a name with the book. When I go see a movie, I expect to see a representation of what the director sees in the story, but I do not expect to see the remnants of the abortion of the original story.

I Vow to Never See Man of Steel

I have spoken to many people over the weekend about Man of Steel and have found that I have to add the movie to the list of movies I refuse to see. It is not because I don’t especially care for Superman. It is because there are aspects of the movie which I do not wish to condone.

Man of Steel

Man of Steel

My Refusing to See Certain Movies

There is a short list of movies which I refuse to ever see. They are on the list for various reasons. Days of Thunder is on the list because I hate NASCAR and just about anything to do with racing. Dead Man Walking makes the list because I despise Susan Sarandon and her inability to keep her politics to herself. The same goes for any movie by Sean Penn. I have never seen Top Gun, and never will simply for the fact that there are so many people that say I “have” to see the movie. The last one is simply a personal goal.

Trying to Make this Spoiler-Free

I am going to do everything I can to keep this article spoiler-free, but there are a few aspects which I have to allude to so you understand why I refuse to see Man of Steel.

Superman Not in Man of Steel

If I was going to see Man of Steel, I would be going under the assumption that it was a Superman movie. The main character would be the suit-wearing character which everyone grew up with. Even if DC Comics had decided to insert more of the New 52 aspects of the character, I would at least be going to see a Superman movie. Instead, from everything I have heard and read about the movie, there is a character in a red suit that does not exhibit the characteristics one should have expected to see in Man of Steel.

Not Superman You Say?

Even though Superman has never been one of my personal favorites, I have to commend the creators who have worked on him over the years for establishing that Superman will do everything he can to keep human life sacred. This aspect of his character in Man of Steel is outshone by a character who will do anything to get to his target, including fighting in the middle of a city.

Displacement vs. Destruction

Another aspect which I hear is lacking in Man of Steel is Superman’s famous act of displacement. Instead of destroying an alien ship, the Superman everyone grew up with would cast the alien spacecraft out into oblivion and far from the Earth. How many times did we see Superman kick unbeatable foes off into space instead of rendering them in half?

The Moment

There is a moment in which Superman takes the opportunity to do irreparable damage to another character’s body. This is not something Superman would do. He would find a non-lethal way of dealing with the foe. He would do everything he could to end the issue without ending the person causing the issue. Making a non-lethal decision is something which makes Superman into a super man. This is not present in Man of Steel. Since the movie is about a character we have never seen before under the guise of one we are familiar with, I find I cannot willingly give DC Comics a dime of my money in support of the movie.

While it had a great opening weekend, I hope Man of Steel crashes and burns from here on out.

Always Keep Lids on Your Comic Book Storage Boxes

Someone asked me the other day if lids were actually necessary for comic book storage boxes. There are many reasons why you should always have a lid on your comic book storage boxes.

Comic Book Storage

Comic Book Storage

Keep Everything Out

First off, lids on comic book storage boxes help to keep everything out. This includes insects, and dust. Over time, these can do damage to the bags you store your comics in.

Keep Everything In

No matter how careful we are when we are moving comic book storage boxes, we can sometimes tip boxes. While the lids are not tight to the boxes, they will at least give some support in keeping the items inside from slipping out.

Stacking

If you are going to stack your comic book storage boxes, they need to have lids. The lids help to spread out the weight of upper boxes. This will help the boxes on the bottom to last longer. The longer a bottom box lasts, the less chance there is for collapse and the loss of a collection.

The X-Files: Season 10 – I’m Popping Over Here!

I am looking forward to the launch of The X-Files: Season 10 which will hit shelves in a matter of days. As a die-hard fan of the show, I am looking forward to seeing what IDW Publishing does with the property and what direction the project goes in.

The X-Files: Season 10

The X-Files: Season 10

Hasn’t This Been Done Before?

Yes, there have been X-Files comics before, but there is a unique aspect of The X-Files: Season 10 which should be touched upon. In the past, comics based on The X-Files have either covered the “monster-of-the-week” style storylines or have hinted to the greater government conspiracies. They were not part of the true canon of the show, so creators of the comics had to stay clear of adding anything to the government conspiracy storylines.

IDW Publishing’s Difference with The X-Files: Season 10

Since The X-Files: Season 10 is not competing with a show on TV, or an impeding movie, canon can be explored, altered, revised, or added. Note, issue #3 has an appearance by the Cigarette Smoking Man. Isn’t he dead? If IDW Publishing is going to bring back CSM, what else might they have in store as the issues progress?

Chris Carter’s Involvement

In IDW Publishing’s initial release about The X-Files: Season 10, note how it states that, “The entire project will be executive produced by THE X-FILES creator Chris Carter, who is returning in an active role to help steer his characters back to the forefront of popular culture once again.” This means that many of the ideas will be coming from the mind of the creator of the show so fans can accept the changes as canon. This is key for the story as die-hard fans like myself will not want to miss the comic which will progress the story in an official capacity.

Even though the release of The X-Files: Season 10 is still days away, I have already added it to my pull list. Have you?

King Kon is Just in Time for Father’s Day

King Kon is only a few days away and it is fitting how this quarter’s show falls on Father’s Day weekend. Saturday will be a fitting day to visit King Kon.

As a Father

Silver Age comics

Silver Age comics

As a father, I love when my daughter finds enjoyment in something I like. Sometimes that comes in the form of looking in my rearview mirror while driving and seeing that she is singing along to a song I have enjoyed for twenty years or more. Other times, I might get a warm feeling when I am reading her a story I grew up with. One special bond we share, though, is a love of superheroes. Shows like King Kon can give a father and child the opportunity to share their love of a particular character or superhero series without dealing with the hustle and bustle of a major convention.

Sharing the Memories

Some of my favorite moments in our Detroit area comic book store come when I see a father pointing out toys in the store he grew up with. Kids are often amazed how their parents played with the “old” toys we have on our shelves. The youngest generation wonders how we managed to get enjoyment out of these little action figures or vehicles which did not have automatic parts or controllers. They must think we lived in a simpler time (well, we did…but that is another article). I am looking forward to seeing those moments this weekend at King Kon.

What Might You Find?

You might be surprised by some of the items you find. Maybe you can find that old board game you and your father used to play with years ago. Maybe you will find a copy of a comic your dad picked up for you during a quick run for milk. You might find a toy you used to play with as he read the paper. You might even find a gift for Father’s Day at King Kon for the old man or even for yourself.

Man of Steel Needs to Carry All the Weight of Failures and Botches by DC

Interesting article over on Yahoo! today about how Man of Steel holds the key to the future of DC Comics movie franchises. I have to agree with the point of the article about how we should expect more superhero movies out of DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. if the new Superman movie does well. There are a few points that the article did not touch upon which should be mentioned.

MAN-OF-STEEL-man-of-steel-32497930-1330-870

Man of Steel Must Carry All Weight

We have talked about Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark project with Constantine and other members of the group, but even that might not come to fruition if Man of Steel falters. The project is the closest one to a definite on the Warner Bros. docket outside of a sequel to Man of Steel. The studio can talk all it wants about movies about the Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman, and anyone else all they want. If the Man of Steel does not shatter the box office this weekend, the execs at Marvel are going to laugh themselves to sleep.

A History of Planning

We all know about how many years DC Comics, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. have dragged their feet when it came to creating a Justice League movie or exploiting other potential movie properties other than Superman and Batman. We all know how they have planned this movie and that movie just enough to get fans to roll their eyes whenever an “announcement” comes about another movie franchise. Is it fair to rest all of this past planning on one movie? It should rest on the shoulders of the planners who could not exit the board room without a deal.

A History of Failures

The last Superman movie was horrible. Green Lantern was not much better. The “I-lift-things-up-and-put-them-down-on-my-knee” version of Bane in the last Batman movie was a disaster. If we take a look back over the past franchises, DC Entertainment has a strong history of not being able to make more than two good movies in a row. Superman 3 – whatever were all fluff as where any Batman movie which had a number higher than two attached with it. Can Man of Steel erase all of those failures and the history of discouragement?

My Hope

I have made it clear on this site and in our Detroit area comic shop that I am not a fan of Superman. I do hope, though, that Man of Steel is a resounding success. I hope that it redeems DC Comics, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. in the minds of comic book fans and of the general public. I want to see great movies in the future from DC, and if I have to push strong in support of a Superman movie in Man of Steel to get a Justice League, Justice League Dark, Wonder Woman and other movies…I will.

Superman Day at Wonderworld Comics

Everyone who stopped into Wonderworld Comics today for Superman Day was apparently happy they came. It was a blast today with cake, costumes, cute kids, comics, captivating discussions, complimentive customer service, commissioned art by comic creators, and Jay Towers. Below, you will find many of the pictures taken during the event.

Less of Age of Ultron #10 Coming Than Ordered

Our Detroit comic shop has been notified that we will not be receiving as many Age of Ultron #10 issues as we initially ordered. Diamond has reduced our order of Age of Ultron #10 by 13 percent. Luckily, our orders for variants have not been impacted.

Age of Ultron #10

Age of Ultron #10

Why is this Happening?

Chances are good that there were more orders for Age of Ultron #10 than Marvel was expecting. While I have not heard conformation, I would believe that other store’s orders will be impacted by this allocation as well.

Importance of Age of Ultron #10

If you have forgotten, or if you have not been following the Age of Ultron story, Age of Ultron #10 wraps up the story which has been building for a few months and will introduce Angela (from Spawn) to the Marvel Universe. We have already been told that she will become a major player in the universe, so there are many collectors which will want to get their hands on the issue. Marvel is trying to keep the story so secret that they have taken the step of polybagging each issue to keep the readers in suspense to the last possible moment.

What does this Mean for Me?

Well, if you are planning on getting Age of Ultron #10, you had better make sure you come to our Detroit area comic shop as early as you can. Apparently, supply is not on par with the demand so there is a good chance this crucial issue in the Marvel NOW continuity is going to go fast. It might mean that those who wait will not have the opportunity to have a first printing of the comic they have been waiting for throughout the first nine issues I the series. Age of Ultron #10 poses to be one of the most critical issues published by Marvel this year. Will you be able to pick one up?

Importance of the Shel Dorf Awards

The 2013 Shel Dorf Award Nominations are now open. The Shel Dorf Awards are special to me and I want to share a little bit about them with you. You can nominate your favorites by following this link, but I encourage you to read about the importance of the awards first.

Nominations for the 2013 Shel Dorf Awards now being accepted!

Nominations for the 2013 Shel Dorf Awards now being accepted!

The Difference of the Shel Dorf Awards

Most award nomination processes are run by guys with suits who nominate based on sales, potential future deals, or on perceived popularity. This is true from the Oscars down to many of the “industry awards” granted in various industries. Not so with the Shel Dorf Awards. The nominations and eventual votes are completely determined by the fans.

The Importance of the Shel Dorf Awards

Since the nominations and votes for the Shel Dorf Awards are cast by fans, the creators involved are given an extra confidence push they might not receive from other awards. They know that it was the fans that got them where they are, and not just some dealmakers in a smoke-filled room. Creators realize the fans like what they are doing and that the fans are pledging to continue to support them in the future.

I Remember…

I remember being at the first Shel Dorf Awards at the first Detroit Fanfare in 2010. There was talk at the ceremony about there being a revolution coming where Detroit Fanfare and the fans of the convention would take back comic book conventions. This movement would grow and that the industry would have to realize that we (the fans) wanted comic book conventions that were about comic books, comic book creators, and comic book fans and not about forgotten sitcom stars, wrestlers, and porn stars. I remember becoming invigorated and determined to pay close attention to the progression of this movement and to the growth of Detroit Fanfare.

The Movement of the Shel Dorf Awards

The following year, all of the Shel Dorf Award nominees were determined by the fans. We were not given a long list of people to choose from which were determined by someone. We were given the opportunity to choose who we wanted to win a Shel Dorf Award and who should be given the “fan’s recognition.” So too was the process in 2012 and so too is the process for the 2013 Shel Dorf Awards.

Symbolism of the Shel Dorf Awards

Note, the awards are named after Shel Dorf who was the founder of the Detroit Triple FanFair. He realized that it was time for someone to create a show for the fans where we could come and hang out with other people like ourselves and have the chance to meet some of the creators who gave us joy through our favored form of media. He gave the fans what they wanted and it is through his legacy that we show who we believe deserves recognition at the Shel Dorf Awards.

Particular Connection

I was honored to be nominated for the Comic Book Blogger of the Year award at the 2012 Shel Dorf Awards due to my work in following the industry for Yahoo!. That nomination (even though I did not win) is one of the highlights of my writing career. Hopefully, that opportunity will come again sometime in the future (hint hint hint).

The Shel Dorf Awards is not a stuffy ceremony with awards decided upon by a select few. It is determined by you, and me, and anyone else who decides to vote. This is our comic book awards and we should take every opportunity we can to promote it and to encourage our friends to have their voices heard as well.

Batman #21 Zero Year is My Pick of the Week

Batman #21 Zero Year is such a strong offering that it had to be my Pick of the Week. Any casual fan of Batman in the New 52 or of classic Batman should pick this title up.

Batman #21 Zero Year is my Pick of the Week!

Batman #21 Zero Year is my Pick of the Week!

The Psychology of Bruce Wayne/Batman

Batman #21 gives a look into the mind of Bruce Wayne in the days between when he decided to fight crime and when he actually becomes Batman in the New 52 continuity. While the story does not have much action, it sets the stage as to why Bruce Wayne has decided to prevent crime in Gotham City and why he hunts down those who commit crimes. This is an important story in the Batman lineage from any continuity.

The Psychology of Alfred

Without telling too much, if you read the story closely, you will note that Batman #21 Zero Year is also an exploration into the story of Alfred. While it might not tell his background, the astute reader will pick up signs about the relationship between the most famous butler in comics and the man he serves. Alfred is often taken for granted and the character was given moments to shine with great dialogue.

A Villain Comes to Light

A particular classic villain is shown in the last few pages of Batman #21 Zero Year which has not been explored very much in the New 52. I will not say who it is, but it will be interesting to see how his near future plays out. We know that he is [Deleted Spolier] during [Deleted Spoiler], so I am looking forward to see how the character got to that point.

Of course, this month is dedicated to Superman. That does not mean that the creators behind Batman should take a step back and coast through the month. Batman #21 Zero Year proves they did not rest on their laurels for another time to grab the spotlight.
